DM7FGD  The Envoy of the Beginning is certainly an extremely versatile card. One of the best in the game today. Here's a link to my first review on it; my first article back about 7 months ago.

http://www.pojo.com/yu-gi-oh/FeaturedWriters/DM7FGD/2003/The%20Messengers%20of%20Chaos.shtml

And here's an excerpt from my 32nd article, with a little bit about Revival.

When using the Luster Soldier’s ability of attacking twice in a turn, if you have destroyed a Monster with Luster Soldier, then you can attack again with the Soldier, as you know. However, if you want to use that Effect, Luster Soldier’s 2nd attack must come right after the first. That's one right after the other. If you have another Monster on the Field, and you’ve destroyed a Monster with Chaos Soldier, then your next attack is with your other Monster, Chaos Soldier won’t be able to attack again. Luster Soldier’s attack twice Effect is a continuation, so to speak, of its first attack.
Therefore, the attacks must come one right after the other. And yes, the 2nd attack can be direct if your opponent doesn’t have any other Monsters left on the Field. And no, if Chaos Soldier destroys one Monster, then destroys another Monster by its 2nd attack, it can not proceed in attacking a third time. 2 attacks max per turn.

If you want to Revive the Envoy, you must first have successfully Special Summoned it to the Field by its requirements. If you have not done so before it hits the Graveyard, you cannot Revive it. You can't Special Summon it from your Deck or Graveyard by its requirements of Removal, either. Only from your Hand, and when it states that it can "only be Special Summoned by..." that's only referring to how you can Special Summon it from your Hand.

The Envoy of the Beginning is a card that I believe to be underrated by a lot of people when compared to Chaos Emperor Dragon, mostly due to the one-turn-win combo that can be utilized with CED. (Which btw, is something that a lot of people give CED only credit for, when it‘s a lot more useful than just for that combo) I myself find the Chaos Soldier to be a more versatile and fun card to use in Decks over CED. Its removal Effect can always come in handy, and attacking twice with a 3000 ATK Monster can easily put an end to your opponent in a single turn. This is why I'd give BLS a bit of a higher rating than I'd give CED.

f00b Thu 03.18.04 - Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning (BLS)

Ah yes, one of the 2 broken monsters released in Invasion of Chaos that have metagame-altering and game-shattering effects. Quite simply, these are as close to God cards as the English game provides right now.

Pros:
+2 KILLER effects, including attacking twice and removing monsters from
+the
game.
+Easily special summoned by removing 1 light/1 dark mon in grave from
+play Makes one of if not THE best top deck in the game (especially
+later in the
game)
+8 stars means it cannot be snatched + morphed into something (there are
+no
8 star fusions)

Cons:
-Will undoubtedly be limited to 1 per deck -Is bad if used against you -Must be properly summoned first before being ‘reborn’
-BLS can however be snatched and then use its effect to remove itself -_-

Combos:
*Dimension Fusion…remove some powerful light/dark monsters to special summon BLS, then Dimension Fusion them back to the game and you can like, win in one turn this way… *Painful choice…Obviously, using painful choice to dump some light/dark monsters into the graveyard is advantageous if you’re looking to summon BLS quickly *Fairy Meteor Crush/Big Bang Shot…attack twice with trample and 3000 atk?
Ok…
*Actually, there are too many, let me just rant about how good this card is.

When I saw this card I almost died because I play(ed) control. This is like, THE ultimate control card of all time. Period. Look at BLS. It has the same stats as its twin CED, 3000/2500 which is enormous. Combine that with the fact that BLS has 2 effects like other cards such as Don Zaloog and the rest of the scorpion gang. Except these two effects are devastating in their own right. First of all, BLS has a D.D. Warrior Lady like effect, removing a monster from play. How is this good? SEVERAL reasons. Right now almost every competitive deck out there runs witch and sangan for searching. Many others run shining angel or mystic tomato to thin their deck as well. Others run stall cards such as sinister serpent and spirit reaper, while others run big flip effects like magician of faith or cyber jar, or worse, fiber jar.
Why do I mention all of these monsters? Because they are ALL (each and every one of them) countered by Black Luster Soldier’s removal effect. He doesn’t attack the monster, so no flip effects are activated, they don’t die in battle for searching effects, they don’t go to graveyard for witch/sangan effects, spirit reaper is removed from the game instead of staying out as a permanent wall, sinister serpent isn’t going to be returning to the opponent’s hand anytime soon, not to mention that BLS can just literally remove any threat to himself, like an opposing D.D. Warrior Lady, because if he attacks her, he will end up getting removed himself and therefore it is better to use the removal effect. Or, say the opponent has a chaos monster out of their own, instead of suiciding into another 3000 attack monster, he can just remove it and stay on the field himself. As if this wasn’t bad enough already, BLS has a secondary effect, where if he destroys an opponent’s monster in battle he can attack once more. First, let me clarify something, if your opponent has 3 monsters out and you have Black Luster Soldier, you can only destroy up to TWO monsters with this effect, not all three. I.e. once you have already attacked a second time, even though you may destroy yet another monster, BLS is done attacking. Alright, so this hayabusa knight - like effect is VERY useful, no? The ability to attack twice with a 3000 attack says “unless I run into spirit reaper, labyrinth wall, or man eater bug effects, I destroy two monsters with my one.” Nice trade in my opinion. And your monster (BLS) stays on the field.

WOW. Look to its name for an idea of its power - envoy of the beginning.
Yea, the beginning of a long game of pain and suffering for your opponent.
This Envoy deserves an award for something ;P Like, most br0ken monster card ever ;P So what combos work well with this emissary of pain? There aren’t any game-locking combos such as with Chaos Emperor Dragon, but I’d say it’s as good as game over if you manage to get out a Black Luster Soldier and Imperial Order onto the field. The only things to worry about would be monster effects like, Tribe-Infecting Virus, Jowgen the Spiritualist, Exiled Force, or D.D. Warrior Lady. Still, it would be a nice setup. Also, it would be good to use BLS with other monsters who have good effects when they damage your opponent’s life points, such as spirit reaper or masked sorcerer, or of course, Yata-Garasu. Indubitably, with BLS clearing the field but unable to attack, these “little guys” can get through and gain you advantage.

Ratings:
Constructed: 4/5, you have to gear your deck around it a little, and graveyard disruption hurts, but this card is simply DEVASTATING.
Limited: 5/5 First of all, this card is like unbeatable once you get it out.
Second, it’s such an expensive card you can’t pass it up. And third, all you need to do is draft light/dark monsters to be able to play this in limited. Wow.

I guarantee in the near future [every] deck will be packing 1 of these.

Omega  I am warning everyone right now that this review is going to be very Bias, due to the fact that this is one of my Favorite Freaking Cards in the entire game

Black Luster Solder: Envoy of the Beginning is part of the Chaos Duo. I like to call these “Tournament Legal God cards” as they are so freaking powerful.

Some may argue that Chaos Emperor Dragon is better than the Soldier, but I however will have to disagree. Black Luster Solder is meant to be a fighting monster. Unlike Chaos Emperor Dragon where he shines thought him leaving the field through his effect.

Black Luster Soldier is incredibly easy to summon, all you have to do is remove 1 Light and 1 Dark type from your graveyard from play.

Finding dark types should be no problem, as most decks already play with about 4-5 anyway. Now finding good light types poses a small problem. Right now there aren’t a lot of tournament winning Light Monster Types. One of the only ones I can think of right now is D.D Warrior Lady, and even then her own effect gets in the way sometimes.

But when you get him onto the field this is where his power comes in.

Black Luster Soldier has the stats of a Blue Eyes White Dragon, however is MUCH easier to summon. He has 2 effects, 1 is a second attack providing you destroyed a monster in the first attack, OR you can remove 1 monster from play. But you can only use 1 of the effects.

This is an AMAZING asset to Warrior decks, as well as the new “Chaos” decks.

I’m giving this monster another perfect 5/5 because of how damn awesome it is.

If you need any more information about Black Luster Soldier, check out DM7’s article located (most likely) in his CotD review he will most likely do.

Stats: Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning is a Level 8 monster, but it’s only able to be Special Summoned by its effect (I think?), so this only matters if you encounter the odd Gravity Bind deck or are insane and use it to fuel a Ritual Summon. XD It’s a Light Warrior, which is good-both have ample support.  3000 ATK is great (not the highest, but up there) and a good DEF (2500), though a lower DEF might have been nice to make it searchable via Witch of the Black Forest.

Card Text (Effects): This card can only be Special Summoned by removing one Light and one Dark Monster in your Graveyard from play.  I can’t find the rulings right now, so I am kinda of running blind here.  I thought this card could only be Special Summoned, but its wording isn’t really clear (is the restriction just on special summons, or on all summons?).  Still, its probably easier to special Summon it this way than through a normal summon, so that’s nice.  Its second effect is that you can use it to remove one monster on the field from play, but can’t attack the turn you do-useful, but not game breaking.  The second effect lets you attack again with this monster right away if its first attack destroyed an opposing monster.  Since both effects are preceded by the same restriction “Once during each of your turns, you can select and activate 1 of the following effects”.  As such, assume that the second option just means one other attack-even if destroy a second monster.  Still, a pretty nice effect if you know the first monster is harmless to kill.

Uses/Combinations: …okay, it’s a big, nasty “Chaos” monster, and that is its use.  In a deck that can handle it, it will be a great way of gaining field control.  I can’t really think of any true combos.

Ratings

Casual: 4.5/5-Not really a casual monster, though…

Constructed: 4/5-Maybe I am missing it, but this doesn’t seem as potent as people have made it sound.  It’s a huge beatstick that comes with some extra monster removal.  This is great, but a Mirror Force still kills it, and it can’t destroy my Exiled for when I summon it (yeah, I still use Exiled, at least for now).  If your opponent is not already on the ropes with just a single monster on the field, then yeah, this will help you.  I guess it sets up for Yata too…

Limited: 4.5/5-Removal and a big beatstick all in one!

Summary

Defintely feel like I’ve missed something, but right now, it appears to be (say it with me now) a big beatstick with buit in monster removal.

Black Luster Soldier -- Envoy of the Beginning
IOC-025
Light
Warrior/8/3000/2500
This card can only be Special Summoned by removing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK
monster in your Graveyard from play. Once during each of your turns,
you can select and activate 1 of the following effects:
:- Remove 1 monster on the field from play. If you activate this
effect, this card cannot attack this turn.
:- If this card destroyed your opponent's monster as a result of
battle, it can attack once again in a row.

One of the two big daddies of the set -- this Ultra sells for almost as
much as the hobby box Secret rare, Chaos Emperor Dragon. CED is going
for about $30-32, and this holds steady at $25. If you can get this in
cheap in a trade, be thankful.

The summoning isn't very difficult, only needing 1 light and 1 dark monster.
There are many cards that will help save you AND get cards into the
Graveyard: Mystic Tomato, Shining Angel, Painful Choice, and the like, to name a few.
If you're running more than 1 of this (before its restriction), keep in
mind that he's Light himself, so if you dumped one, you can use it as
food for another.

The effects are sweet. Either give up attacking and flat-out remove a
monster, or get to attack twice -- the second attack can even be
direct! This card is actually more versatile than its Dragon friend,
but it will see a bit less play because of the popularity.

Things to watch out for when playing with the Chaos monsters:
*Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer. His effect would disallow you from
removing the necessary cards to Special Summon this guy.
*Necrovalley -- and Gravekeeper decks in general. Gravekeeper decks
love to cut you off from your own Graveyard.
*Solemn Judgment -- would negate the summon, so you wouldn't get to use
any effects.
*Soul Release -- could prevent you from keeping the mons in the
graveyard long enough.
*Disappear -- if you only have the one light or dark monster, it can
prevent the summon.
*Big Burn -- nukes all monsters in Graveyards.

The issue on summoning this thing is not the amount of Dark monsters,
but the Light. If you play Control, you already have some of these:
Mystic Tomatoes, Don Zaloogs, Sangan, Witch, Magical Scientist, Jinzo,
Spirit Reapers...for lights, you're stuck with DD Warrior Lady (and if
you use her effect, you're kind of defeating the purpose...), Magician
of Faith, Shining Angel, and Reflect Bounder. Thunder Dragon could
also be used (and is a good deck thinner) but getting 2 in the opening draw BITES.

4.5/5 for versatility, easy summoning, and sick effects.
