Throwback Thursday in a week based around non-Effect monsters makes sense to review a card that works with non-Effect monsters, so here’s Rescue Rabbit.

Rescue Rabbit is a Level 4 EARTH Beast with 300 ATK and 100 DEF. Laughable stats on a Level 4, though you won’t keep this on the field probably, but being EARTH and Beast is something I’m fine with. You cannot Special Summon this from the deck, so that limits the abuse of this card somewhat, which is fine. You can banish this face-up card you control to Special Summon 2 Level 4 or lower Normal Monsters with the same name from the deck, but destroy them during the End Phase of the turn. The destruction won’t matter since you’ll probably use the monsters as material for a summon. This was once limited in the Xyz era because it helped bring out the Evolzar Xyzs with relative ease since there were some pretty good vanilla Dinosaurs at the time, but it can also help get specific monsters out to help summon Xyz monsters with more specific requirements like some with 2 WIND monsters, 2 Beast-Warrior monsters, etc. as some examples. You also get Link fodder, which this can be useful in Gladiator Beast to summon Andal and use their Link Monsters instead of using certain effect monsters in that deck as material. Rescue Rabbit’s effect is a hard once per turn to make it more fair, but it helps open the door for some interesting plays, despite summoning only Normal monsters. It’s a great card that I’m sure players can find ways to use and abuse, just hope you don’t draw said Normal Monsters, especially 2 copies of it.

Throwback Thursday brings us to Rescue Rabbit.  This card has had three prior reviews:

The first review was upon release.  The second was in our top cards of the year 2011 (clocking in at #4) a mere two weeks later.  And finally in late 2013, and received favorable scores in each instance.  Rescue Rabbit and its synergy with Normals makes it a lovely option/addition for a Tenyi player.  Lots of Extra Deck possibilities with two free Level 4 (or lower) Normal Monsters from your Deck for free.

Anytime you can get two free Monsters (simply by removing this card) that’s a +1 for you, likely leading to a break even, as (again) you’ll be making an Extra Deck play.  Or tributing one or both of the Monsters, using them for another various combo, or even just to bring out a Tenyi Monster, as well as assisting in swarming.  Rescue Rabbit may not be the terror it once was back in the XYZ hey day, but it’s still powerful.

This guy can’t be Special Summoned from the Deck, and I feel that’s appropriate, as one Special Summon like that leading to two others in the same turn wouldn’t be particularly fair.  If you play enough Normals, in or out of the Tenyi theme, Rescue Rabbit can still be an ally to help you accomplish a variety of tasks.  I’d limit myself to 1 or 2 though.  I think 3 would be overkill, and could lead to dead Draws.

Rating:  4/5

Art:  4/5 too.  The rabbit, while cute, is a bit odd looking.  It’s no Rescue Cat (which in the words of fellow reviewer years ago) “It’s a OTK and it’s FUZZY WUZZY ADORABLE.” but more on that another day I suppose.  Nice background here too, simple but fun colors.

We would love more volunteers to help us with our YuGiOh Card of the Day reviews.  If you want to share your ideas on cards with other fans, feel free to drop us an email.  We’d be happy to link back to your blog / YouTube Channel / etc.   😉
