Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Des Koala

Card Number - MFC-077

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 11.24.03

DuelMonster Monday:11/24/03

Des Koala/Death Koala:
MFC-077-Rare
Dark/Beast/3/1100/1800
Effect: FLIP: Inflict 400 points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points for each card in your opponent's hand.

Pros:
Searchable Via Sangan and Tomato + Last Will but it won't do much good unless you're using Book Of Moon.
1800 DEF

Cons:
Only 1100 ATK
BBtD, Sasuke, NoC, Dark Core, Raigeki Break, TttD, Etc all own this card.

Combos:
Hiro's Shadow Scout, Giant Trunade, anything to get more cards into their hand
Infinite Cards -

Notes:
Though it won't be too often that your opponent has a hand really full of cards, most good decks these days rely on a lot on emptying their opponents hand and clearing their Filed, so Des Koala won't really do much good in those type of decks obviously. In a straight Burner Deck teamed up with CeaseFire, Secret Barrel, Just Desserts and even Princess Of Tsurugi and then use cards to fill your opponents hand like Hiro's Shadow Scout, Penguin Soldier and Giant Trunade.

This was actually the first Rare I got out of MFC and still don't really think it's worth being Rare, but then again there are worse, Reaper OF The Cards quickly comes to mind. So yeah, even in a straight Burner Deck I probably wouldn't even attempt a Koala, at least not for a tournament deck.

Ratings:
Casual: 2.0
Tourney: 1.5
ArtWork: 2.5 - Well besides the eerie glow emitting from its body, it's just a cute little koala eating some eucalyptus, I do think Death Koala sounded better too.
MerrilHess Des Koala

Dark/3/1100/1800
[Beast/Effect]
Effect: FLIP: Inflict 400 points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points for each card in your opponent's hand.
Card Number MFC-077
Rare

Upsides:
Sangan-able
Great in numbers
Great when opponent has big hand
1800 defense ain’t half bad
1100 attack isn’t bad for 3 stars

Down Sides:
Not Witch-able
Change of Heart and Nobleman of Crossout pwnz this
1800 defense won’t hold up against all the 1900 attackers out there
1100 attack will get you nowhere in a hurry
Bad draw if you needed a good
Secret Barrel is better (will be reviewed this week)

Combos:
Multiple Koalas: 3 cards in Opponent’s hand = 1200 damage per koala. Catch my drift.
Dark Room of Nightmares: add on some extra damage

In casual, this card is pure fun. I mean it getting Nobleman’d is a bad thing, but you learn to live with it. It is still fun to try in a burner if you are making one.

In tourney, this card has no kind of help that qualifies it as a tourney contender, yet. It shouldn’t really see tourney play for now.

In sealed, this card is optional. It’s pretty good here, but it’s based on how well of hand management is being used. If your opponents are keeping a lot in there hands, bring this out on them. If not, keep it in the side deck.

Overall, I give Des Koala a 2.8/5

Casual Rating: 3.4
Tourney Rating: 2.2
Sealed Rating: 2.8
f00b Des Koala - 11/24/03

Des Koala Dark/3/1100/1800
[Beast/Effect]
Effect: FLIP: Inflict 400 points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points for each card in your opponent's hand.
Card Number MFC-077
Rare

Pros:
+Burn Effect
+1800!? Def could stall
+Synergy with Gravity Bind
+Cuddly little thing

Cons:
-Burn decks are like ice age right now
-Waste of deck space
-Monster Removal, esp. NoC

Just forget about using this card. Burn decks just don’t seem to stand a chance in today’s fast paced environment. Especially doing 400 per card, the only way this will add up is if your opponent has several cards in their hand…aka you’re gonna lose anyway because they have more cards than you.

Still, if you’re going to run a burner, then this is one of the “better” cards for damaging your opponent as far as the selection goes. But still, why go defensive when agro is the way to keep the pressure on? It’s up to you, my vote goes against this card.

In limited, this card can be a little better, as a nice little burn can add a beating to your opponent, especially since they may hold a higher number or no playable cards aka monsters in their hand. The one per turn without special summoning can mean Koala does a nice amount of damage here.

Still, this card works best in control. When they have no hand. I mean come on, 400 X 0 = g0dly. =\ j/k, but man if you can find a way to win with this card, you win some eucalyptus leaves from me.

Limited - 1.5/5

opponent's hand.
Card Number MFC-077

Here is a new addition for burner today. Des Koala, can do an average of I would say 1200 damage. Usually your opponent isn't going to have more than three cards in their hand. Since control is the most dominant type of deck in the tourneys today, I don't think this card is going to be that useful. The reason why control is so dominant in tourney play is the fact that it hits and gets rid of your opponent's options. So I don't think this card will receive that much play. Only in fun burner decks.

Tourney play: 2/5 Eh its only decent in burner, and burner isn't even that tourney playable.

Casual play: 3/5 If you don't want to play serious, than this could be a fun card to try out.

Limited: 4/5 Its fairly good here, because hands will usually get up to the full six cards. Unless you or your opponent drafts well.
Experiment JON Welcome to Burnt Week…

::CROSSES FINGERS AND HOPES THAT NEXT FEW BURN CARDS ARE SERIOUS BURN CARDS::

Anyway, Des Koala is a horrible card. Multiple copies of this card are sealed up in my 303 junk pile. (Yes I play Japanese. The only reason I have English cards is that Japanese Yatagarasu and Joey structure Jinzo’s are frowned upon).

First of all, what is up with the Des? I much preferred Death Koala. Come on UDE, “death” isn’t a bad word. You can put it on your cards.

Anyway, I hate this card. First it’s name, and then it’s pathetic stats. The fact that it’s effect is a flip effect isn’t helping either. 400 points for every card in your opponent’s hand…that will generally max this card out at 2000 damage. I experimented with three of these cards once in my brother’s deck. Generally, it would deal 800-1200 damage, but is that really a good effect?

I don’t think so. Now, if the attack of this monster was 100 points less, then it wouldn’t be wasting a space in your deck. With 1000 attack points, this monster would be able to fuel the Deck Destruction Virus (when it comes out). But now, as it is, this is a completely useless monster, and could be replaced by something with more attack.

Des (Death) Koala- 2/10
