RegnR8's Absolute Rule of the Monarchs
Tournament Report for May 5, 2005

Hi all,

Welcome to this weeks edition of the tournament report!

Last weeks Tournament Report generated the most response and email I have ever had. Even though I accidentally put the wrong email address on one of them, I still received DOZENS of emails! Thanks! I am glad there are folks who actually read these things.

Last week's rant was fun, and this week I have another. Well, I'm going to start off with the rant instead of waiting until the end of this report.

For the last several months, I have been writing these reports and happily putting my deck up for all to see. Now, I will be the first to admit I have borrowed ideas from many decks posted on many sites, yet I have never copied an entire deck and then claimed it as my own creation. This has happened to me and this deck several times and most recently within the past couple of days. I have seen my own deck posted on at least three different sites. The last one even listed the Skull Servant, a dead give away that it was a copy and paste job. This is saddens me, because I have been working on this deck since October of last year. It is an ever changing project and every week it's a little different. It has been very successful but not unbeatable, as the tournament reports testify. People, please, please, please don;t make me stop including the deck list in my reports.

So, that's it for that rant. Now, onto another. This week was infuriating because once again, I was beaten by the "race to see who gets the broken cards first" routine and BLS was the deciding factor in many, many duels. Ok sure, sure there's the "Oh, there's so many ways to get rid of BLS" arguement but, if you don't have the cards in your hand or set, FAT lot of good they are going to do you. You have, at BEST, two turns to pull that Snatch Steal or Smashing Ground you need because if you don't, you are going to lose.

Pot, Delinquent Duo, Graceful and Magician of Faith. This has become nearly the most broken opening hand EVER in Yugioh. If your opponent gets a chance to flip that MoF his next turn and you have nothing to stop it, you're doomed. This should not be.

Hopefully, Konami will come to their senses and have a BALANCED ban list for once. I hate to say it but, the current meta game is boring, dull, predictable and downright lacking in creativity, challenge and most importantly, FUN. Isn't a game suppose to be fun? Where's the fun in playing Heavy Storm, Pot, Graceful, dump a light and a dark, Delinquent Duo, summon BLS and win in two turns?
Where's the challenge in pulling that Lightning Vortex when all you have is a Sinister Serpent and your opponent is kicking your butt with a well constructed deck? This game is more about luck now than skill. I would love to build some other type of deck but I can't because it will not win. Each time I drew Delinquent Duo, I felt actually felt BAD activating it.

Why am I still playing? I ask myself that, too. I think it's because I enjoy the people I play with and friends I have made. It gets me out of the house and out of trouble, too. Haha. I still have to tell myself it's only a game, and to not get so upset when I lose to the same thing everytime.

Regionals is coming up this weekend and I am being forced to put cards in my deck that I would rather do without. Even the Dark Side is calling to me, quietly suggesting that BLS can work in this deck, if I change it up just a little bit. Isn't it sad that a card is SO overpowered, if you do not use it, you're automatically at a disadvantage.

In preparation for Regionals, I did change the deck quite a bit this week. The Gorilla dropped down from three to one. I thought this may really hurt me but, it really had no bearing on the deck's performance at all. I was surprised. I did drop the Skull Servant in favor of a second Magician of Faith but, I hope I have enough nerve to main deck the Skull Servant in lieu of a Spirit Reaper for Regionals. Wouldn't it be hysterical if a Top 8 deck had a Skull Servant in it? Then everyone would use one!! LoL!

Hmmm, drop in a Reflect Bounder for the Gorilla, drop a Spirit Reaper for BLS and viola, I'm a cheap deck, too!!

I went nuts on my traps though and, looking at the deck list, have way too many! Jinzo did actually hurt me a couple of times! The added Dust Tornado was not that big of a help but, the Mirror Force was handy a couple of times.

My daughter hasn't been playing that much because she gets tired of being beaten by the same ol' crap, which is usually the same ol' crap that beats most people. We've been working on her deck for a while and finally decided to drop a couple of things in favor for a couple of other things and well, she decided to enter the tournament today and lo and behold, we get paired up in the very first round! That's SUCKS!!!

ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS DRAGONS

I so want her to win but I can't play conservatively, or go easy on her. Letting her win would be worse than beating her. Her deck can be so brutal at times. A turn two King Dragun, Horus LV8 and Jinzo has happened on more than one occasion and id nearly impossible to get rid of everyting with that combination of monsters on the field at once.

GAME 1
I set a Magician of Faith and Scapegoat on my first turn. She opens up with a Pot of Greed and sets a monster and one S/T card.

I play Heavy Storm, chain my Scapegoat, flip up my Magician of Faith, get my Scapegoat back, tribute MOF for Zaborg and destroy her MoF.

Well, that lasted all of one turn because she Snatch Stole my Zaborg. I draw Mobius and didn't want to do this but had too. I Premature Burialed my MoF, tributed it for Mobius to destroy her Snatch Steal the attacked for 4800. I won next turn.

GAME 2
She gets a King Dragun on me early and I can Morph a token to take it becasue TER targets. A Spirit Reaper stalls for a while. Nimbles gain me some life but, I am at a distinct disadvantage. Finally TiV gets rid of her Dragun but the next turn she Metamorphosis another Fusiler Dragon and has another one on the field! Argh! I Premature Burial my TiV but a Spear Dragon whacks my Reaper again and again and kills me. Trample + Spirit Reaper = Really BAD!

GAME 3
Goodness, she so could have won but made a crucial error late in the game. I was so killing her when she got out LV8 on my and suddenly the game turned and I had nothing but Spells in my hand. She only had 300Lp left, but if I didn't get something to get rid of LV8, I was dead. My Ring and both Bottomless were in the graveyard so, only Torrrential could save me.

I set a Magician of Faith and she summoned TiV and attacked it, then attacked me for 3000 direct! I needed the top deck of the Century and I got it, the lone Gorilla I retained in the deck attacked her TiV for the win. Whew. That was close.

As a footnote, we have dueled since then and we thrash each other about equally so, we're happy with the way the her deck is running now.

ROUND 2
MONARCHS VS CHAOS

Nothing special. Same ol' same ol'.

GAME 1
His opening hand is pretty bad, I suspect because sets a S/T card and ends his turn.

I think I'll nibble at him and summon Sangan. He Rings it, which is perfectly fine with me. I get a Nimble with Sangan's effect. I set Call of the Haunted.

He MST's my Call which I chain to Sangan (got to love that!) and get a Magician of Faith this time. He attacks me with a Blade Knight. Yawn.

I draw Pot and get TiV and a Spirit Reaper. I activate Heavy Storm and he chains Ceasefire to his lone Blade Knight and I know he either has A. nothing in his hand worth setting or B. had something better than Ceasefire in his hand but didn't want to set it.

His Swords Stalls for a little and he Premature Burial's his Blade Knight and attacks so, I Mirror Force it. Now, I know he doesn't have anything in his hand good. A well, timed Mobius gets rid of his Cylinder and I pretty much easliy win this one.

GAME 2
He could have won but held onto BLS and Jinzo for one turn to long. He had two cards in his hand and I Delinquent Duo'd both his Jinzo and BLS when he could have summoned BLS the turn before. Lucky me. He does manage to Snatch my TER but it has a face down monster on it and all I have to do is stall now because he decks himself out while I gain LP from Snatch Steal. On his last turn, he does get rid of TER and special summons a bunch with Call and Premature but it's too little too late and can't kill me.

ROUND 3
MONARCHS VS CHAOS/PHOENIX

GAME 1
He gets the broken hand. Pot, Delinquent, Graceful etc. He kills my hand in the first turn because he got lucky.

GAME 2
Great. I am winning really easily. I have a King Tiger on the field, two cards in my hand and he's top decking with two Scapegoat tokens on the field.

He top decks Pot of Greed, gets Snatch Steal and BLS, then Snatchs my Tiger, special summons BLS and kills me. Again, nothing but luck. I curse the evil Pot of Greed and even more evil BLS. No skill. No strategy. Death to BLS and all his evil minions.

OK so, I'm out in the third round. Pooey.

Alright, we drive to the next tournament which takes forever because traffic is totally horrindous! What normally takes about 40 minutes takes around an hour and a half! Some idiot in a BMW yakking on his cell phone tries to cut in front of me and gets mad when I won't let him. I'm driving in an enormous 15 passenger van and have been sitting in traffic for nearly an hour and this yahoo thinks he can speed up in his shiny car while blabbering on his cell phone in a lane he KNOWS is going to end and then try to cut me off!?! No way Hosea.

ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS A BUNCH OF CRAP

This guy is so funny. He runs about a zillion tributes in his deck, all the way from Blue Eyes to Dark Magician and Buster Blader and wonders why he can't win. He also says thing like, "I activate Harpie's Feather Duster, sweeping away your magic and trap cards!" I'm stil laughing over that one.

GAMES 1 and 2
Whack. Both duels are over in about three turns.

ROUND 2
MONARCHS VS BEASTDOWN/TRAMPLE

Yeah. Something different and challenging.

GAME 1
Oops. Not too challenging after all. Royal Decree shuts him down and Zaborg and Mobius take him out.

GAME 2
Oops. Maybe I was wrong. He side decks and I don't. Enraged Battle Ox and Berserk hammer my set cards and a Panda kills me. Hahaha! I love it!!

GAME 3
I side deck a bunch of stuff. We have a discussion about King Tiger VS Gyku-gire Panda and he wants them to NOT be destroyed and I want them too BE destroyed but in the end, it's didn't matter. I attack him with King Tigers and two Nimbles for the win! GO NIMBLE!!!

ROUND 3
MONARCHS VS TSUKUYOMI CONTROL

At last! A really different deck! Very cool and very nasty.

GAME 1
It took me a minute to figure out what was going on with his deck. He kept returning cards to the top of my deck with Phoenix Wing Wind Blast and reusing Mask of Darkness with Tsyukuomi and it was annoying. I finally get Zaborg out, followed by Mobius and slowly eek out the win.

GAME 2
I side deck the Tigers and Nobleman and some other stuff. My opening hand is strong with Nobleman of Crossout, MoF and a Tiger along with some really strong support, so I feel good. He plays Pot of Greed, followed by Graceful Charity then he played Card Destruction and that really hurt me. It was a thing of beauty to get shut down by Time Seal, Mask of Darkness and Tsyukuomi. He got a Chaos Sorceror out on me, too. Congratulations.

GAME 3
I side deck again. This is where I fall into a clever trap and lose. I pay too much LP for the Royal Oppression and 7 Tools. Late in the game, I have 1100LP left and pay 800 when he activates Premature Burial. Then he special summons BLS and I only have 300LP left. Well. That's my mistake isn't it?

Oh well, it's all good. The guy I was suppose to play to see who got third place left, so I got the packs and I got a Rare Magical Scientist. That's a laugh.

The COOL thing about today was, my daughter came in SECOND place! That was great! She beat 2 of the best players in the store to make it to the finals and I was so proud!!! She had to face the Tsyukuomi deck in the finals and the match was tied one and one. She was winning the third game until a top decked Lightning Vortex cleared her field and that was that. Afterward, we both realized SHE had made a mistake because Horus LV6 is unaffected by Spell Cards! Oh no! She probably could have won! Oh well.

All in all it was a fun day, except for the traffic.....

That's it for this week. Regionals is coming up and IF I decide to go and run the gauntlet of Chaos Phoenix copy cat decks, I'll have a report for you from there. IF I decide NOT to go to Regionals, I'll have a report from the usual local store. I won't have a tournament report for Sunday becasue my eldest daughter has a ballet performance that evening.

Until next time, happy dueling!!!
