After so many years, Magician of Black Chaos finally gets a retrain as an Effect Monster, Magician of Black Chaos MAX.

Black Chaos MAX is a Level 8 DARK Spellcaster Ritual with 2800 ATK and 2600 DEF. Pretty good stats for the Level, DARK and Spellcaster are great things as well. The Ritual Spell in question for this Ritual is Chaos Form, I just kinda wish it wasn’t Level 8 so you could only need 1 Dark Magician to summon it, but I guess Level 8 is fine so you can use Magician’s Rod and any of the Level 6s the deck runs. You also got Advanced Ritual Art, just need vanillas who add to Level 8. If this card is Special Summoned (not necessarily Ritual Summon) you can tribute a monster to prevent the opponent from activating monster effects this turn. Nice effect to have in combination with the Impcantations, and it’s fair to ask for a Tribute for that effect, even on a Ritual Monster because it’s very good and could be asking for more trouble if you got it for free off the Special Summon in any way. When this card destroys an opponent’s monster in battle, you can target a Spell in the graveyard and add it to your hand. I could list all day how many good Spells there are that you can grab back, not including banned ones because the obvious fact of them being banned. It’s an easy way to get Spells back to continue plays or keep control of the game, and I always appreciate free cards for minimal effort. Magician of Black Chaos MAX is a great upgrade to the original Magician of Black Chaos, though that’s easy to do considering the original had no real effect, so it’s about worth running similar to Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon, though this card’s home in Dark Magician could feel more odd, but you could always just build a deck around all the Chaos Form related Rituals.

Advanced Rating: 4/5

Art: 5/5 Not just an upgrade in what it does, but the art as well.

I remember (last spring maybe) I tried to throw this card in a week I proposed, and we just couldn’t do it, so I’m super happy we’re closing the week with Magician of Black Chaos MAX. Level 8, Spellcaster, Dark, 2800 attack (2600 defense) should all sound familiar, and a Ritual who can be Special Summoned with Chaos Form (as well as Advanced Ritual Art) so Dark Magician can be in play with that.

If Special Summoned, Tributing a Monster prevents your opponent from using Monster effects for the turn.  I wish this were a Quick Effect, but alas, this remains rather neutralizing.  So long as you have a Monster to Tribute.  And, you can recycle a Magic card from your Graveyard back to your Hand, which is just awesomeness, when this guy destroys a Monster.

You can use both effects in the same turn, and multiple times in additional turns, so I like both of those things a lot.  Though the fact this guy has an effect at all is already an improvement over the original DMoC (although this one didn’t help Yugi beat Pegasus).  Both effects here are GOOD without being broken, and actually help produce a solid Ritual Monster imo.

Art:  5/5  I always find it weird to see Spellcasters with Swords (as freaking badass as that one is) but this pic is very Halloween appropriate too.  The Moon there is amazing, I love the black void and darkness, as well as the armor, the hair, the strands off the costume, the dark pants in the bit of light in the moon…so much love for this
