Gearfried the Sword Master. Take a moment and admire his artwork.
Okay. Now, this guy is really a very balanced addition to the Freed family. Freed the Brave Wanderer, Freed the Matchless General, Gear Freed the Iron Knight (Although the English name was changed to Gearfried), and now this guy. For the most part, all the ones before either sucked or were very well-balanced. This is probably my favorite Warrior family, just outside of the Mystic Swordsman family.

He's a nomi monster. Meh. He has built-in removal liek wh0a. The Sword Master will die easily with no protection, but turning an Axe of Despair or United We Stand into Tribute to the Doomed is terrific if used even once.

The cost to summon him is reasonable but annoying. You lose one card to get him out and the focus on equip cards changes entirely.

You might just be able to plug him into a Gear Freed control (using stuff like Amazoness Chain Wielder, Blast With Chain, Mind Crush, D.
D. Designator, and Smoke Grenade of the Thief) without negative consequence. Smoke Grenade of the Thief and Blast With Chain already do well with the Iron Knight. Turning them into a Tribute to the Doomed is just happy time. Blast With Chain is great – it becomes a three-purpose card with Sword Master. It destroys a card when it is destroyed, destroys a monster when equipped, and turns Sword Master into even more of a beatstick. It would get even better if we had Kunai With Chain to add into the mix – Increasing his ATK, destroying a monster, and flipping a Goat token into attack position or killing a Berserk Gorilla/Spirit Reaper. This guy turns Snatch Steal into an even MORE g0dly topdeck, though, which is one thing I don't like about him. And I shouldn't mention how rigged he would be if he could be summoned by Premature Burial.

No rating – His own deck or nothing. God, I love being lazy.

ExMinion OfDarkness Gearfried the Swordmaster

Gearfried is an unwieldy yet powerful card.

The bad points: This guy can ONLY come out from Release Restraint -- meaning he relies on a Gearfried on the field and this card being in the hand. In addition, Gearfried the Swordmaster is a "nomi" (only) monster, meaning he can ONLY be summoned this way -- no revival for him!

The good: He's a 2600 ATK special summon that lets you kill something on your opponent's side every time you play an Equip. United We Stand? Gearfried kills something and gets an insane attack boost. Mage Power? Same thing. He gets Snatch Stolen? As far as I can tell, his effect kicks in when the equip is played, but he's not changing sides yet, so the player using Snatch Steal loses a monster.

More bad: Although Swordmaster can be equipped with stuff, the weaker Gearfried can not. A good Swordmaster deck plays more than the normal amount of Equip Spell Cards, and they become useless if all you have on the field is Gearfried. Gearfried the Swordmsaster is a dead draw -- you WANT him staying in your Deck so it can be summoned from there.

This card does need a deck built around it...but it's not gonna be a Tier 1 deck.

1/5 all formats -- it just doesn't do enough for anyone to want to play it.

Gearfried the Swordmaster

Today we’re reviewing Gearfried the Swordmaster, the latest addition (well, first, really) to the Gearfried Family and the card that I think will spark renewed interest in our good friend the Iron Knight.  First off: Yes, this is a nomi monster.  You can ONLY summon it via Release Restraint, but that’s not too bad, is it?  All you need is to have Gearfried the Iron Knight on your side of the field (not hard at all, what with his being a Warrior) and then to tribute it with Release Restraint.

And when you do, you can summon this guy from your hand or deck (making it one of those cards that you, essentially, never want to draw, which can be good or bad…); he boasts a very solid 2600 ATK and a very nice effect.  Equip it with something and you get to kill an opponent’s monster.  Is that Gate Guardian annoying you?  Get out Gearfried the Swordmaster and stick a Smoke Grenade of the Thief (wonderful with Gearfried the Iron Knight, by the way) on it; Gate Guardian is dead.

Equip it with Axe of Despair; now you have a 3600 ATK monster staring down a field one monster emptier.  Equip it with Blast with Chain and you have a 3100 ATK monster that gets to kill something when it’s equipped – AND then again, if Blast with Chain is destroyed (Blast with Chain also works extremely well with the Iron Knight).

It is now more possible than ever to build a successful deck around Gearfried.  Give it a try; it’s very rentsy.

Snapper Gearfried the Swordmaster

As Adolescent Card Week progress we begin to delve into some FET cards, cards I might remind everyone won’t be Tournament legal for a few weeks.
Anyway, today’s card is Gearfried the Swordmaster, a monster that revives an old friend from the shoeboxes of the world.

Swordmaster has fairly good stats; 2600 ATK is unchallenged by all but Level
7 or higher monsters, something he won’t be worrying about too often. He’s also a Warrior, a Type that gives Swordmaster only power boosts due to his high Level. Sadly (in my opinion anyway) Swordmaster is a Nomi monster, a classification I really despise. The only way Swordmaster can be summoned is through Release Restraint, a Spell that requires the Tribute of a Gearfried the Iron Knight to Special Summon Swordmaster from your hand or Deck. While this way of summoning a Nomi monster is the easiest method, Swordmaster still loses a few points in my book.

Swordmaster’s main effect is a rather useful one; when equipped with an Equip Spell Card, Swordmaster destroys one of the opponent’s monsters. Now there are two ways of looking at this effect. The optimistic way is to see it as monster destruction with the advantage of making Swordmaster stronger.
Then there’s the way that people who use the same 35 cards in every Deck see it, as giving a bunch of usually dead draws to a “crappy” Nomi monster to do what a Smashing Ground, Nobleman of Crossout, or Lightning Vortex can do much easier and all the while maintain “card advantage”. While these realists bring up a good point, not every card was made to be used competitively, and Swordmaster is one of those cards. So since it won’t be seeing much/any competitive play, use Swordmaster is a Deck with 3 Gearfried the Iron Knights, and a bunch of Equip Spell Cards.

Advanced (Casual Gearfried Deck): 4.5/5. Being a Nomi monster brings him down a few pegs… Traditional (Casual Gearfried Deck): 4/5. I’d probably stick with Raigeki and Dark Hole, but it’s casual; GO CRAZY!
Overall (Casual Gearfried Deck): 4.25/5.
Art: 4/5. It for some reason reminds me of an Amazoness monster exclusive to the OCG…

dawnyoshi We're looking at one of the new Flaming Eternity ultra rares today; a monster that premiered on the Yu-Gi-Oh anime as the armor-free Gearfried the Iron Knight. Today's card is Gearfried the Swordmaster.

This level 7 monster is easy enough to summon. It's special summoned from your deck if you use "Release Restaints" on your Gearfried the Iron Knight, which can be tutored out of your deck with Reinforcement of the Army. You'll need to protect this monster though, as it's carrying on a popular trend of large threats being "nomi monsters" (they can't be summoned except through their effect). While the Swordmaster has a strong ATK, its effect can destroy any monster that would potentially threaten it when an equip card is equipped to it. This means cards like Mage Power, United we Stand, Blast with Chain, or even Archfiend of Gilfer, Gearfried can destroy one monster on your opponent's field. But is it worth basing a deck strategy on a situational to summon monster? Not in a tournament environment unfortunately. Despite how easy it may seem to summon Gearfried the Swordmaster, the only card of the two needed to summon it that can be searched for it Gearfried the Iron Knight. This significantly weakens how often the Swordmaster will see play. That's also excluding any trap cards your opponent can use to remove the Swordmaster from the field. Keep this card in your fun deck, but it just doesn't belong in tournaments.

In limited, this card cannot be played. Period. It's a rare draft and that's it.

Otaku

Yet another shortened review from me.  For those who read yesterday’s, I did miss the combo between Ectoplasmer and Malice Doll of Demise.  Ouch.  Fortunately, I didn’t see anything indicating it was that great a combination: at 1600 ATK, most decks relying on ATK strength will be able to attack and kill it: Sonic Duck is a Level 3 1700, and Injection Fairy Lily can slip under Gravity Bind, then be Tributed for Ectoplasmer’s effect to keep her from being a liability.  Not saying I wouldn’t run them together, just that ultimately, I don’t know if they would really mean much to my scores, since I keep thinking of ways for such a deck to backfire.

Okay, onto the actual review: Gearfried the Swordsmaster.  This Level  7 Monster can only be Special Summoned, and then only through the effect of the Spell Release Restraint, which requires you Tribute a Gearfried the Iron Knight, but then let’s you search your deck for this big bad boy.  Okay, so all in all, this sounds good to me: Lighten the Load can be used so that Gearfried the Swordsmaster is never wasting time in your hand.  The Warrior Returning Alive and A Feather of the Phoenix can both get around its apparent “nomi” status (going by the wording, I don’t think you can revive it from the Graveyard directly to the field)., returning it to hand or deck (recommend that latter for Release Restraint).  According to the FAQ, you can chain Serial Spell to Release Restraint to summon two Gearfried the Swordsmaster at once.  Okay, I am getting ahead of myself.  Why do you want to run this card?  Well, it is a Light/Warrior, and if it is a nomi Monster, you might as well use it for Chaos Food once it hits the Graveyard… but obviously that’s not the best use for it.  As a Light/Warrior, it does have plentiful support.  It has a 2600 ATK which means only a few commonly played Monsters like BLS can safely run over it, and solid 2200 DEF so someone can’t just Book of Moon it then run over it with a Berserk Gorilla.  On its own, this still wouldn’t be enough, so fortunately it has a very nasty effect: whenever you attach an Equip card (anything that call itself an Equip, be it Spell, Trap, or Monster), you get to nuke 1 Monster on your opponent’s side of the field.

While not a dominating effect on its own, the whole package is pretty stable.  How so?  Gearfried the Iron Knight is a Level 4 1800 attack solid Beatstick that is unaffected by Equip cards.  It can also be searched out by Reinforcements of the Army.  Hmmm… I think I understand why Butterfly Dagger-Elma was banned now.  We all know it could be abused with the old Gearfried, and there might have been some tricks with the new one… but I digress.  There is some support for Equip cards (Iron Blacksmith Kotetsu), as stated there is a bunch of support for Warriors, so building a deck around Gearfried the Swordsmaster seems reasonable enough, and in exchange for not being super sick, we get a reasonably big monster with a good effect who honestly seems fairly easy to summon.  I mean, in a 40 card deck, you could have 3 Gearfried the Iron Knight and two Reinforcements of the Army.  So having one or the other is pretty simple.  It’ll just be a matter of getting release restraint into hand.

Ratings

Traditional: 3/5-You can build a deck around this, and sometimes it will win.  It just won’t win that much against good Chaos builds, since they gain access to more goodies than you do compared with the Advanced format.

Advanced: 3.75/5-I honestly think this could be potent.  Equip cards can be very, very nasty when you know what you’re doing.  Your opponent think they’re hot because their Heavy Storm just left [this] Gearfried “naked”?  Chain a set “Blast with Chain”, equip it to [this] Gearfried, and nuke two of their cards.

Limited: 1/5-You can bluff with it, but with no Gearfried the Iron Knight in the set, it’s not like you can summon it.

*sigh* Leaving out my normal formatting doesn’t seem to decrease the length of my reviews, does it?

Dark Paladin Hey to all you folks reading Card of the Day! This is Dark Paladin live on the scene straight from Dark Paladin's Dimension!

Today we have a very nifty card from Flaming Entity.

Gearfried the Swordmaster

Level 7
2600-2300
Warrior/Effect: This card cannot be normal summoned or set. This card cannot be special summoned except by the effect of "Release Restraint." When this card is equipped with an equip spell card, destroy 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field.

At first look, 2600 attack for a Level 7 monster isn't too bad. His effect could be real annoying for your opponent too. Destroying their Black Luster Soldier with this guy just by equipping him with anything. However, summoning Gearfried the Swordmaster can be quite difficult. He's essentially a Ritual monster, or at least summoned in that way. First, you have to have Gearfried the Iron Knight on the Field. Then, you have to play Release Restraint.
Plus,
you have to have the Swordmaster in your hand. Do you now see how difficult this card can be to summon? Also, unless whatever equip you have attached to the Swordmaster gets destroyed, you'll probably only use his effect once.

So, while at first glance this guy may seem like a powerhouse with a whopping effect, summoning requirements hold him back, greatly. Also, since we sadly have better Warrior monsters, even tribute ones in say...Freed the Matchless General, I think Warrior decks can get off without this guy. Don't get me wrong, he is an improvement over the original Gearfried. If he were just a tribute monster, I think he'd be a bit more playable. However, I suppose a decent Warrior deck could be built around the Swordmaster. 3 of Him, 3 Restraint Relase, and 3 original Gearfrieds.

Conclusion: Try building one, and see how it goes for you.

Rating:

Traditional: 2.5/5 There is more monster removal, CED to worry about, don't try him here except for fun.

Advanced: 3/5 I upped this a bit because he could actually have a decent deck built around him. He is a bit more viable option here.

Limited: I'm not sure if I can score here. The odds of pulling both cards you need from just FET packs isn't awful, but you better have held on to that PSV Gearfried. If you have the cards here, he could be a force to be reckoned with. 3.5/5

Art: 4.25/5 I love this cards nifty holofoil art!

Until tomorrow, you stay classy, Planet Earth :)
