Dark Paladin
Wednesday

We continue our week with an interesting monster known as Dragon Ice, who is appropriately a Dragon and a monster of the Water attribute.
Our chilly friend here has a paltry 1800 attack and a fairly solid 2200 defense...but wait, he's level 5, so he requires a tribute. Or does he?

Dragon Ice can be Special Summoned when your opponent Special Summons a monster as long as you discard a card from your hand. That a one for one for you, and a Special Summon is usually a good thing, but 1800 attack?

However, the card states Special Summon, not in any particular mode, so I assume it could be attack or defense mode. How does that become important? 2200 defense is enough to stop a Cyber Dragon, which IS important because of how easily and how often he is Special Summoned.

Dragon Ice could be your answer to a Cyber Dragon, and it's cool that this is a response, so it can obviously be done on your opponent's turn. However...low attack isn't good, and 2200 defense is good for stopping Cyber Dragon, but not 2400 attack powerhouses.

In my opinion, maybe a solid tribute fodder option for Dragon decks, but I don't see it solid enough to take shape in a typical tournament deck.

Ratings:

Traditional: 2/5

Advanced: 3/5

Art: 5/5 Although wings don't necessarily mean Dragon, this seems to look more like a Gargoyle of sorts.

When your opponent Special Summons a monster, you can discard 1 card to Special Summon this card from your hand or Graveyard. There can only be 1 face-up “Dragon Ice” monster on the field.

A Secret Rare from Gladiator’s Assault, Dragon Ice is a Multi-Trigger Effect Monster. Somewhat similar to D.D. Crow, but there is an activation requirement to be met. Please do note that discarding 1 card is a cost, and you can discard Dragon Ice that you are attempting to Special Summon as the cost.

Let’s observe how many cards would meet the requirement:

*Treeborn Frog
*Cyber Dragon
*Premature Burial
*Call of the Haunted
*Swing of Memories
*Destiny Hero – Fear Monger
*Light and Darkness Dragon

Against Treeborn Frog, LaDD, and Fear Monger, this card probably will not be as effective as it is against Cyber Dragon. Both LaDD and Fear Monger will most likely bring back Disk Commander to draw 2 cards and either summon a Monarch or use Phoenix Wing Wind Blast to spin Dragon Ice away. Simply put, this card will be most appreciated when it is used to block attacks with sturdy 2200 DEF.

Cyber Dragon cannot get past Dragon Ice without external help, and you can always use Dragon Ice as a Kuriboh to protect the last remnant of your LP against Premature Burial/Swing of Memories (Demise OTK got a huge boost) or Call of the Haunted during Battle Phase.

Dragon-Type will allow the user to also use Stamping Destruction, not to mention that you could send this as a Fusion Material for Five-Headed Dragon with Future Fusion. Water Attribute will…definitely assist Fenrir. While 1800 ATK cannot even destroy a Breaker with a Spell Counter, it nevertheless is capable of putting up a fight with Elemental Hero Stratos.

Light and Darkness Dragon could actually use this as a Tribute. 1 Destiny LaDD deck used 1 Dragon Ice among Top 16 in last Shonen Jump Championship. This can definitely smooth the two tributes. Also, since Foolish Burial can easily send this card to the Graveyard, barring D.D. Crow, you can possibly discard Treeborn Frog to Special Summon Dragon Ice, bring back Treeborn Frog, and go for Light and Darkness Dragon in one sweeping move.

Use this to gain extra time and cards for conservative decks. Nowadays, Special Summon happens very frequently, so this card will rarely be a dead care. The question is, can you draw it when you need it? Okay, so believe in the heart of the cards…never worked for me. ^_^

Traditional: 2/5 All Chaos monsters can easily run this card over.
Advanced: 3.2/5 Definitely has potential.

Dragon Ice

A very good card. You can send it to the graveyard for it's own effect from your hand, so you can essentially stop their Cyber Dragon in it's tracks. You can also discard a card from your hand to Special Summon it from the graveyard. In a deck like Dragon Heroes or Perfect Circle, the discard can actually be beneficial if you do not have a Phoenix Wing Wind Blast or Destiny Draw handy. It also works well with Skreech and Foolish Burial as it can work well in the graveyard. DD Crow loves to hate on this guy though, but it won't likely happen, as they are more likely to remove Treeborn Frog or Destiny Hero Disc Commander. The most solid of the fan cards for sure, and it's relatively high price is very well deserved.
