Tournament Report for May 21, 2005

Hi all!

Welcome to the weekend edition of the tournament report. I hope this finds you well and winning!

I got my first HATE MAIL last week! It was very surprising! As all of you know, I have a tendency to, well, "fly off the handle" on occasion, and rant and rave about a number of things and, this apparently upset one of my readers to no end! I have made many comments about the sorry state the last ban list thrust this game into. This particular reader wanted me to "shut up" and "just quit". FYI, I'm not some inexperienced noob that can't win. I have a Millenium Trophy in my house for being Store Champion. At one time, before MANTIS screwed everything in the world up, I was ranked 3rd in the state and 21st in the country. I have finished in the top third at every Regional event I have attended, never having more than two losses in 9 rounds. Many of the decks I have built for others consistantly finish in the top 4 of tournaments and one made it to 12th during a Regional event. I know what I'm talking about. I am simply saddend at the lack of creativity and the utter ridiculousness of the meta game right now.

This past weekend was a great example of just how lame and predictable this game is. During one of my tournament matches, my opponent and I were guessing what card each of us was going to play each turn and we got it right the majority of the time. We'd guess which moster each of us set and what card we were preparing to activate. I was not surprised at how many we guessed correctly, simply because the card base for any given tournament worthy deck is so limited and restricted. Many duels were quite boring. This is a game and should be FUN. The current ban list is sucking the FUN factor out. Who, deep down in their heart, truly believes otherwise?

I also had the unfun experience of having BLS, DMoC and Jinzo out on me by the second turn. TWICE! This is such an EASY thing to do. Pot, Graceful, Premature, Call of the Haunted and MoF make this an amazingly simple combo that can cripple you. It's an OTK. That ticked me off because it's just the LUCK factor and not a SKILL factor that determines the outcome.

"He who draws the broken cards first, wins". That's the current state of Yugioh. Too sad.

Well, anyway. I've gone back to working on my defense deck and a Mind on Air/Mind Crush/Convulsion of Nature/DD Designator deck. The defense deck is actually working a little better than before, and the Mind on Air deck is sick when it works. LoL. I would SO love to get one of those to finish in the semi finals. That would be good.

Enough of my pointless rambling! Onto the pointless tournament rambling!

I made one change to the deck. I put the Royal Decree back in the main deck and (HORRORS) took out the Mirror Force altogether. A lot of people think I'm an idiot for not running Mirror Force but, I'd rather Bottomless BLS than have him come back from the graveyard.

There was a good crowd today. Unfortunately, many of them came too late to sign up for the tournament. I don't think I've ever seen that many people in this location. Good!

ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS WARRIOR/CONTROL

This deck is a Drop Off, Don Zaloog kind of hand control deck. It's pretty good and hard to stop if he can wipe you hand out quickly enough.

GAME 1

He does Drop Off my Mobius when I could have tributed for him, so that sucked. He had attacked my Nimble so, I had monsters on the field and LP advantage. He wasn't really getting the draws he needed and I managed to clear his field and top deck a NoC when he set a Spirit Reaper when I had Zaborg and a Nimble on the field. Nimble kills him. GO NIMBLE!

GAME 2

I MST his Call of the Haunted on the first turn, summon Breaker and attack his face down Reaper. Next turn, he Snatch's my Breaker (typical) and attacks me with my own Breaker and his Spirit Reaper, taking out my Premature Burial.

I draw a Nimble and set it. He tributes Exiled Force to get rid of it and attacks me again, this time discarding my other Nimble.

It goes down hill from there. I do draw Heavy Storm and get my Breaker back but he kills it and I lose miserably. 0 - 8000.

GAME 3

I side deck this time. My Book of Moon, Enraged, Tigers, JInzo and Enemy Controller.

I go first and the two traps I get in my opening hand are Royal Decree and Call of the Haunted. I hate getting both of those in my opening hand. I set both of them. The only monster I have is a Magician of Faith so, I have to set her for no apparent reason.

He MSTs my Decree, of course. He activates Graceful Charity, of course. He summons Exiled Force AGAIN and tributes it for my Magician, which, I don't really care because I had nothing to get anyway.

I draw a Reaper and set it.

He sets a monster.

I draw NoC and take out his Sangan.

He plays Reinforcements and gets a DD Assailant. He attacks my Reaper. Haha.

I tribute my Reaper for Zaborg and destroy his Assailant. He has nothing to protect himself and Zaborg starts hammering at him and I win this one.

ROUND 2

MONARCHS VS CCC

This deck is so cookie cutter its amazing.

GAME 1

How broken is BLS? I'll tell you how broken he is. It's a great duel. We go back and forth for a while, trading life point damage. It's a long fun, duel. We counter each other and it's a really good duel. Suddenly, I'm in the driver's seat with a DMoC attached to my TER. He's top decking and I am winning 3000 to 100. He has ONE HUNDRED life points left. I have field advantage and card advantage. I should win on my next turn. He TOP DECKS BLS and I lose.

People. This should not happen! That was too much LUCK and NO SKILL! Yata/CED all over again. It's wrong and unfair.

GAME 2

I get owned by every broken, should have been banned or remained banned card in the first couple of turns. Delinquent, Graceful, Pot, Premature, Call of the Haunted, Jinzo, DMoC, BLS by the third turn and I am dead by the fourth turn. I didn't stand a chance. Not because of ANY SKILL involved, just luck. That's retarded.

ROUND 3

MONARCHS VS A KID

Well, this is a kid. I take it easy on him, but win easily. How did he get to the third round?

SEMI FINALS
MONARCHS VS BURN

This deck aggravates me. I side deck everything to counter this deck all the time, yet manage to draw into NONE of it.

GAME 1

Oh my. His Pot of Greed on the first turn, two Tremendous Fire and a Wave Motion Cannon I can't get rid of destroy me. Where is Mobius?

GAME 2

I side deck extensively. I want my Decree so badly. It's duels like this that make me wish I had two Decree.

I get a good first hand. He gets a bad one. He doesn't draw any monsters and Mobius takes care of his Messenger of Peace and Wave Motion Cannon. I MST what he sets in his end phase and I dominate this duel.

GAME 3

I beat myself. I Ring a Lava Golem, pay too much for Spell Cards when Curse of Darkness is active and I stall too long with TER. I wanted to draw into a Mobius with TER on the field but, I never did and he burned me up. Oh well. In retrospect, I made critical errors all throughout this duel.

I'm out in the Semi Finals again. Well, it's all good! Off to the second tournament of the day!

We got there right on time today and I started signing people up because our regular judge was dueling and he takes too long to get the tournament started.

ROUND 1

MONARCHS VS CLOWN CONTROL

I haven't dueled this gentleman in a long time so, I'm looking forward to it. He's been store champion and he's pretty funny and I've watched him use this deck before, so I'm ready.

GAME 1

An early Mobius gets rid of his S/T zone and I start to press the offensive. I pretty much have the duel in control until he gets out a Level Limit Area B and drops out a Horus LV6! That was unexpected! He didn't get a LV8 after he killed my Mobius and I asked him why he didn't get it and he said he didn't use LV8 in the deck, the LV6 was a big enough surprise as it is! The tide is turning to his favor until I draw Snatch Steal and take his Dream Clown, turning it to defense and destroying his LV6. After that, he can't recover and I win. Whew. I sweat that one out. I like the idea of a Horus/Clown deck. Sort of wierd. Hmmm.

GAME 2

I side deck in the Tigers and Ox. I hope the Tigers destroy his Clowns before they do anything.

Well, the Tigers work great. He Rings the first one and destoys my first Battle Ox after I whack a Goat token, but I draw another Tiger and it forces him to set everything and soon, Mobius takes care of his LLAB and Gravity Bind.

ROUND 2

MONARCHS VS ZOMBIE

Argh. Zombies hurt me. Why? I don't know. It's like that burn deck. I side deck everything to stop them, but never draw into them.

GAME 1

The broken cards kill me. Pot and Graceful. Discard Jinzo and a Vampire Lord. He Delinqent Duo's me and I discard Sinster. He Calls Jinzo back, Book of Life my Sinister to bring out his Vampire Lord and he special summons me to death.

GAME 2

I side deck Tigers, Royal Oppression, all that good zombie stoppage stuff. It works this time. The Tigers own him and I take him down fairly easily.

GAME 3

He side decks and I don't.

It's a good duel. I'm losing 3400 to 3600 but it's fun. The Tigers are hurting him again and so are the Royal Oppression. Both are slowing him down, and I feel like I can take control in the next turn. He draws Snatch Steal, one of the many cards that should see the ban list. He takes my Tiger, then plays Book of Moon on it and summons INJECTION FAIRY LILY!?!?! WTF!?!?! I am shocked beyond belief! Too funny. He kills me with Lily in a zombie deck! Hahaha. He side decked her in for his Cyber Jar.

Wow. I am OUT in the second ROUND! That's almost unheard of!

I loaned my Phoenix deck to a friend and it came in third so, that's cool. I still made it to the Semi Finals, sort of. We split the packs for him coming in third and he got a Mystic Swordsman LV4 (which I needed, urgh) and I got an Ultimate Covering Fire.

I dueled a CCCC deck again later that day for fun and got hammered with the same second turn BLS, Jinzo junk after Pot, Graceful, Premature, blah. I really flipped out! I quit Yugioh RIGHT there, but then started again a few minutes later....Hahah. I really need to calm down....

Well, that's it for this week. The last Georgia Regional Qualifier is next week and I suppose I will go and subject myself to the torture of facing 9 rounds of CCCC. Whatever. A tournament Saturday, a tournament Sunday and Regionals on Monday. Should be fun.
