Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Royal Magical Library

Card Number - MFC-074

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 11.17.03

Effect: Each time you or your opponent activates 1 Spell Card, put 1 Spell Counter on this card (max. 3). You can remove 3 Spell Counters from this card to draw 1 card from your deck.

I'm back for a few cards this week because I really hate a few of these cards. First, it's royal magical library. The chances of this card lasting to see 3 magic cards is pretty slim, and it's almost impossible to get the effect more than once. It's true purpose is to combo with Gearfried and Eruma, possibly the cheapest combo ever, which allows an infinite draw combo. Until Eruma is released, there's no point in really playing this card unless you're using some sort of magic counter deck.

I'd give this card a 2/5. The effect takes too long to use and the probability that the library will stay alive long enough is slim.

Effect: Each time you or your opponent activates 1 Spell Card, put 1 Spell Counter on this card (max. 3). You can remove 3 Spell Counters from this card to draw 1 card from your deck.

Pros:
Searchable via Sangan, Shining Angel and Last Will
Draw Power
2000 DEF

Cons:
Big fat 0 ATK
The (max 3) thing
2000 DEF doesn't last too long these days

Combos:
MoP+CoS - CoS makes it 2500 DEF and MoP stops 1500+ ATK from attacking.
Gearfreed+Eruma - Infinite drawing power
Gather Your Mind - Helps speed up Spell Counters
Pitch-Black Power Stone - " "

Notes:
OK, we have the Royal Magical Library today to start off this "Week Of The Spell Counters". At the moment this card isn't too usable, but as soon as Eruma - Dagger Of Butterflies comes out in Dark Crisis there is an evil infinite draw combo that may see a bit of play. Right now the big fat 0 ATK is the big turn off for this card, that and it's not all that easy to keep Library on the field long enough to get some good usage out of it. 2000 DEF can hold off Spear Dragons, Gemini Elfs and the like, but any Monsters 2050 ATK or stronger or packing an Equip Spell can make all the books in this library unable to be checked out or read for that matter. Sure you could throw an Equip Spell on it or use Chorus Of Sanctuary to help it fend for it's life but MSTs eat away at anything you can use for protecting these days.

Drawing cards is a key factor in this game but this card really won't do too well just thrown into any deck without some planning. It can greatly help out Exodia Decks, which should start picking back up a little with Necros coming out next set, but it still isn't powerful enough to be a highly played or liked card, at least yet. As soon as Eruma comes out I'm sure a few people out there will be trying out the Gearfreed combo but that alone probably won't last long and we'll all move on to the next card drawing cards, like Sixth Sense!

Ratings:
Casual: 2.5
Tourney: 1.5
ArtWork: 2.0 - I sure would like to have a library like this, but I'm also sure we don't have the technology to make magical moving ladders/podiums/or whatever those green nebula looking things are holding up.

Here's one of the better stalling cards available. Royal Magical Library will stop lots of monsters with its 2000 DEF and has a nice bonus of being able to let you get extra draws as it gathers up Spell Counters. This is a decent monster by itself but gets extremely useful in the next set when Dagger of Butterflies -Eruma (or whatever it gets renamed to) is released. There's a much touted Gearfried the Iron Knight + Dagger of Butterflies + Royal Magical Library combo. Basically, it allows you to generate an infinite number of Spell Counters, thus getting you an infinite number of draws. What does this mean? Instant Exodia win. Even outside of an Exodia deck, a few extra draws can win you the duel.

Unfortunately, this monster has 0 ATK so you're not likely to try summoning this in Attack Position since it needs to be face-up to get the Spell Counter unless you have Waboku or something similar to protect it. Of course, you can try Special Summoning it from the Graveyard, with Shining Angel (when your opponent's last monster attacks), or with Marauding Captain's effect.

This is a nice monster that's part of a broken combo. It works well in any stall deck but is most effective in an Exodia deck.

Upsides:
Shining Angel-able and Sangan-able
Draw Power
Good Combo with Gearfried the Iron Knight and Eruma
2000 DEF

Down Sides:
0 ATK
Needs 3 Counters
easily beaten and destroyed
has to be face up for effect to work
Eruma isn’t out yet

For those of you who don’t know about Eruma, it basically returns to your hand after it’s destroyed (destroyed being the key word). Equip Eruma to gearfried while RML is face up and just keep doping it and drawing cards every 3 times you do this. This will easily make Exodia a contender again.

In Casual, This card is a good addition to any fun deck. I play it in a fun deck I built and it is great. Draw power is always a plus.

In Tourney, this card won’t see play until Eruma comes out. For now, this card is only decent. When Eruma comes out, it will become increasingly better. Right now, if it comes out, it will be easily destroyed or removed from the field.

In Sealed, Play it. Draw power is always a plus. I played it and it works with any starter deck, but I have yet to try it in a sealed deck tourney (I'm waiting though).

Overall, I give it a 2.3/10

Casual Rating: 3.5

Pros:
+2000 Def
+Interesting Effect
+Instant win combo soon available

Cons:
-0 Attack o_O!!
-Effect not so…effective
-Waste of deck space

Combos:
*The infamous instant-win for Exodia, which if you didn’t know, involves Royal Magical Library and Gearfried the Iron Knight being on the field at the same time, and having Eruma (Dagger of Butterflies) in your hand. This is highly anticipated, etc…

This card is alright, I guess. I’ve actually considered playing it in a tournament deck to try and get more speed, but the fact is, you have to waste the turn to summon it (you won’t put a 0 attack monster in face up attack position), and then AFTER it is attacked it is flipped after which you FINALLY start counting the spells used towards counters. Kinda pointless, including at 3 spells you ONLY get to draw one card. You had to waste one in summoning this in the first place, not to mention you had to go defensive for a turn. But I don’t know, 2000 is solid for defense, and that’s all this card really has going for it. =\

In limited, this card is a little better. There are still much more useful choices to pick, but a 2000 def wall, if only that, is a good idea. You can consider the effect as a Bonus…one that you may never get to use, but still an option.

Basically, this card isn’t worth it. IMO it’s not one of the better uses of the 40 slots in my deck.

Pros:
-Can be used, because half people's decks are magic.
-2000 Defense
-LvL 4
-Draw Power

Cons:
-Monster Removal owns this
-No attack

Reasons for pros: Since people play 17-22 magics in a 40 card deck, this card will receive magic counters up the butt. So, it will be fairly easy to draw a card from your deck. Also, with 2000 defense it won't die to most 4 star monsters. TCGS are all about draw, any card that can give you hand advantage is decent. There isn't really much else to say. It can be used, but not until one card comes out.

Reasons For Cons: Monster removal of course owns this...=/ and the whole no attack thing isn't good, so somehow if this thing is left in attack mode, than well...it's dead.

Combos:

An equip card that once its destroyed it goes back to the owners hand (forgot the name) + Royal Magical Library + Gearfried the Iron Knight + Exodia: Basically you get this card out on the field with gearfried. Get the card mentioned above, keep playing it, and drawing your whole deck, and you get exodia...gg

Tourney 1/5: Its not really that good, it can be used, but only in a defensive deck, and when your trying to stall, do you really want to draw cards? Wait until that equip card comes out.

Casual Play: 3/5: Its average here, not great, not good.

Limited Play: 2/5: Magics aren't as common as constructed play, so this wasn't that great.

Artwork: I haven't exactly seen this card, so I can't really rate it, but I am assuming its a library, and library's just aren't on the high end of the coolness spectrum.
