Dark Magician of Chaos
- #
IOC-065

When this card is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned successfully, you can add 1 Spell Card from your Graveyard to your hand. A monster that is destroyed by this monster as a result of battle is removed from play instead of going to the Graveyard. When this card is destroyed or removed from the field, it is removed from play.

We finish off our banlist weeks with the other card that has been unbanned: Dark Magician of Chaos has now moved from Forbidden straight to Unlimited, probably thanks to its new errata from Yugi’s Legendary Decks.

The errata was rather simple, actually. Instead of DMoC adding a Spell Card to your hand when he’s summoned, he now adds it at the End Phase. This prevents him from being abused as he was in the past in Decks like Perfect Circle, Dark Armed Return, and Airblade Turbo.

I would say that this errata killed any use that DMoC had, but realistically, he wasn’t good anyway, and could have been Unlimited without an errata. He’s way too slow to be effective, and has been for quite a long time. The errata means he probably won’t ever be a problem in the future, which is good, but it also probably killed any chance of him being good too.

Oh well, what can you do?

Dark Magician of Chaos

This is another card that I've been saying could be unbanned for a while.  It should have been unbanned a few years ago.  Now, it's at 3.  But, the downside is that this card got a nerf. You get the Spell Card during the End Phase rather than immediately.  This nerf was unnecessary considering that this card would not have been overpowered even if were taken off the forbidden list with its original effect in tact.  It's also not as broken as it once was.  During the heyday of the Chaos era, Spells like Pot of Greed, Delinquent Duo, Graceful Charity and Metamorphosis dominated the game.  They're all currently banned.  Now, although some archetypes rely on strong spells, we've largely shifted to an time period (in the past 7 years) in which monsters have the most powerful effects - and not Spells. , On the bright side, it has strong ATK, banishes monsters destroyed in battle (which can hurt Pendulums).  Although times have gotten more competitive, there are more ways to Special Summon this card (like Pendulum, if you got a 9+ scale) than ever.  Having to wait for your Spell Card is an unfortunate restriction, but it doesn't affect the overall card advantage of this card.  If we're looking at generic LV8 monsters, DMOC is still one of the better ones.

And for the next ban list, here's a list of cards I'd like to see some of which unbanned (as is): Elemental Hero Stratos, Redox Dragon Ruler of Boulders, Sangan, Tribe-Infecting Virus, El Shaddoll Construct and Time Seal.  The following cards can also be unbanned with hard "Once Per Turn" clauses: Ultimate Offering, Mass Driver, Butterfly Dagger Elma, Substitoad, Mind Master, Makyura the Destructor, Magical Scientist,

T-REX Dark Magician of Chaos

Sadly, sadly, this card has turned from decent, to borderline junk... Hence why its gone straight from being Banned to a 3 of card.

DMoC looks almost exactly the same as it did when it was first released, BUT, there is one slight, teeny little difference... It now MUST remain face-up until the End Phase of the turn in which it was Summoned, otherwise, you will be unable to gain any Spell cards at all via its effect, leaving it vulnerable to removal as well as Negation... Since not being there on the field will essentially mean that its Negated. And so just like MST "Negates" as per the joke, when it comes to DMoC, Compulsory Evacuation Device Negates could be the joke instead.

Furthermore, since it doesn't add the card to hand until the End Phase, unless you are adding a Quickplay, you'll not have any opportunity to utilise it until your next turn... Assuming that it comes.

Disappointing Errata to a card that not only really didn't need it to begin with, but that shouldn't realistically have been Banned for as long as it should have been.

Rating: 2  Play this for fun, collect it for memory sake... But for a Level 8 2 Tribute monster, there are BETTER options... Ones that don't have to wait until the End Phase and that cannot be "Negated" by BTH or CED, perhaps!!!

Hello Pojo Fans,

Errata strikes again! This time it is one of the best Spellcaster-Type monsters ever: Dark Magician of Chaos.

Same effect as before, except you'll be adding a spell from your grave during your End Phase instead of immediately. Also, DMoC's effect can only be used once per turn. That last part matters now because he is unlimited. As a Spellcaster player since the beginning, I love seeing this beast return. While some hate on this card for not being as good as before, I see it more as a need for instant gratification vs being patient. So you have to wait to use the spell you brought back to your hand rather than getting to play it right away. You still likely are to have a 2800ATK monster with removal powers upon attacking. Yang Zings hate this guy, as well as several searchers. So many ways to Special Summon this guy, he works great with Trade-In and Allure of Darkness, and you can now run three of him!

The card is still a great card to use if it fits your strategy. Is he still as good as he used to be? No. The game changes, cards get changed, but you will still get that spell and have it for next turn.

Advanced-4/5- 3 gives you more flex with draw power and removal of this guy

DMOC is back! Dark Magician of Chaos has his own QuickPlay Spell Card to Special Summon him from the Hand, Field, or Graveyard. Then he can get any Spell in your grave back to your hand, but only during the End Phase and only once per turn. I believe that if you get a QuickPlay Spell, you could activate it before the end of your turn. Then, any monster this card destroys gets banished. That effect hasn't changed at all. His final effect hasn't changed either. When Dark Magician of Chaos leaves the field, he banishes himself. In short, this monster is still a great boss for Dark Magicians. He gets all the generic Spellcaster support as well. Have fun with your nostalgia deck and Happy Friday!

Dark Magician of Chaos

The return of the original spellcaster god marks a new era that has only scratched the surface. I can’t tell you how surprised I was to see DMOC return right to 3 instead of just 1, even after the modest errata. And that’s because there are a surprising number of cards that can special summon him straight from the deck. Besides the current cards of Dark Renewal, Dedication through Light and Dark, Temperance of Prophesy, Reaper of Prophesy, and Fool of Prophesy, there are other cards coming soon that also allow his summon straight from the deck: Dark Horizon and Ebon Void Magician. And this isn’t to mention cards that will easily summon him from the hand (Magical Dimension, Lemon Magician Girl), grave (Dark Magic Veil, Choco Magician Girl), or even the banished pile (Escape from the Dark Dimension.) There aren’t many monsters that can do that! I just got finished complaining about how overpowered Emergency Teleport was during Wednesday’s review. Straight from the deck is desirable.

The only thing that keeps Dark Magician of Chaos from retaining his dominance of old isn’t his errata, but his lack of consistent ways to restore him from the banished pile. In the days of Dimension Fusion and Return from the Different Dimension, DMOC all but forced himself onto the ban list for a decade simply because his combos were unbeatable. Any card that lets you add multiple spell cards to your hand instantly is just insane. (Spellbook of Judgment anyone?) But now, unless you are running Escape from the Dark Dimension and happen to draw it, once DMOC is gone, he’s gone.

But this won’t last forever. I wholeheartedly believe that the reason old cards are finally getting errata is because those ancient banned cards are still symbols of the game. Summoning Dark Magician of Chaos is a joy. Now, it’s a shame that certain cards were hit too hard (poor Crush Card Virus.) But it appears Konami has learned its lesson, because DMOC and Sangan, among others, will enjoy playing time once again. Their revised effects only balance them. And I’m sure future support will be released that will allow Dark Magician of Chaos to thrive once more. He’s a Dark Magician at heart.
