6 - 6 - 6 : The Dangerous Dice
August 22, 2005

Welcome to my second article! Today I’ll be discussing a set of cards released back in Valuable Book 6. These are the 6 6 6 dice cards. Konami decided to pull a bit of a joke this time around when releasing three dice based cards, all with sixes in their names in the sixth valuable book. Whether this was an evil omen or just an unlikely coincidence, we can never forget how VB6 changed the OCG forever, or at least for awhile, with its release of a certain overpowered draw engine that came in the form of Sixth Sense.

The First card I’ll be looking into is Maximum Six.

Maximum Six
Earth Main-type
Warrior Sub-type
Level 6
1900/1600

When you successfully sacrifice summon this card, roll a six sided die once. This cards base attack strength is increased by the number rolled times 200 points while this card remains face up on the field.

Maximum Six is a very interesting monster that is often associated with Jounouchi from the anime. In fact, almost all three of the cards in VB6 are Jou related cards. Maximum Six is a chancy card to play. First it’s stats. It’s a level 6 monster, so you’ll need one sacrifice to summon it. Level 6 can be good because you can morph it into cards like Dark Blade, or Dragon Soldier if needed. Nineteen hundred attack is quite weak for a sacrifice monster, with the exception of, Perseus that is.  But this 1900 attack will be greatly increased through the use of it’s effect.

When you sacrifice summon him you get to roll a die and increase his base attack by the number rolled times 200. Lets see just how powerful he can become depending on the corresponding die rolls:

1 – 200
2 – 400
3 – 600
4 – 800
5 – 1000
6 – 1200

So Maximum Six can be anywhere from a 2100 attack monster at the least, to a 3100 attack monster at the most! No matter what you’re getting a pretty tough beat stick. I’d say he’ll usually end up with about 2300-2700 attack. However he won’t get his effect when he is special summoned in any way. So the whole dump it into the cemetery and revive method will not work here. Sadly as cool as he is, your still taking a chance in summoning it. It just doesn’t have the reliability of your other Sacrifice monsters. Maximum Six will most likely have to stick to Jounouchi character decks or some dice themed decks.

Now on to the next of the three sixes.

Dangerous Machine type-6
Continuous Magic
During a players standby phase, that player rolls a six sided dice. One of the following effects is activated corresponding to the dice roll. 1: Discard 1 card from your hand.  2: Your opponent discards 1 card from his or her hand. . 3: Draw 1 card from your deck. 4: Your opponent draws 1 card from his/her deck. 5: Destroy 1 Monster on your opponent's side of the field. 6: Destroy this card.

This is a very interesting Continuous Magic card. Once again we have a dice roll as the central focus for pulling off the effect, but this time the card will either help, or hurt your opponent as well. Rolling a one will cause pain to your hand, but if your opponent rolls it then you just pulled off some free hand disruption. Rolling a 2 is definately good but if your opponent rolls it, then it’s not good for you.

Three and 4 work the same way by either adding advantage or taking it away from a player. Five is in my opinion one of the best rolls you can get on this one, since you get free field removal for it. Six will destroy the machine, which in some circumstances may happen right away. Overall, this card just makes complete chaos out of the game. With odd effects pulling off every turn, with enough luck either player can take a quick lead over the other.

The only problem with this card is it’s very uncontrollable. You can’t really tell if it’s going to help you or hurt you when you play it. I compare this card to Ectoplasm a lot in that regard. But even Ectoplasm is easier to use to your advantage through many combos. There’s not really many combos you can use here, say for a Dice Re-Roll or two. But that still may not help you out in the end.

Like Maximum Six, Dangerous Machine also fails to be that competitive of a card in the long run. It is a lot of fun though, and I highly recommend trying a few out in casual duels. Getting 2 to 3 Dangerous Machines out on the field at once could cause a riot of a game. As for decks to use this card in , a dice based deck or a Jounouchi character deck will call this card right at home.

Now on to the final of the three sixes of VB6: The Sixth Sense. This is the only truly competitive card out of the three and was run in almost every OCG deck in play prior to the latest restrictions.

The Sixth Sense
Trap
Name two numbers from 1 to 6. Your opponent than rolls a six sided die, and if the result is either of the stated numbers, draw that many card from your deck. If not, you must send a number of cards from the top of your deck into the cemetery equal to the number rolled.

What at first seems like a perfectly stable draw engine hides a broken card. I’m not sure if Konami meant for The Sixth Sense to end up like it was or if it was just a mistake on their part, but there is a trick to always taking full advantage of The Sixth Sense. Simply always name 5 and 6 as your numbers for the roll. This way you will always draw the maximum number of cards possible from the roll.

There’s no reason to name anything else. Unless of course you’re using a deck based on Reversed Worlds and need tons of cards in your cemetery, otherwise you should never name 2 and 4 or 1 and 3 because it just adds better advantage with 5 and 6. This is the fatal flaw of Sixth Senses design. Also, no matter what, it is a deck thinner, so even if you’re discarding cards from your deck as the cost, it’s not really a cost at all.

Demon based decks could easily take advantage of this card, and Chaos decks can as well. It adds the necessary cards into the cemetery just fine for summoning Dark Necrophia or Chaos Soldier. Sixth Sense saw major abuse before it’s banning on the last list and had almost become a staple card in every deck in the OCG. This card needed to be banned since it offers far too much card advantage. This card wins duels, and for a single card to perform such a feat is not good. Especially a card based completely on the luck of the roll.

Well that’s all for VB6, quite an interesting promo assortment I’d have to say. Back when Sixth Sense was not banned it was very hard to get your hands on these promos, but nowadays you can get Dangerous Machine and Maximum Six for quite cheap and Sixth Sense as well. I’m now going to build the basic structure of a casual play deck that uses and abuses Dice Rolls as it’s main theme. I’ll incorporate Maximum Six and Dangerous Machine into the deck, but since Sixth Sense is banned, it will have to sit this one out.

The deck abuses many forms of dice rolls and re-rolls. Night Assassins are in there just in case Machines backfire on you and can grab back your fallen Dice Pods. Dice Pod is a great burn engine that you can abuse with a little luck. Just watch out, when it backfires, it does it big time.

Well that’s all for today! I hope you enjoyed my second article and stay tuned for my future articles as well!

Till next time,
