Amnael’s Alchemy

January 5, 2006

Amnael is the seventh and final of the Seven Stars in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime series. Besides being a powerful and unforgiving duelist who specializes in “Alchemy” based tactics there is more to this powerful opponent then even Juudai (Jadan) knows! Although the Seven Stars story arc ended last season in the Japanese version of GX, it has just fired up here in the states, so stay tuned for the amazing confrontation between this dueling bad-boy and our hero very soon!

Three of Amnaels many alchemic cards have been released as pack-in promotion cards in the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! Expert 2006 gameboy advanced game. All three of these cards are powerful monsters that rely on combos that involve abusing RFG or “Removed from Game” effects.

Golden Homunculus
Light/Warrior/6/1500/1500
This card's attack strength is increased by the number of your cards removed from the game times 300.

Golden Homunculus is the first card I’ll be looking at today. He’s Light and a Warrior, which is fairly good stats. to start off with. He’s a level 6 monster with 1500 attack and 1500 defense, but due to his effect he’s going to be a lot bigger than that! This cards attack will be increased by the number of your cards that are currently removed from the game. Since this card increases for all cards that are removed, not just monsters you can make full use of the RFG engine to use this card to its fullest potential.

Homunculus can be searched to the hand by Critter (Sangan) and can be directly brought to the field by Shining Angel. This can make Homunculus a good addition to a combo deck that involves Banisher of Light, which is a key card in an RFG deck. You can search both Banisher and Homunculus via. Angel as well as Twlight Zone Warrior Lady (D.D. Warrior Lady), who is arguably one of the best RFG monsters in the entire game.

I could see Homunculus being used in a deck based around it and the RFG idea itself. With a lot of monsters out of the game you can pump Golden Homunculus up to be a pretty hefty beat stick. Three monsters removed will give him 2400 attack, while 5 monsters can bring his attack power to a whopping 3000! I’ve seen RFG decks sometimes remove somewhere around 8-10 cards from play in an average duel. Imagine just how powerful this card can be in the right hands.

Primeval Sun - Helios
Light/Pyro/4/?/?
This card's attack and defense strength are equal to number of monsters removed from the game times 100.

The second of Amnael’s removal based monsters is a strange looking card called Primeval Sun – Helios. It’s a level 4 monster, so it has no sacrifice cost for summoning. Helios can fuel chaos being a Light main-type, its also a Pyro sub-type, which may have some kind of use. Since Helios has no base attack or defense it cannot be searched by Critter (Sangan) or any other monsters effect. This may hinder it’s playability just a bit, since it cannot be easily accessed whenever a player wants it.

Helios gains attack and defense strength for each monster removed from the game. This effect makes it very similar to Golden Homunculus, but Homunculus gains attack for each of your cards, while Helios gains attack for any monster removed from the game, whether they are yours or belong to your opponent. The increase is very small though, gaining only 100 attack for each monster. It would take 19 monsters removed from the game to even give it significant attack points.
Since Helios cannot be searched by anything and cannot gain a sufficient amount of attack without a great amount of luck and overextension on the player’s behalf it should only be run for its intended purpose. Helios is basically just here to be the sacrifice bait for Duo Megistos. Again, this is a card that is only for use in a strict RFG deck, but this card is a lot less playable than that of the Golden Houmunculus.

Helios Duo Megistos
Light/Pyro/6/?/?
This card can be special summon by sacrificing a [Primeval Sun - Helios] on your field. This card's attack and defense strength are equal to number of monsters removed from the game times 200. When this card is destroyed as result of battle and sent to the cemetery, special summon this card at the end phase, and increase this card's attack and defense strength by 200.

Duo Megistos is a level 6, Light main-type, Pyro sub-type monster and the final of the three alchemy cards I’m looking at today. You cannot normal summon Duo Megistos, except by sacrificing Helios. This makes Duo very hard to use, adding in the factor that it has no set base attack power and therefore cannot be searched by the usual cards, and we have ourselves a very situational monster.

Duo gains attack and defense points equal to the number of monsters removed from the game by 200 points. This is a better increase then Helios has, but still leaves something to be desired. Duo has a built in recursion effect that can help increase its playability a bit though. When destroyed in battle it is special summoned back and gains another 200 point increase to its attack and defense points. This can help Duo survive while its low on attack and possibly gain a great amount of attack power in the long run.

Duo however, suffers the same problems of many monsters in the current metagame though. It will be easily destroyed by magic, trap, and monster effects. Most of the effects out there are one for one advantage engines as well. Cards like Earth Crusher (Smashing Ground) and Reactive Armor (Sakuretsu Armor) can kill Duo extremely fast, making all of your patient planning and sacrificing a joke. I really think because of this flaw that Duo loses a lot of its playability, and is possibly just too hard to play at all.

Now I’m going to build a deck out of the cards that I have reviewed! Amnael’s deck will focus on removing cards from the duel in order to give his monsters a power boost! I will use many combos in order to get his cards to the field and get enough cards out of play to power them up!
