Landrobe the Rock Vassal - #SR01-EN012

If this card is in your hand: You can target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; you cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, also Special Summon this card, and if you do, change that monster to face-down Defense Position. If this card is Tributed for a Tribute Summon: You can target 1 monster with 800 ATK and 1000 DEF in your Graveyard, except "Landrobe the Rock Vassal"; add it to your hand. You can only use each effect of "Landrobe the Rock Vassal" once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Landrobe the Rock Vassal is another Vassal modeled after a monarch. Much like Granmarg the Rock Monarch, this little guy can turn a face-up monster your opponent has to face-down position. Unlike Granmarg though, Landrobe can Special Summon himself by doing this. Once tributed for a Tribute Summon he can bring a monster matching his ATK/DEF from your graveyard back to your hand.

Turning a monster face-down stops any continuous effects that may be stopping you. Many big monsters have weaker defense, so having another Book of Moon can be helpful in dealing with a larger monster. There are boss monsters that even Landrobe himself can run over once his effect kicks. Flip Xyz monsters that can activate their effects during either turn to prevent them from stopping your plays.

As the week goes on these little guys get better and better. While you can't summon from the Extra Deck when you activate this effect, it may be worth it in a deck outside its recommended use (heavy tribute). Just as good as yesterdays monster.

Normally Level 4 Earth Rock would be great stats for XYZ, but Landrobe the Rock Vassal doesn't play that XYZ game. The searchable stats are those 800 Atk points and 1000 Def points. Squires and Vassals rejoice, there is a rock legend in your midsts!

The reason this card gets a mention above other vassals and squires is that glorious effect. Landrobe's condition to Special Summon itself from the hand is to turn an opponent's face-up monster face-down, then you can't Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of the turn. If that monster can be targeted, it's going down. If Majesty's Fiend or Vanity's Fiend isn't face-up then some monster is going down. So in fact, this card doesn't stop some of the problem face-up monsters that a Monarch deck would want to get rid of. It is an easy out to Fog King which is being sided against Monarch Deck players.

The second effect is more average. If Landrobe is tributed for a Tribute Summon, you can get an 800 Atk / 1000 Def monster from the grave to your hand except Landrobe. Most of the time, you want these Squires/Vassals on the field for more Tribute Summons. The one you want in the Hand is Landrobe. It just misses being necessary while still remaining good.

Score: 3/5

Art: 4/5 Deadpool's line about Superhero poses applies here.
