Mofox’s journey from Newbie to the UK National Tournament.
Another Turn by Turn Duel

Duel 9 continued straight after Duel 8.  Ilya and myself used the same decks but would the outcome be any different?

Ilya says:

you should start this one

Paul says:

ok I drw 6

Paul says:

I set 1 mon and 1 s/t

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

activate Swords of Revealing Light

Paul says:

chain MST

A bit of a hasty move, Swords wasn’t really hindering me at this point and it would definitely have been wiser to hang onto MST for a little bit longer.

Ilya says:

the swords "revealing" effect still goes through though revealing your . . . . ..

Paul says:

sangan

Ilya says:

and MST was your FD right?

Paul says:

yep

Ilya says:

normal summon mystic tomato

Ilya says:

tomato attacks sangan

Ilya says:

what do you bring from deck to hand?

Paul says:

DDWL

Remembering the last duel, I again selected DDWL from Sangan’s search.

Ilya says:

end turn

Paul says:

I drw

Ilya must have felt safe behind his Mystic Tomato, if I attacked it he would be able to search for a monster probably Newdoria if he copied his moves from the last duel.  However I had a plan to prevent his search.

Paul says:

I activate reinforcement of the army and search marauding Capt.

Paul says:

I summon marauding Capt.

Paul says:

and use its effect to summon DDWL

Paul says:

DDWL atks your mystic tom and removes both from play with its effect

Ilya says:

8000-7900

Paul says:

marauding atks directly

Paul says:

8000-6700

Ilya says:

8000-6700

Paul says:

I set 1 s/t and end

By removing Mystic Tomato from play Ilya could not use its search option to find a monster, this paved the way for Marauding Capt to hit Ilya’s life points directly.

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

set 1 monster and end my turn

Ilya was now on the defensive.

Paul says:

ok I drw

Paul says:

I summon DDS and equip with BBS

Paul says:

and atk your FD

Ilya says:

my cyber jar

Ouch! talk about another hasty move, Cyber Jar was now ready to turn the duel on its head.  Sometimes I really hate Cyber Jar, with its effect going off it was about to randomize the field and advantage could end up either way.  It’s my own fault though I should have been preparing for a possible flip monster and shouldn’t have just stormed at his monsters.  In addition I just lost 2 monsters and Ilya had only lost 1 (which was his cyber jar anyway)

Ilya says:

I take 1300 damage

Ilya says:

8000-5400

Ilya says:

all mons are destroyed

Ilya says:

your 5 then my 5

Paul says:

Ojama Trio

Giant Trunade

Marauding Capt (set fd)

Dust Tornado

Mystic Tom (set fd)

Ilya says:

Sangan (ATK), Exiled Force (ATK), Cannon Soldier (ATK), Dust Tornado, Last Will ([to hand])

Interestingly I set my monsters face down.  Now it was still my battle phase so if I had put them in attack position I could’ve continued to attack his newly summoned monsters.  Looking at the monsters that Ilya got I could easily have knocked some of his monsters out of the way.  Mystic Tom could’ve suicided into Cannon Soldier and got its search off, and Cannon Soldier would then be gone.  Marauding could’ve picked off either one of Sangan or Exiled Force and the newly summoned monster from Mystic Tom’s search could’ve taken out the remaining monster.  In previous assessments of turn-by-turn duels I’ve mentioned about the initiative of having Cyber Jar activated on either players turn.  I should’ve really put my monsters in attack mode regardless of what Ilya was gonna get (unless any of my monsters were FLIP effect monsters), this way I would be able to use the initiative if I had it.  If Ilya had drawn a lot more and high ATK value monsters and I couldn’t use the initiative, then I could always set some s/t as defense.  In this duel though I wasted the initiative and this was a crucial mistake in the duel.

Ilya says:

still your turn

I wondered about what happened to DDS after the Cyber Jar flip.

Paul says:

right question time

Ilya says:

shoot

Ilya says:

if it’s about your DDS then yes he's coming back at then end of your turn

Ilya says:

he was sent out of play right

Ilya says:

let me ask ronin

Paul says:

erm I don't think he was

Paul says:

cyber jar sent him to the graveyard, and then BBS has no Mon so that just goes to the GY as well I think

Ilya says:

yes he's in the GY. BBS has to be destroyed in order for him to be rfg'd and then his effect would activate. but he was sent to the GY lets continue

This shows how my understanding of the game rules has developed.  Let me explain what happened here a little more.  I was using DD Survivor in conjunction with Big Bang Shot because their effects compliment each other.  When BBS is destroyed it removes from play the monster it is equipped to.  If DDS is removed from play then it is summoned back to the field in your end phase.  So you can see that BBS’s negative part of its effect is countered by DDS’s abilities.  Now in the Cyber Jar case, DDS was destroyed and sent to the graveyard this left BBS with no monster to be equipped to and therefore also goes to the graveyard by what is known as a Game Mechanic.  A Game Mechanic is basically a rule or condition that exists while playing the game.  An equip card has a mechanic in the game that means it must be equipped to a monster at all times to be active on the field of play.  If it is not equipped to a monster then it can’t exist on the field of play and is removed from the field to the graveyard.

Ilya says:

you have your m. cap and m. tom FD and I have Cannon Soldier, X Force and Sangan in atk modes.

Ilya says:

8000-5400

Paul says:

I also have a set s/t

Paul says:

I set 2 more s/t and end turn

Ilya had gotten the upper hand due to the Cyber Jar flip and my poor play so I needed to do something to affect his gameplay.  By setting 2 more s/t I now had 3 on the field.  Ilya had no idea what any of them were and as such it put pressure on him to think about what possible counters I could have.  This is a technique that new players should look at starting to try and use.  Essentially it is about playing mind games with your opponent, but this is all part of the strategy of the game.

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

normal summon Breaker, response?

Paul says:

no

Ilya says:

set s/t, response?

Paul says:

no

Ilya says:

I'm gonna ask everytime cause you have 3 s/t's on the filed and I have to operate carefully.

Paul says:

I understand, hence why I put them there

Ilya says:

your field is 2 set mons (from c. jar) and 3 set s/t's right

Paul says:

correct

Ilya says:

I activate Last Will

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

no

Ilya says:

offer as tribute my Exiled Force, for their own effect, to destroy your set mystic tomato

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

     nope

Ilya says:

for my x Force

Ilya says:

Last Will's (state) activates its effect

Ilya says:

allowing me to special summon

Ilya says:

Hand of Nephthys

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

nope

Ilya says:

you still have 3 s/t's right?

Paul says:

yes still got 3

Ilya was building some field presence and with Hand of Nephthys on the field it was obvious which card would be coming soon.

Paul says:

just confirm your current field for me please?

Ilya says:

Breaker (ATK 1900), Cannon Soldier (ATK 1400), Hand (ATK 600) , Sangan (ATK 1000) and a set s/t [which I set this turn].

Ilya says:

discard counter off of breaker to destroy your middle set s/t (its the second one from either end, lol.

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

you got dust, and I chain to destroy your set s/t

1 down and 2 to go.  Chaining my dust to Ilya’s breaker token, essentially wasted his token and at the same time he lost one of his own s/t

Ilya says:

you got my dust

Ilya says:

now I offer as tribute my Hand of Nephthys and Sangan to special summon Sacred phoenix of Nephthys from hand

Ilya says:

Response?

Paul says:

I have a question

Ilya says:

no you can't activate Ojama trio while I'm tributing

Ilya says:

that's what I'm actually trying to dodge

Paul says:

gutted

Ilya says:

It’s a mere moment in which I offer monster from (4) to (3) because 2 leave and one comes on

Now there have been some great articles recently on Metagame.com about activation costs (I recommend everyone, newbie or not, read them).  They help explain why Ojama Trio can’t be chained.  Phoenix is going to be summoned via Hand of Nephthys’ effect.  Now you can chain cards to monster effects (as long as you follow the chaining rules) but if I explain the chain and how an activation cost works then you will see why I can’t activate Ojama Trio.  Remember when I mentioned the differences between activation and resolution you’ll need to remember that also.  So simply activation costs are done at the activation stage.  If this activation cost involves the removal of monsters then that is done then.  So if we apply that to this scenario.

Firstly I’ll discuss a hypothetical.  If Hand of Nephthys’ effect had an activation cost that meant that itself and another monster must leave the field in order to activate the card then Ilya would have had to discard them at the start of the chain, so they have already left the field.  Now if I wanted to activate Ojama Trio in response at that point there would be 3 available slots and I could activate Ojama Trio.  Then the chain would resolve with Ojama Trio first, putting 3 tokens on the field.  Then Hand of Nephthys’ effect would try to resolve special summoning Phoenix.  However as there would be no available (in this hypothetical case) slots Phoenix would instead be sent to the graveyard.

Now in the real case (as what actually happened above).  Hand of Nephthys effect doesn’t require an activation cost.  Therefore when it is activated all monsters are still on the field until resolution.  If I then wanted to chain Ojama Trio, I can’t because there is an activation requirement that there are 3 available monster slots when activated and in this case there aren’t.  Hence there is no chain and Hand of Nephthys effect resolves, Hand and Sangan are removed and Phoenix is special summoned to the field.

Ilya says:

Sangan's effect brings to my hand

Ilya says:

magician of faith

Ilya says:

now

Ilya says:

let me have some fun

Paul says:

sure thing, I’ll try not to ruin it

Ilya says:

Cannon Soldier attacks your FD Marauding Captain

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

no

Ilya says:

then Sacred Phoenix attacks for (2400) damage

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

no

Ilya says:

then Breaker (1600)

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

sak armour

Ilya says:

on?

Paul says:

breaker

Ilya says:

5600-5400

Ilya says:

ok did I normal summon in that turn?

Paul says:

you normal summoned breaker this turn

Ilya says:

right

Ilya says:

so I'm bound to receive the ojamas soon

Ilya says:

sigh

Ilya says:

end turn

Paul says:

that's what they are there for

Paul says:

ok I drw

Ilya says:

sorry for the lengthy turn

Paul says:

no probs it was a cool turn

Paul says:

I'm actually surprised I think I got off quite lightly

Only in terms of life point damage, I was seriously behind in terms of field advantage but I could catch up if played right.

Ilya says:

let's see what you do to counter

Ilya says:

that’s what happens when you set a proper defense

Paul says:

but now I have got a phoenix to contend with

Paul says:

right lets see I activate Ojama trio

Paul says:

chain?

Ilya says:

nope (nothing to chain with)

Paul says:

I set 1 Mon and 1 s/t and end turn

Now that was my 2nd HUGE mistake in this duel and I mean H U G E!!!!.  I left Cannon Soldier on the field.  That meant that the Ojama Tokens I had just put on the field just became a guaranteed 1500 life point damage to me and no consequence to Ilya.  Stupid and very newbish move.

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

you made 1 slight mistake

Ilya says:

leaving my cannon soldier on the field

Ilya says:

1st - heavy storm

Paul says:

I forgot about him

Ilya says:

what was your set s/t?

Paul says:

giant trunade

Ilya says:

then Sacred Phoenix attacks your set mon

Paul says:

shining angel

Ilya says:

what do you special summon in atk mode?

Paul says:

magician of faith

Ilya says:

wow, nothing better huh?

Paul says:

nope

Ilya says:

cannon soldier cleans her clock

Ilya says:

to the tune of 1100 damage

Ilya says:

4500-5400

Paul says:

I concur

Ilya says:

next I send Ojama token 1, Ojama token 2, Ojama token 3, Sacred phoenix and Cannon Soldier to the graveyard for Cannon Soldier's effects

Ilya says:

effect repeated 5 times

Ilya says:

I take 900 damage

Ilya says:

you 2500

Ilya says:

2000-4500

Ilya says:

set 1 mon and end turn

Paul says:

ok I drw

Paul says:

your field is just 1 set mon

Ilya says:

yup

Paul says:

I activate SORL

Paul says:

and set 1 mon and end

Ilya says:

revealing Dekoichi and allowing me to draw a card

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

set 2 s/t, summon Tsukuyomi to flip Dekoichi face down and end my turn

Paul says:

ok I drw

Paul says:

I activate reinforcement of the army

Ilya says:

no response

Ilya says:

question is what you bring . .. .

Paul says:

and bring DDS to hand

Paul says:

I summon DDS in atk mode and set 1 s/t

Paul says:

and end turn

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

flip Dekoichi and draw 1 card

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

no

Ilya says:

summon tsuku to flip deko back down

Ilya had a Dekoichi/Tsukuyomi draw engine in place and with 2 s/t set on the field they were also well protected.  My hand was awful and I needed to quickly disrupt his extra draws before he got the options he needed to finish me off.

Ilya says:

response

Paul says:

activate BOM to put tsuku in fd def

Ilya says:

so both of them are facedown.

Ilya says:

hmm

Paul says:

yep

Ilya says:

set s/t and end turn

Paul says:

ok I drw

Ilya says:

no response

Paul says:

flip summon my fd command knight, response?

Ilya says:

no

Paul says:

you have 3 s/t set correct

Ilya says:

yup

Ilya says:

and 2 fd def monsters

Paul says:

and my swords still has another turn

Ilya says:

right

Paul says:

ok I equip DDS with BBS

Paul says:

respond?

Ilya says:

no I do not a have a response

Paul says:

DDS atk your fd tsuku, response?

Ilya says:

I win (that’s the response)

Ilya says:

r u ready for this?

Paul says:

what is it?

Ilya says:

1st - I activate Magic Cylinder (do you wish to chain?)

Paul says:

have nothing to chain

Ilya says:

then I will to make it hurt a bit more

Ilya says:

I chain to my own Cylinder my Ceasefire

Ilya says:

and to my Ceasefire I chain Call of the Haunted

Ilya says:

2200 from Cylinder + 2500 from Ceasefire

Finished in style.

So there we have it a break down of another of my duels against Ilya.  Now before I get a load of emails claiming how I made this stupid mistake and that stupid mistake.  Please take into context where I am coming from.  This was my 9th ever duel, and at the present I only have 30+ duels worth of experience to be able to analyse this duel.  I will no doubt have made some mistakes which is fine, and I do want to know what they are so that I can improve my only request is no bashing and no flaming.  I want your help but I won’t tolerate abuse.

So hopefully now, you newbies can see more of my thought processes and hopefully they will help you in your own duelling decisions.  In contrast to the last duel and using the same decks, Ilya was victorious (with a nice combo at the end I might add!).  As you can see though I made some massive errors in the duel that cost me the win.

There were some useful rulings explanations as well.  One ruling that has cropped up in emails in response to my last turn-by-turn duel was that of Ilya’s tributing of Ojama Tokens for its effect.  If Ilya uses Ojama Tokens for Cannons Soldiers effect, then he doesn’t receive the 300 burn damage per token, as they have to be destroyed to burn the opponent.

I’ve also been getting some great emails regarding my Ebay experience.  I would just like to thank all of you for helping and offering advice.  I will be compiling an Article called Ebay the Final Word, which will bring together all the advice I have received so far, so that all you newbies can get a fuller picture of buying and selling on Ebay.

Also thank you to those who are offering trades via emails.  My collection isn’t great but I am swapping rare/ultra rare/super rare/secret and promo rares for common cards.  I will get my deck together soon and will be appearing in local tournaments very soon.  In fact I think my nearest shop, which holds regular tournaments, is Fanboy3 in Manchester, home to the new UK National Champion Wayne Pinkney.  Well Done to Wayne, hopefully I can join you next year!

My email address is mofox9@hotmail.co.uk email me for any help or advice or even your opinions on my articles.  I would love to hear your opinions and if you have any suggestions to improve them then let me know.  I will reply to all emails that are sent to me.  Remember newbies no question is a stupid question.

Until next time fellow duellists!
