Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Archfiend Empress
#STBL-ENSP1

If (exactly) 1 face-up DARK Fiend-Type monster on the field, except this card, would be destroyed, you can remove from play 1 DARK Fiend-Type monster from your Graveyard, instead. When this card is destroyed and sent from the field to the Graveyard, you can select 1 Level 6 or higher DARK Fiend-Type monster in your Graveyard, except "Archfiend Empress", and Special Summon it.

Dark Paladin

Tuesday

An Archfiend that could be playable? Well let's see just how playable this card is, or is not. To start, we have an Archfiend that doesn't require a Lifepoint cost every turn. Level 8 requires two tributes, so is this card going to warrant such a sacrifice? 2900 attack is great, 2100 defense is decent, Dark and Fiend are good, Level 8 is workable.

Now, if a face-up Dark Fiend-type monster would be destroyed, other than this card, you can remove from play a Dark Fiend-type monster from your Graveyard instead. Reasonable protection for most Fiends, other than herself, that doesn't exactly seem like how an Empress should be treated, does it?

Finally, when this card is destroyed, and sent from the Field to the Graveayrd, you can select a Dark Fiend-type monster of Level 6 or greater, and Special Summon it. But the catch here, is that again, while she can't protect herself with her effect, not can she Special Summon herself with it. If I were playing a hardcore and dedicated Fiend Deck, I might at least try her. Despite being an Archfiend, I wouldn't play her there...

Archfiend Empress ...

I said it before, and I’ll say it again. Freeza loves Fiends, so I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a little biased. It’s nice that they are giving my favorite monster type some support, outside from the Infernities (ha! Remember those?) and Fabled. Now if they could only reinvest in Dark World …

Ok, anyways – I like the Archfiend Empress. The only thing is I feel she’s a little late to the game. She’d have made a great deck boss a couple years back, when her 2900 could have been put to devastating use. Nowadays, even WITH the high attacking monsters, all the quick little trick plays, boosts, side steps and whatnot is what will win it for u. Not sheer might.

That being said – 2900 is still a lot of punch that shouldn’t be taken lightly. She’s Dark and Fiend – both excellent things. And there is no restriction on her summoning, aside from not being able to special summoned with her own effect. She can protect ANOTHER Dark Fiend from being destroyed by removing a Dark Fiend, instead, from your graveyard. … This is somewhat questionable. Especially since it has to be exactly 1 Dark Fiend being popped (so no protection from Dark Hole … sorry), and often u kinda like some fiends floating in your graveyard … Dark Necrofear fuel, other resurrection plays, etc. … and particularly when it comes to the Empress’s second effect. Once destroyed, by any means and sent to the graveyard, u can special summon a level 6 or higher Dark Fiend from your grave.

That is the trump effect and what makes the Empress worth playing. But the deal is u have be playing a fair number of high level Dark Fiends in the first place to make that effect worthwhile … and obviously she’ll only shine in a pure Fiend Deck. That being said – she’s worth taking for a spin.

Archfiend Empress is, without a doubt, the lamest Sneak promo this game has ever seen since that Hidden Soldiers card and Justi-Break. At least Toon Dark Magician Girl is Dark Magician Girl.

You can read through its effect all you want, but you won't find much. To protect a Dark Fiend from any kind of destruction, remove a Dark Fiend from your graveyard. When she dies, you can revive a high-level Dark Fiend, but not another Empress. And that's it. She has no self-summoning effect. You don't want to use a two-tribute monster that can't summon itself. Being a Fiend, she has plenty of support, but no support that's going to help her. Being an Archfiend does nothing, either. As we all know, Archfiends suck.

So, what was Konami doing giving us this for the promo instead of a Scrap or Karakuri, or a Synchro Tuner? Who knows. Archfiend Empress, if anything, is doomed by her type and total lack of the support she needs. No, I'm not going to make some pun about how Archfiend Empress fails because she has no people to support her.

Art: Bleh.
Fun Fact: The person next to me pulled this at the Sneak and was very angry.
Tomorrow: I think at least one R was turned into an L during translation.

Pheano

Hey Pojo, Pheano here with another Card Of The Day For you.

Today we will be taking a look at one of the new cards from Starstrike Blast, Archfiend Empress. Archfiend Empress is a Level eight Dark Fiend with twenty-nine hundred Attack and twenty-one hundred Defense. If you control exactly one other Dark Fiend type monster your can stop it from being destroyed by removing from play one Dark Fiend Monster in your Graveyard. Also when this card is destroyed and sent from the field to the Graveyard you can Special Summon a Level six or higher Dark Fiend Monster other than Archfiend Empress from your Graveyard.

Where do I even begin, this card is so bad. Ok first let’s talk about the type of deck it would be used in. Obviously this would be used in a Dark Fiend deck and those are almost nonexistent. The only Dark Fiend deck I can think of that is any good would be Dark Worlds and they aren’t very good anymore since all they are now are just beat sticks and now a days random beat sticks aren’t very impressive. Next off is being able to get this out, it’s a double tribute monster and the only deck that can really support those is Frogs and this doesn’t have any synergy with that deck. Again Dark Worlds can muster up the tributes but its counter productive to their strategy since they want to swarm and now your reducing the swarm for this card. Then you have the conditions to properly use this card. First of all you need to have one other Dark Fiend to use this meaning you needed to have three monsters on the board to use this and that’s just not practical, I would rather just summon Obelisk The Tormentor. Second you need to have a number of Dark Fiends to use to remove from play for this cards Effect which is what makes it so this can only be played in a Dark Fiend deck. Again the only deck you could really load the grave up with Dark Fiends would be Dark Worlds but for the most part you want them to stay in the grave so you can use cards like Pot Of Avarice on them. And then the final effect to bring back a monster is to specific, Dark Worlds can’t even use this effect unless they play Reign-Beaux, Overlord Of Dark World but they never do so that means they can’t bring anything back with it. In short there is really only one deck that can support this at all and its fairly counter productive to their strategy since it cuts down on their swarm, it will kill their Graveyard and forces them to play cards they normally wouldn’t.

In the Traditional Format no one will care if you have this out and that being said this is far to hard to get out in a format where odd are you will only get one turn. There is really no practical way to get this out in one turn, with another monster and with enough food for it in the Graveyard. And even if you do get this out they play so much mass removal that this will get destroyed so fast since it doesn’t protect itself only the other monster. Also this can’t be used to really support and decks played in their metagame.

Bottom line:
This card is just bad.

The Legion

In keeping with this week's theme of cards from Starstrike Blast, is the card some of you may actually already have if you went to the sneak peek. Of course I'm talking about Demon Empress.

*Is brutally tackled by two guys from Konami's (or whoever censors Yu-gi-oh these days) Censoring Department and beaten to a pulp, then left to finish this flipping article*

Sorry, I meant Archfiend Empress. Anyway, Archfiend Empress is a dark, fiend type, 8 star with not too shabby stats of 2900/2100. It's effect is not bad, but not that effective either. If one, and only one (you shall not count to 4, and 5 is right out) face-up, dark, fiend-type monster would be destroyed, you can remove one dark, fiend-type monster in your grave from play instead. And when this card is sent to the graveyard, you can select one level 6 or higher, dark, fiend-type monster (except this card, of course) and special summon it. Sounds pretty good, huh? Except for the part I left out, where it says: if one face-up fiend type monster would be destroyed, except this card, you can remove…yadayada. So you have to have two monsters on the field, a certain kind of monster in the grave, and pray that your opponent will pick on the monster that's not Archfiend Empress to destroy. And then your opponent plays the newly unbanned Dark Hole… oops.

Aside from that, it gets some advantage from being a Demo- sorry, Archfiend, and benefiting from all that support in that archetype. Unfortunately that's not much. And so, while it could very well be a devastating force if you can get it out and use it, I don't think the end is really worth the means.

Traditional: Eh.. 2.5 (Could be used in Chaos) [Why does it all have to be used in Chaos? I mean, seriously.]
