Dark Paladin
Tuesday

All right, it's Magic card week for the rest of the week, and we have a Normal Magic, an Equip, a Quick Play, and a Continuous. Today is Fighting Spirit, the equip, which is a handy rare card from the Duelist Genesis.

The equipped monster gains 300 attack, which is a marginal increase, but if the equipped monster would be destroyed by Battle, you can destroy this card instead. It's a neat idea, but it probably isn't worth a Deck spot.

Fighting Spirit

There are two effects here, one sub-par and one mediocre. Gaining 300 ATK for each monster your opponent has is usually negligible; I tend to think something like Burden of the Mighty would be more useful for that kind of attack power manipulation. Shunting destruction away from the monster to itself if the monster would die in battle is somewhat useful...it would be moreso if monsters actually destroyed each other in battle more often than it's done with card effects.

I don't see any room in any competitive deck for this card right now.

General Zorpa Fighting Spirit

I am gonna say this, they never get tired of printing ATK increasing Equip spells. This one increases the ATK of the monster by 300 for each of your opponent's monsters, which is quite weak. Even Axe of Despair will give you 1000 every time. You don't see equip spells in the game because they aren't really practical, unless you are talking about Mage Power or United We Stand and they don't really see play anywhere but in Japan because of Arms Hole.

It does protect the monster in battle by destroying itself instead fo the monster, but that has already been made in Mist Body, Gladiator Beasts Battle Archfiend Shield and Gladiator Beast Battle Manica. Thos cards never see the light of day, so this effect is not so good too.

So, this card has a bad effect, even for the bad type of card that it already is...

I think this is the first equip spell I've taken a good look at in a long time. They are generally very weak or unusable with rare exceptions like Premature Burial and Snatch Steal. This card is not one of those exceptions. Being an equip makes it a potential dead draw, only 300 per monster your opponent controls is sub par at best and being destroyed instead of the monster being destroyed by battle isn't all that useful, especially right now.

I can almost see thing being played in Ben Kei OTK. Maybe, just maybe, someday in the future, it'll see play beyond casual but for now, it'll probably just sit in your binder/shoebox/garbage can.

The monster will become 300, 600, 900, 1200, or 1500 ATK stronger. If the monster is somehow going to be destroyed by battle and not by an effect you can save the monster by destroying this card instead. I would rather play United We Stand for 800 ATK boost plus my own monsters. Fighting Spirit is a card that gets worse when you do better. Since most things are destroyed by effects the secondary effect won't help out. There are better cards out there and they have been out since the start of the game, some of these cards are just filler cards.

Pwii Well, hopefully my new manga 'surviving high school' is up and running at survivinghighschool.smackjeeves.com now. The url. might be subject to change though...

fighting spirit is not that great an attack booster. We have united we stand, mage power, and even axe of despair. The real beauty of this card is it's destroyed easily. Confused? Here's a senario:

p1 has monarch out along with treeborn

p2 summons andos and equips fighting spirit

p2 destroys monarch.

now p1 could just use a s/t to destroy spirit and sac treeborn for another monarch, but instead destroys it by battle with thestalos, keeping their resources. This lets you manipulate your opponent real nicely.

Todayʼs card up for review is Fighting Spirit. I suppose the monster you equip this to would be gigantic if your playing against a tele-dad deck. I see no other point to use this card, nor are attack gaining cards ever used besides honest.
