This card’s effect is arguably more powerful in a vacuum than Adventures in the Forgotten Realms‘ adult Displacer Beast, but I think of it more as the creature hasn’t yet learned to be disciplined about its abilities (because it’s a kitten). Regardless of the explanation, the power is definitely exploitable – even the “innocuous” uses like getting creatures out from under enemy auras are dangerous when they’re basically a free bonus on top of what your spells’ usual effects are. It can also reset planeswalkers if you’ve had to use their loyalty-reducing abilities a few times, and I haven’t even mentioned all the comes-into-play shenanigans; this might be one of the best enablers for that style of play since Deadeye Navigator.

Blink effects always carry the risk of being very dangerous, and Displacer Kitten combines a cuddly exterior with a reusable blink effect. While you can’t blink away lands with it, you can blink other things, and there are always ways to turn the harmless-looking beast into a massive combo engine by blinking artifact mana rocks and just chaining together spells into a massive menace. While it is both small and a bit pricey, seeing as how it would be kinda busted if it were cheaper, I think that’s a fair price to pay. Displacer Kitten is definitely a bit of a finesse-based card, but there are always ways to make it work, be it by using timely spells to protect your things, resetting combo pieces, or just abusing rude comes-into-play triggers.

Constructed: 2 (four mana hurts it a lot, but it has combo potential that might be able to be tapped into at some point)
Casual: 5 (look at the cute little kitty awww)
Limited: 3.5 (not as easy to abuse as other things, but this Limited is the perfect place to try some daring tricks that might be too slow in other Limited formats)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 4
