Todays card up for review is Just Deserts. Man, blast from the past. Sadly, the game is way too advanced now for cards like this to be remotely good. I really do miss the good old days where you could use burn cards as tech, or even use chain burn and being able to win, but those days are long gone. Now, this card is only good in Chain burn, and that deck isn’t playable right now with all the crap going around. It may be better in the future, we shall see

Just Desserts …

Ah, the next card in the “oldie-but-goodie” week. What can I say? It’s excellent if and ONLY if u are playing a burn deck. 500 points of damage for every monster your opponent has on the field? Terrific. Meaning u can crack them in the nose with potentially 2500 points of direct damage. Plus its chainable, which is always a plus. And u can run it in 3’s if u so choose. Swarming is all the rage with the best decks these days, so u should have plenty of opportunities to dish out big hits with this Meat-eating Monkey. It’s downsides? – well a Royal Decree, a LADD, or a Jinzo will take the fun out of this card with the quickness. Added to that that few people even run burn anymore because of its relative slowness, and u can understand why u don’t see it much anymore. But for a Burn deck – the only deck u should really ever play it in – it’s a “must have”.

Just Desserts is a Normal Trap that has been with the American game since the beginning, introduced in the Kaiba Starter deck.  It has always been a solid method for delivering burn damage, and even managed an appearance in the Duelist Kingdom story arc that introduced so many of us to Yu-Gi-Oh.  I chose this card purely for a fun birthday review.  I bear more than a passing resemblance to the art, especially raiding the fridge of holiday leftovers.

The good news for Just Desserts is that we are in a format full of Special Summons.  The bad news is the same Special Summons that will feed Just Desserts are apt to be preceded by a backfield clearing card.  Even if your opponent fails to destroy this before filling the field, you either have to finish them or be able to survive their assault.  So the end result is a skilled opponent won’t give up a lot of damage to Just Desserts: in fact you’re mostly just going to use this to bluff and/or bait out other removal, breaking even in card count with the small bonus of 500 to 1000 points of burn damage.  A deck will be doing good to make room for a single burn card as an insurance policy, and if they do that… they might as well use Ceasefire (flips Set Monsters if there are any, and then does 500 for each Effect Monster in play) which can be used with your own offensive push.

At its core, Just Desserts is a nice, balanced card.  Incompetent play leads to a wasted copy.  Intelligent play allows you to burn the opponent while making them waste removal in general, and a focused design results in a significant amount of burn.  Too bad the game has no place for it; the resources required to optimize the burn slows the deck down too much.

Surprised it scored so high?  Like I said, it’s a card that gets crowded out; it really can win you the duel, after all.

Just Desserts:

Wow.  I haven't thought about this card in so long...  I guess that's because burn has been dead for quite some time.  Now I'm not saying burn decks are impossible, just that not many people are using them.  Not to mention there is a ton of anti burn tech available now, so if burn ever did make a comeback, it would end quickly I.M.O.  But onto the card... Just Desserts used to be really fun when ojama trio was at 3.  You were hitting them for 2000 usually, which is not bad for a two card combo that clutters the field.  There are other combos with this card to be sure, but I think it's important to look at the tech aspect of this card for this format.  Swarming is all the rage now, it is not uncommon for your opponent to drop 3 monsters in a turn (of course usually they are killing you when this happens).  So that's 1500 damage if you have this set.  True I'd much rather have Torrential or something, but if you were going for that last little bit of damage... this could seal the deal.

Happy New Year everyone!
