ExMinion OfDarkness Silent Swordsman Lv. 7

Let's look at what you get for running a dead draw in your deck!

Once you get that direct attack with Silent 5, out comes a 2800/1000 who negates all Spell cards. This is a good situation to be in usually -- If you have a 2800 powerhouse out and your opponent doesn't, that double-edged sword of not being able to use Spells hurts your opponent more than you.
But on the same note, it means you can't Nobleman an opposing Fiber Jar.
X-Force, anyone?

As with all of the highest evolutions in these series, it's a "nomi" monster
-- no revival from the Graveyard even though it's summoned properly.

This thing's Witchable, but who'd want to Witch this? You can only use it from Silent 5's effect or the hand, and I'd MUCH rather grab it from the deck...

Still, it's a great idea for Trap-oriented decks who use the bare minimum of Spell staples.

Coin Flip And, in a twist of fate that even a blind man would've seen coming, we review the last member of the Silent Swordsman family.

First off, let me say that the art for the Silent Swordsmans is awesome on a STICK. I love it.

Now, the effect sucks. I mean, the effect sucks. Aww crap, I said it again, didn't I?

Alright, let's do some serious analysis here. When you upgrade from 3 to 5, you get a hefty attack increase and an ability worth playing in a deck. When you upgrade from 5 to 7, you get a cool attack upgrade and an effect akin to but not identical to Spell Cancellor. That's fine on its own. 2800... Nomi... Has built-in protection...

But, y'know, I keep on having the feeling that something far better than this already exists, and that it is also a LV family, and was in Soul of the Duelist. Its name began with an H. Guessed it?

That means that, essentially, Silent Swordsman is weaker than Horus, and both their arts are awesome. That leaves the decision to play up to preference.

I'll take Horus, PLZ.

I don't know if I even want to give him a rating in Silent Swordsman decks. This would have been awesome if there were some other reason to run him... But the effect was just a disappointing end to a promising series. I blame Konami.

Tranorix Silent Swordsman LV7

LV7 is the final form of Silent Swordsman. I won’t call him the ultimate form because, quite frankly, I think LV5 is better (and if any of you are familiar with my Top 10 List for Soul of the Duelist in the Pojo magazine, you’ll know why). His ATK is great, at 2800; but he’s a nomi monster, meaning he can only be brought to the field via the effect of LV5 (which may or may not happen…) or Level Up! and can then never be brought back.

He negates all Spell Cards. Swords won’t touch him, Smashing Ground won’t touch him, your opponent’s Pot of Greed’ll be useless. But that also means you can use your Spells, which certainly makes his effect less desirable than, say, Horus LV8’s or even Swordsman LV5’s. Yes, it’s useful, but it can backfire too.

Add that to the relative difficulty involved with summoning him (unless you Level Up!, which I still don’t really recommend), and you’re left with a monster that probably shouldn’t have grown up.

Snapper Silent Swordsman LV7

Our last card this week is Silent Swordsman LV7, a Spell Canceller wannabe.

LV7 has fairly good stats; 2800 ATK is really good for a monster of such a high Level, and considering you can’t summon it through sacrifices that makes it even better. It’s a Warrior giving it the option of power boosts, and that’s about it for stats. As you might have caught on, LV7 is a Nomi monster, meaning it can only be Special Summoned through LV5. And if don’t remember LV5’s occasionally easy and occasionally difficult requirement of Special Summoning LV7, you may have an easy or hard time Special Summoning
LV7 through LV5, depending on your occasion.

LV7’s primary effect is basically equal to that of Spell Canceller in that it negates all Spell Cards while it’s face-up on the field. As was something to be wary of with Spell Canceller, one who uses LV7 needs to be careful not to use too many Spells. I’m not saying you should rely on Traps for all your needs, but don’t depend on Spells to save your behind if you plan to use LV7. Other than that, LV7’s effect is pretty straightforward; just keep it is Silent Swordsman Decks.

Advanced (SS Deck): 3.5/5. Use a Level Up! on LV5 and you won’t have many problems summoning LV7.
Traditional (SS Deck): 3.5/5. Use a Level Up! on LV5 and you won’t have many problems summoning LV7.
Overall (SS Deck): 3.5/5.
Art: 2/5. All Silent Swordsmen that I’ve seen have their faces concealed.
They must be shy.

Otaku

For those wondering, yes, I know about the error in Silent Swordsman LV5’s CotD.  For those who missed it… go back and try again.  Might as well get a laugh out of it. ;)

Effect               : Let’s jump straight to the effect for this one: Silent Swordsman cannot be Normal Summoned or Set.  This is pretty common for the Level Monsters, but given that the only ways to get this into play are making a successful Direct Attack with Silent Swordsman LV5 and surviving to the next Standby Phase to use the effect to search and summon this, or use Level Up!  Since it can be searched from the deck, it’s really always a dead draw.  With all these restrictions, do we get a killer effect?  The negation of the effects of all Spell Cards on the field qualifies as a killer effect to me.  Yes, this limits you somewhat, but you know this when building your own deck.  Spell cards are so important to nearly every deck in the game that this can really force an opponent’s game to grind to a halt.  That is, if the rest of the card is strong enough to take care of itself: we all remember how Spell Canceller is not played. ;)

Stats                : This is a Level 7 Monster, naturally, but that doesn’t really mean so much given the ways it has to enter play.  Thankfully, it is a logical extension of its line, and retains the same great Attribute (Light) and Type (Warrior, most supported of all types).  We also get a fantastic 2800 ATK; enough you should be able to stand up to most commonly played Monsters… except Black Luster Soldier-Envoy of the Beginning.  Its puny DEF of 1000 could be a sore spot: Gravekeeper Decks, for example, can quickly recover with Gravekeeper’s Assailant, and in general cards like Windstorm of Etaqua.

Uses and

Combinations  : Only for a Silent Swordsman deck.  Simply put, combined with cards like Jinzo or Royal Command, you can easily reduce an opponent to reliance on effect Monsters.  Even then, there are some cards that could be added with relative ease to reduce it even further, relegating the opponent to needing effects they could activate on their turn.   Just make sure you lock down the Spells when you don’t need them too badly.

Ratings

Traditional       : 3.25/5-It looks to be a pain to get out, but once it shows up you should be able to win barring a lucky top deck of some sort.

Advanced        : 3.75/5-Again, it’s getting it into play that really hurts it.  Still, it is something you want in a Silent Swordsman deck, and who knows, you might consider tossing one in with two Silent Swordsman LV5 into many decks/side decks.

Limited            : N/A-If it is ever released in a manner it could be played, it would be a 1/5 due to the insane difficulty of getting it into play.

Summary

Due to time constraints, I had to be very, very brief with this article.  As such, it has come across somewhat negative.  Don’t get me wrong.  You should see Silent Swordsman decks.  It’s a Chaos friendly line and with the right cards will more or less totally shut an opponent down.  It’s just that it’s a hard set-up to accomplish.
