Awakening of the Crystal Ultimates – #SDCB-EN016

Reveal 1 “Ultimate Crystal” monster in your hand, then activate 1 of these effects. If you control an “Ultimate Crystal” monster, you can activate 1 or 2 of these effects in sequence, instead (and do not have to reveal a monster).
● Take 1 “Rainbow Bridge” card or 1 “Rainbow Refraction” from your Deck, and either add it to your hand or send it to the GY.  ● Special Summon 1 “Crystal Beast” Monster Card from your hand, Deck, GY, or Spell & Trap Zone.
You can only activate 1 “Awakening of the Crystal Ultimates” per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Awakening of the Crystal Ultimates starts our Crystal Beast week on Pojo, as well as wraps up the month of November.

Quick-Play Spell, first in the archetpye’s history I believe. You need an “Ultimate Crystal” monster either on the field or in your hand for this card to be played. If you have one on the field you don’t have to reveal any “Ultimate Crystal” monster in your hand, as well as activate both effects instead of just one. You have three “Ultimate Crystal” monsters you are likely playing (Rainbow Dark Dragon the exception): Rainbow Dragon, Ultimate Crystal Rainbow Dragon Overdrive (the new Fusion) or Rainbow Overdragon (the old Fusion), so a situational Quick-Play.

Search a “Rainbow Bridge” card or a “Rainbow Refraction” from the Deck and either add it or send it to the grave. Rainbow Bridge of Salvation is the one card that benefits from being in the grave, allowing you to banish it for a Field Spell and Crystal Beast search. Anything else would work best adding them to your hand.

You could also choose to Special Summon 1 “Crystal Beast” Monster Card from your hand, Deck, GY, or Spell & Trap Zone. Sapphire Pegasus and Ruby Carbuncle come to mind to either get you a resource or swarm from your Sepll/Trap Zone if you have them loaded with other Crystal Beast monsters.

Either effect is good. The Special Summon ability gets you a body on board at the very least, with a swarm from Ruby Carbuncle at best. The search can help set up biggers plays like with Rainbow Bridge of the Heart getting you another Normal Summon for Crystal Beasts, and then a 1-for-1 Crystal Spell/Trap search, and it’ll only cost you a Crystal Beast in your hand or on the field (including Spell/Trap Zone). If only it didn’t need to have the biggest monsters in the archetype to be on the field to activate.

New Crystal Beast cards this week to review as we recently got a Structure Deck, so we start with one of the new Spells for the archetype: Awakening of the Crystal Ultimates.

Awakening of the Crystal Ultimates is a Quick-Play Spell that makes you reveal an Ultimate Crystal monster in your hand to activate 1 of 2 effects, or if you already control an Ultimate Crystal monster you get to use both effects in sequence. The first effect lets you take a Rainbow Bridge card or a Rainbow Refraction from your Deck and either add it to your hand or send it to the graveyard. This is likely being used for the Rainbow Bridges, where you’d want to search the original Rainbow Bridge or Rainbow Bridge of the Heart, otherwise you send Rainbow Bridge of Salvation for its graveyard effect. The second effect would let you summon a Crystal Beast from your hand, Deck, graveyard, or Spell/Trap Zone, which is great to get to Sapphire Pegasus to get to another Crystal Beast name by putting it in the Spell & Trap Zone. Both effects are solid, especially if you can get an Ultimate Crystal monster on board to use both. Hard once per turn, but that’s fair. It’s worth running for the consistency, especially since Crystal Beast Rainbow Dragon will ensure you’re likely running the original Rainbow Dragon anyways.

Art: 5/5 Rainbow Dragon ascending over Duel Academy looks so pretty.

I’m back from some much needed R&R, and it looks like I picked a good week to come back for, as we look at some new Crystal Beast support.  We kick this week off with Awakening of the Crystal Ultimates, a Quickplay Magic.  You reveal an Ultimate Crystal from your Hand and activate one of two Effects.  However, if you control an Ultimate Crystal, you get to activate both Effects in succession.  So that’s a bonus.  The first Effect nets you any Crystal Magic or Trap from your Deck to your Hand via the Bridge.  While the second nets you a swarm of Crystal Beasts from your Deck as long as you control an originally named Rainbow or Rainbow Dark Dragon activated their Effect(s).  Both have practical applications and can be used in varying circumstances.  The latter Effect on this card lets you Special Summon a Theme Monster from your Hand, Deck, Grave, or M/T Zone.  This card is (assuming you have to do the reveal) a 1.5-for-1.  I’m counting the reveal as a half even if it isn’t technically a cost.  But if you don’t reveal, you’re at least breaking even, and then likely some as you’re bound to get something advantageous off whatever Monster you Special Summoned.  Being Quickplay only makes this better to drop another Monster to the Field.  It has practical uses both offensive and defensive.

Rating:  3.75/5

Art:  3.75/5 also…nice color scheme, appropriate wakening of the Dragon, just a bit lacking for me.
