Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Harpie Lady 3
Common

This card's name is treated as Harpie Lady. Your opponent's monster that battles with this card cannot declare an attack for your opponent's next 2 turns.

Type - Winged Beast/Effect
Card Number
- RDS-EN019

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale 1 being
the worst.  3 ... average.  5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 01.06.05

Coin Flip And as though yesterday's card weren't bad enough... Now we have the epitomy of useless effects in a pathetic attempt to add support to the Harpy Lady decks (while Chaos and Machine get Fusilier Dragon, FIRE/Pyro get even more support, and stuff that they need to support sits there and looks stupid).

Basically, it's a Swords of Revealing Light on 1 monster. Well, actually, more like a Swords of Revealing Light that requires it to have been attacked by another monster and lasts for one less turn in exchange for not being vulnerable on the field.

Okay. That's about it. It (unlike Harpy Lady 1) will easily die in battle and has an effect that doesn't make up for it.

She's useless in Harpy decks, making her useless everywhere else.

1.5/5 Traditional
2/5 Advanced (Eh, at least you're likely to use the effect here.)

Harpie Lady 3

Unlike her two predecessors, this Harpie Lady doesn’t have much going for her.  She has the same stats and all that, but her effect isn’t very useful and probably won’t help you nearly as much as the others’ might.

If something battles it, that something can’t attack for two turns.  Well…fine; it’s like a small, focused Swords of Revealing Light that you have to sacrifice a monster for (because, let’s face it, this Harpie isn’t going to survive many attacks).  While it might be useful if she’s attacked by a huge beatstick like Jinzo or Mobius, there are better ways to deal with those than freezing them for a while.

Regardless, this is a monster you might want to consider if only for that wonderful surprise factor.  Or to complete the set.

Snapper Harpie Lady 3

(This review should look familiar…) We already reviewed Harpie Lady 1 and 2, so by law we must review Harpie Lady 3 as well.

Just so you know: The name of Harpie Lady 3 is treated as Harpie Lady for all purposes, including Deck construction. So you can have 2 copies of Harpie Lady 3 in your Deck and 1 copy of Harpie Lady 1, but not 2 copies of each because you would have 4 cards in your Deck treated as Harpie Lady.
This restriction also applies to your Side Deck, so if you have 3 monsters treated as Harpie Lady in your Deck, you cannot have any in your Side Deck.

The stats of all Harpie Ladies are the same. They all have 1300 ATK, making all of them in need of some type of power boost. Like Harpie Lady 2, Harpie Lady 3 can’t give itself this needed increase in ATK. It’s a sad truth, but the effect kind of makes up for it. The effect causes Harpie Lady 3 to prevent monsters it battles with from attacking for two turns. The effect is somewhat useful as a stall tactic; it will prevent that Black Luster Soldier from using its second attack ability this turn and won’t allow it to attack on the next. Not much else to say; it’s a stall tactic.

Harpie Lady 3 fits in Harpie Decks with ease. And if you want to be different, it also works in some weird type of Stall Deck.

Harpie Lady 3 is indeed better than the original, but it’s second fiddle to Harpie Lady 1.

Advanced Format (Harpie Deck): 3.5/5. I’d personally use Harpie Lady 1 over this, but that’s just me.
Traditional Format (Harpie Deck): 3.5/5. I’d personally use Harpie Lady 1 over this, but that’s just me.
Overall: 3.5/5.
Art: 1/5. If you’re going to edit a card give it clothes, not purple skin.

Harpie Lady #3

Harpie Lady #3 is an unusual one; it's a mini-Swords, but only against the monster that attacked it.  Thus, it belongs more in the defensive Harpie deck...

...wait, didn't I just say these things were meant to be played offensively?

Harpie Lady #1 is the best of all, #2 is okay, and this is also only okay.  I think they accurately numbered them, at least.

I'd suggest playing 2 of Harpie Lady #1 and 1 of whatever one you think would help you more, if you're crazy enough to try this deck.

Stats                : Harpie Lady 3 is a Level 4 Wind/Winged-Beast.  Being a Level 4 Monster is fine: she can be dropped into play without any hassle.  As you should know if you reading this week’s CotDs, Wind has some pretty solid Monsters, but the best, are basically beatsticks (although two have decent effects).  Again, Winged-Beasts’ best support is shared with other types: for example, along with normal Beasts and Beast-Warriors, Winged-Beasts can get trample via Enraged Battle Ox.

Moving onto the ATK and DEF, we see that same, pretty low 1300/1400.  This isn’t enough to handle anything but spent Effect Monsters, and most Flip Effect Monsters (still Set or used up).  At least you can search and Summon Harpie Lady 3 from your deck via Flying Kamakiri #1.  But hey, I am sure her effect is better than yesterday’s, right?

Effect(s)            : Sadly, it’s not.  Her effect (aside from counting as Harpie Lady-see the last two CotDs for more detailed explanations) is that an opponent’s Monster that battles with Harpie Lady 3 can’t declare battle for the opponent’s next two turns.  Not too great an effect, in my opinion: Monsters still don’t last that long in Advanced, let alone in Traditional.

Uses and

Combinations  : If you absolutely need a third Harpie Lady card and it’s a choice between this and the original, then this is your Monster!  Other wise, don’t bother unless you are running a Mai themed deck or something.  There are a few scenarios where her effect is useful, but each is less likely than the last.

Ratings

Traditional       : 1.25/5-Well, the effect might occasionally go off and help a little.

Advanced        : 2/5-The effect has a much better chance of going off.  It’s still not that useful though.

Limited            : 3/5-Here it can come in handy, especially if you pull any of its support.  Even on its own, it can be a life saver: that big monster they just summoned?  It’s going to be real useless for two turns…

Summary

In a game where Monsters rarely last more than two turns, is it really that useful to have a Monster that can only stop attacks if she is in battle with the Monster you want to stop?  If it’s stronger than her, it might help… but most things are stronger than her: why not summon something big to beat theirs?  Oh, and if they are weaker, they’ll die in the battle.
