There are a couple of “X spell plus” cards from recent years which drew a raised eyebrow from me, particularly in green. Primal Might was a particularly heavy-handed one, as it often adds up to clearing the path to attack with your newly giant creature, in a style that feels like a gnome-trick compared to green’s usual effects. I don’t think Tyvar’s Stand is quite as devastating, but it’s equally good early in the game and in the late turns where you can invest a dragon-greed of mana. It’ll always be effective at turning raven-trades into victory tales, and turning normal attacks into overwhelming assaults. Remember, vikings fight smart, and don’t necessarily fight fair; it’s fun to get a green card that lets you break out a little one-eyed cunning.

Constructed: 3.5 (it’s not your standard hexproof combat trick when it can act like a green Fireball)
Casual: 3.5

From a non-gameplay standpoint, Tyvar’s Stand is very fitting for a period when Magic is trying to do actual season-turning skald-work. This particular blood feud goes all the way back to the beginning of our current Phyrexia arc in Kaldheim, and it’s cool to see it get an actual resolution.

At least Tibalt’s ending is on-screen this time, right?

Tyvar’s Stand is a cheap combat trick with a surprising amount of flexibility, turning a block into a blowout and doing solid things on offense and defense. One green mana to grant hexproof and trample is fair, but if you need a bit more pop, you can easily do that with this card. It’s not flashy or extremely efficient, but it is decently versatile, and the combination of abilities at the affordable rate might be exactly what you need in a pinch.

Constructed: 3.75
Casual: 4.25
Limited: 3.75 (might turn a game into a massive blowout if you hit the right thing)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.25
