 Yugioh Tournament Reports

Deck Name: Ojama Burner
Player Name: Lord of Change (I like GW products)
Location of Tournament: Student Union Building
Place: College Park, MD
Date: December 18th, 2005
Format: Advanced with Oct 05 Ban List
Participants: approx 350

I was thinking that with this being almost Christmas, there
would not be that many players. I was very wrong. This had almost
100 people more than any prior Md Regional, the organizers told me.
There were a few teams present but since I don't get out much, I
didn't recognize 'em, outside of the Greater DC's own Team Revolution.
There were some well-known names I recognized, too, like Shonen Jump
winner Brian Long and Shonen Jump T8'er Tyrome Cox. As well as
nationals and/or T8'ers from at least Virginia and Pennsylvania,
plus the Md players. I had decided all on my own to play a burn deck
and then saw that a similar deck T8'ed in a recent Shonen Jump. I was
worried that meant people would be ready for me. Read on and see ...

Deck List:
1 x SRL
1 x Messenger of Peace
2 x LL Area B
1 x Scapegoat
3 x Wave Motion Cannon (WMC)
1 x MST
1 x Dark Hole

2 x G-bind
3 x Threatening Roar
2 x Desert sunlight
2 x Ojama Trio
2 x Solemn Judgement
1 x Ceasefire
2 x Secret Barrel
2 x Just Desserts
1 x Torrential Tribute

1 x Sangan
1 x Cyber Jar
1 x Morphing Jar
1 x Mask of Darkness
1 x Night Assailant
1 x Tsukuyomi
1 x Des Koala
2 x Stealth Bird
1 x Mecha Dog Marron
1 x Lava Golem
1 x DDWL
1 x Gear Golem the Moving Fortress

Side:

1 x Mobius
1 x Gyaku-Gire Panda
2 x Des Wombat
2 x Mid-Shield Gardna (for soul control and dark world)
1 x Protector of Sanctuary (for draw engine decks)
1 x Jowls of Dark Demise (coz I like it)
1 x Silva
1 x Broww
1 x Elephant Statue of Disaster
2 x Chain Disappearance (take that L2 and Spirit Reaper)
2 x Bottomless Trap Hole

The deck is pretty cheap to construct and easy to play. Continuous
stall backed up with chainable stall. Use Ojama Trio to reduce your
opponent's monster options and fuel damage from secret barrel and
just desserts, as well as guaranteeing Lava Golem targets. Use Solemn
Judgement to shut down *anything* that would wreck your plans. Use
Cyber Jar and Morphing Jar to cycle cards to your hand and have
contingency stall and get to your burn cards. They also help fuel damage
from Des Koala, Secret Barrel and Just Desserts. Use Threatening
Roar as a contingency for when Mobius or Heavy Hits and you have no
Torrential. Also, it means your opponent can't take out your key monsters
like Morphing Jar, Cyber Jar and Mask of Darkness using Mystic Swordsman
L2 or Sasuke Samurai or monsters that negate the effects of monsters
they destroy in battle (e.g., Hades, Blade Knight some of the time).
Desert Sunglight also thwarts L2, Nobleman, Ex Force or Zaborg (sorta).
This deck also packs 3 cards to totally clear the field of monsters
(Torrential, Dark Hole, Cyber Jar), as well as multi-monster removal
in Lava Golem and targeted in Night Assailant, to try to keep your
opponent from swarming you.

Round 1 vs Danny (Table 137, long way to go)
Danny was playing a Dark
Hex Fusion/King Dragun deck. In game 1 I got out Messenger of Peace
and he drew no S/T removal. then I drew to 2 WMC's. Game over in
about 3 turns. Game 2 was similar, except I had G-bind going. I had
a Lava Golem ready but couldn't use because of King Dragun's effect.
Fortunately I drew into my burn quickly. I win 2-0 and my only LP
loss is from Messenger in Game 1.

Round 2 vs Casey/KC (not sure of spelling, sorry. Table 40, wOOt)
Casey was playing a Warrior Toolbox with Cyber Dragon and Spirit
Reaper support. I lost my notes on this one, sorry. Both games
were similar, though: I get knocked around a bit by DDA or Reaper,
Solemn Judgement Mobius and/or Heavy Storm and eventually my stall
takes hold. Ojama Trio is wonderful in a monster heavy environment
as your opponent will often have two monsters. The trio locks their board
and they have maybe Reaper to attack under your stall. as long as
you empty your hand, you take almost no damage. Your burn kicks in,
you win. Trio also combos with Dark Hole or Torrential for 900 LP
damage. I win 2-0, match record 2-0

Round 3 vs Ed (my first "Mat-ed" opponent, circa table 30)
Ed was playing a Warrior Toolbox with Cyber Dragon and Spirit Reaper
support. I lost my notes on this one but I remember it well. In game
one he applies constant pressure and I'm at 1600 life points while
he's at 1100. I summon DDWL and flip ceasefire for 1500 and game --
NOT! He smartly chains Enemy Controller and sacs his own Magician of
Faith to take over DDWL. He's at 100 LP and Ican't attack and
remove his assailant. Next round I think he smashes my DDWL and DDA
attacks for game. If I had attacked with DDWL and baited out the
Controller I could've chained Ceasefire and won. DOH!!!! A good lesson
in chaining. In game 2 he sides heavily and has me on the ropes. He
Snatches my Morphing Jar, Tsukus it and costs me whatever advantage
I'd gained from using it the turn before. Unfortunately for him, I
get about 6000 points worth of chainable burn in my hand (2 just
desserts and a secret barrel, i think) and have enough stall to
carry through. Although he lost this game, he also does a brilliant
job keeping his monster count just right so that i can't summon
Lava Golem and play another Ojama Trio and totally hose his monster
board. Awesome. In game 3, we both draw WMC's right off but no S/T removal.
I try to go aggro with the Des Wombats I sided in, but he has enough
removal to take care of them and I go down to his WMC. I lose 1-2.
Match 2-1.

Round 4 vs Anthony (table 27 -- I lose and move up, weird)
Anthony was running Pyramid Turtles but since I made a point of
not killing them, I'm not sure if it was a full on Zombie Build,
or a Zombie-friendly toolbox. In game 1 I take a Turtle hit, then my
stall kicks in and so does Ojama Trio. Just Desserts, Secret Barrels
and Stealth Bird finish this quickly. In game 2 I use Solemn to stop
Heavy Storm or Mobius. Use Ojama Trio again and then Just Desserts and,
I think, Des Koala to knock off about 5000 LP. I take a couple Sangan
pokes but then Gyaku-Gire Panda kicks in for a bunch of damage and
Secret Barrel finishes it. Games 2-0, Match Record 3-1

round 5 vs Sean (table 52 -- I win and move down, my tie breakers must
be bad)
Sean may've been running an anti-meta deck? I remember Kyco and
Blade Knight pounding on me. But also Cybers and Mobius, I think.
This starts of badly. Kyco takes out my Mecha Dog Marron and we each
take a 1000 LP from the effect. I then take beating from something
a couple rounds running -- kyco plus something, I think. I think I
clear a monster but Kyco hits and I'm at 600 LP. Finally, I draw a
G-bind or LL Area B. I get in Just Desserts, some Stealth Bird and
a big WMC to take game. In game two I put up Messenger and he draws
no, or practically no non-trib monsters for 6 or 7 turns. Secret
Barrels, Des wombat and Stealth Bird take care of this one for me.
Games 2-0, record 4-1.

round 6 vs Paul (around table 16 -- i might have rounds 6 and 7
backwards, i wrote down two R6's)
Paul looked to be running the Toolbox with Deikoichi and Pot of
Avarice deck. In game one, I take a couple spirit Reaper hits
and use Solemn Judgement Twice, which probably means Mobius and
Heavy Storm. Otherwise, though, my defenses hold firm and a
mixture of Torrentialed Ojamas, Secret Barrel, Stealth Bird,
Des Koala, Just Desserts and finally WMC nibble him to death. In
game 2, he draws no S/T removal, I draw a WMC and some other burn
and win in around 5 turns as he draws nothing to attack through
my defenses. Games 2-0, record 5-1.

round 7 vs Ryan (top table, another Mat)
Ryan was running a Toolbox/Deikoichi variant. Before the game he tells
a friend, "I hope I'm not playing against burn. My side deck is great
for Soul Control but I don't have anything for burn." Good news for me.
Game 1, I have to use a Solemn Judgement, which probably means Mobius or
Heavy, or maybe Mystic l2 if I had Cyber or Morphing Jar down. I get
in Ojama tokens, Just Desserts, Des Wombat and WMC for about 4000 to
finish the game. In game 2 I take hits from DDA and L2 early. I get in
Secret Barrel and then get to find out what happens when you chain 4
different cards to Heavy Storm (ojama trio, just desserts, threatening
roar, and scapegoat). Then my lock takes over. Looks like Secret
Barrel, Des Koala do a little damage, then Wave Motion Cannon does a
lot. Solemn to stop probably Mobius. And something, Ceasefire I think,
to finish the game. Games 2-0, record 6-1

round 8 vs Chris (top table -- ends up T8'ing this event)
Chris was running a Toolbox/Deikoichi variant. In game 1 I take
a hit from Drillroid or Bladeknight. Messenger of Peace comes on
and stays up for 4-5 turns. Then Sangan hits me. He played Confiscation
early and I can't remember what he chose out of my opening hand -- I was
lucky my first 5 cards were a mediocre draw. It looks like I had
to respond to MST or Dust Tornado with Just Desserts for 500 lP. Then
ojama trio and bigger just desserts. Followed by Stealth Bird and
probably Torrential by one or other of us. Des Koala flips for 800
damage and he's at 200. I have a big enough lead I draw to WMC to
end game 1 turn later. Game 2, he draws to confiscation early, then
swarms the board with Drillroid, Blade Knight and something else.
I draw to no good defense and go down quickly. Uggh. Easily my worst
defeat of the day so far. But that's one of the cool things about these
big events -- excellent opponents. My notes for game 3 are a mess.
I may've gotten in a shot with Sangan. Followed by probably Des Wombat
into Swordsman L2. I take a 1200 shot of some sort and then have to
use Solemn Twice - I think Magician of Faith to Heavy Storm, then
Magician booked and heavy storm. Somewhere in there a Secret Barrel
kicks in. Magician's going to have a third try at heavy storm after
being Reincarnated, but Ceasefire cuts her off. Or maybe that was game 3
of the next match? I think WMC or
Just Desserts to finish it off soon after. Man that was tough. Games
2-1, record 7-1

round 9 vs Eric (top table)
They print the standings. I have some of the worst tiebreakers of
anybody who's 7-1; guess that's a side effect of starting off
at table 137 and losing in round 3. If I win this match I'm guaranteed
top 8. If I lose, I'll get some prize packs, but just miss out on
tiebreakers. Eric is running what looks like Soul Control/Horus. In
round 1 I take an early hit from BladeKnight, I think. Looks like
I dark hole the field with Ojamas on it. Not sure if that was before or after
Blade Knight and something else whacked me for another 3500 damage.
I send off a WMC for 5000 LP damage and then play probably Just Desserts
and Secret Barrel or Ceasefire for game. In game 2 I get whacked for
3000 points almost right out of the box. probably MST or Breaker taking
out a stall card with no temporary stall to back it up and then a couple
hits from probably DDSurvivor. I send off a WMC for 4000 damage. And get
a Thousand Burn in with Stealth Bird. Stealth Bird gets attacked by
something and smashed, I think, or maybe Nobleman'd. I run Sangan into
Cyber Dragon, as my other choices were DDWL and Horus L4. I get Gyaku
Gire Panda. If I can summon and attack next round, he'll do enough
damage to Spirit Reaper or DDWL to win me game. I have Swords up. Most
people side out Sakaretsu Armor and Widespread, I think. So unless my
opponent draws S/T removal or Horus L6, I should win. He tributes for
Horus L6 which attacks through Swords and I lose. Another excellent
game. We are startng to run low on time. In game 3 I get an early
Secret Barrel, I think. Then Just Desserts after putting down Ojama Trio.
I have to Solemn Judgement something --normally Mobius or Heavy Storm.
Then I think I Dark Hole the field because Reaper and Sangan were both out
and that would chew up too many life points. I get in a little Stealth Bird
burn and then Torrential in response to an L2 summons getting in some
more Trio damage. I have a WMC started and before my opponent can draw
anything to stop it or maybe I have Lava Golem going. Game ends just as
the Judge comes over to tell us we are going to have to invoke time
procedures. Games 2-1, record 8-1.

Top 8 vs Keith

Keith is playing what looks like Toolbox/Deikoichi type deck.
In game 1, I start off getting poked by Sangan. I play Ojama trio to
leave Keith with 1 monster zone and I think have to chain Just Desserts
to some sort of S/T removal, for 2000 damage. He brings on reaper and I
take 1300 damage two rounds running. I play Dark Hole, clear the field
and do some Ojama damage. More tokens hit the field, I'm not drawing
anything and neither is he. Eventually he draws something where I have
to clear the field -- Desert Sunlight on Cyber Jar in response to X-force
or L2 summons, I think. More Ojama token damage. I get Secret Barrel
which I'm able to set off for 2600 damage and I think I then start a WMC
and set Ceasefire or Just Desserts. GG. In game 2 I take some Sangan
damage and do a lot of little bits of damage -- probably chainable traps
responding to MST, Dust Tornado, Heavy. I take a 3500 whack one turn.
He has Chaos Sorceror out and RFG's something. I finally draw some stall
and Stealth Bird. I burn him to 100 LP but Breaker finishes off my last
continuous stall. And threatening roar's used up. Next round he will
be able to clear Stealth Bird and has game in 1-2 turns. I have Mobius.
I could sit there and hope to draw something next turn that'll let me end
game. I decide to summon Mobius hit his trap and attack for game. Ooops.
Mobius vanishes down a bottomless hole. I lose. Stealth Bird didn't take
out an Ojama token because his attack isn't high enough,if u were
wondering. Round 3 -- to make a long story short. He has horrible luck
with his draws. I have pretty good luck. His one chance to turn it around
I Solemn Judgement whatever he was gonna do. On to top 4. Nats
Invite coming to me. Games 2-1, Record 9-1

Top 4 vs Nick

I am tired and so is he. I think he's playing Toolbox with Deikoichi.
In game 1 I get up some stall, he starts poking me with Sangan and then
L2 as well. I set a couple of monsters just to slow down the damage.
I have some WMC's ticking. I'm at about 4000, he sets a third monster.
I play secret barrel for 1600, just desserts for 1500 and send off the
WMC's for 8100 points of damage in one turn. GG. Round 2 I lock him up
with Ojama tokens. He sided in a bunch of S/T removal, draws none of it
and is reduced to attacking for 1350 per round with Kinetic Soldier.
I play Just Desserts for 2500, WMC for 3000 and have Secret Barrel go off
for 2800 over about a 2 turn period. Games 2-0. Record 10-1

Finals vs ???

Everybody was so tired we decided to call it a night as there's zero
difference in prizes, etc. I think my tiebreakers will put me second
as my would-be opponent was the only undefeated player.

Final Record: Games 21-5, Matches 10-1

Enjoy!
