Dark Paladin

Wednesday

Synchro Week continues with Red Dragon Archfiend, who is a Dark Synchro monster, and is Level 8, and appropriate again, a Dragon, with 3000 atk (very nice) and 2000 def (could be worse I suppose).

Now, Red Dragon Archfiend is Synchro Summoned with one Tuner monster and one or more non-Tuner monsters.  If this card attacks a defense position monster your opponent controls, destroy all defense position monsters your opponent controls after Damage Calculation.

During your End Phase, destroy all other monsters you control that did not declare an attack this turn.  While negative, that effect probably isn't going to hurt you, more often than not.  Ideally, you would be able to control what, if any, monsters you would have that would or would not be destroyed.

I don't see it as being too big of a problem.  With 3000 attack, your opponent is probably playing in defense by now anyway.  Destroy the monsters yourself, or allow this card to do it for you.

Red Dragon Archfiend

...what Stardust is for control, Red Dragon is for brute power.

Same requirements as Stardust to summon, 8 stars worth of Synchro material, which is easy enough to pull off.  Attaching that to a 3,000 ATK body is incredible, as well as the ability to destroy all of your opponent's defenders, clearing the way for your other monsters to attack.  He's great at punching through a clogged field, where your opponent might have several defense-position monsters and otherwise be able to hold you off for a few turns until they draw what they need.

Again, no reason not to play it, it's worth taking up 1, if not 2 of your Extra Deck slots.

5/5
General Zorpa Red Dragon Archfiend

The second of the 5 Dragons form 5D's, this guy packs some major punch. 3000 ATK and 2000 DEF are great on a level 8, tying with Heraklinos and crush almost everybody else. It is of the same level as Stardust, so I often come into conflict about whether I want ATK or negations, especially against Gladiator Beasts.

The effect is great, as when he attacks a facedown monster, you nuke all other facedown monsters, which can be very useful. This works especially well against stall decks and burn decks, as they play a lot of defense position monsters for your Dragon to blast. Even Monarch decks will be holding onto their copies of Gravekeepers and Spirit Reaper, as the Dragon turns these otherwise great cards into heaps of molten cardboard.

The downside of this card, is that he nukes our own field as well. Well, unless they attack. That means that a simple Threatening Roar can turn what would have been a game-winning swing into a game-losing nuke your own field play. This is why this guy is getting outplayed by Thought Ruler Archfiend, who has a very useful life gain ability and a negation effect. Personally, if you can attack with it, your opponent will be taking heavy hits, but only when you have them on the ropes already.

Todayʼs card up for review is Red Dragon Archfiend, yet another wrecking ball for the synchro family. Of course he isnʼt as devastating as other synchros. Since you can use 15 cards in your extra deck, why not have a copy of him in there for whenever you need an effect like this? You can call him a bomb. He will explode all defense position monster your opponent controls if he battles with a defense position monster on the field.

Only real downside with this guy is that if your opponent plays threatening roar on you, your monsters are now nuked. This is yet another card to get from The Duelist Gensis for sure. He is also available in a tin, so he is not hard to find whatsoever.

Over the pass weekend, I have truly learned just how powerful Red Dragon Archfiend truly is. As of now, it is the most powerful of the Synchro monsters in terms of ATK (save for a pumped up Colossal Fighter). During a match at regionals, this card was able to not over run over and opponent's monster, but take out their defense position monster as well! This guy can provide some crazy advantage and also serves as a counter to Goyo Guardian and Stardust by being able to run them over. The rulings on him are a bit fuzzy to me because I have heard alot of things from alot fo judges about his ability to ignore the abilities of flip effect monsters when it attacks them.

We have another awesome Synchro monster up for review.

Being level 8 makes it easy to Synchro Summon. The most important part of it that I see is that it runs over everything except Gladiator Beast Heraklinos which it can suicide with.

Like I said in the Stardust Dragon review, there's really not much reason to not have this in your Extra Deck. Even if you're not using Tuners yourself, you may as well have it on the off chance that you're Creature Swap'd one. If you are using Tuners, this is a more likely than not a staple in your Extra Deck. I can't imagine it wouldn't be but with the new 15 card limit  for the Extra Deck and new cards coming out, that may change.

Red Dragon Archfiend can be good in many places. If the opponent is going on defense, trying not to take any damage that turn, all of his or her defense mode monsters will be destroy and be left open for a direct attack. The other good situation is of course direct attacks. If you can manage to attack directly with Red Dragon Archfiend, that will be almost half of their life points and since everyone is playing Solemn Judgments nowadays, your opponent may be at 2000 or less life points after a direct attack. Red Dragon Archfiend has a little wearkness against attack mode monsters. The only reason being that people play Honest for Light monsters, Shrink, Waboku and other things to get other effects off.
