Thursday - Giant Germ

Dark/2/1000/100
[Fiend/Effect]
When this card is sent to the Graveyard as a result of Battle, inflict 500 points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points. You can also take cards of the same name from your Deck and Special Summon them to the Field in face-up Attack Position. The Deck is then shuffled.

Giant Germ is obviously old-school burn-goodness. I remember running a casual burn deck back in the day packing three of these guys. You know, the original burn deck with Princess of Tsurugi, Chain Energy, and such.

Nowadays, I'm not sure if they will be delivering the same results. From the looks of the current metagame, chances are they won't. But swarmable Monsters are still very interesting nonetheless. The potential is still there for the future.

If you're considering using this in a non-Burn type deck, do yourself a favor and pack Nimble Momonga instead. That possible three thousand Life Point Gain will aid you much more than a measly fifteen hundred Life Point Damage to your opponent's head.

In Limited, he's no better than a regular Monster. The reason for this is becaus chances are you won't be seeing any more copies of this guy. Meaning that that swarm-Effect is next to useless. Although in Draft he's still pretty decent due to the fact that duels are set at 4000 Life Points per player. Five hundred direct Damage makes a much bigger impact there.

It just keeps coming back baby! What can I say? Any Monster that can multiply is quite the dish. First off, when it is sent to the graveyard as a result of battle, you get 2 more of these son of a puppies to slap right into play, and your opponent also takes 500 points of damage. How economical.

One of the biggest advantages to it's effect is it helps you get bait to use for tributes. Turn your Germ into a brand new Jinzo or even an Airknight Parsath if that card tickles your pickle. Oh sure, Nimble Momonga is much more convenient than Giant Germ, but you still got uses with this card.

In Limited play this thing is a beast. Having any card of quick Monster advantage on your opponent is sick, and dealing 500 is much more effective here with the lower life point total (if you play that way).

MerrilHess Giant Germ
Earth/fiend
2 Stars/1000 ATK/ 100 DEF
When this card is sent to the graveyard as a result of battle, inflict 500 points of direct damage to your opponent’s life points. You can also take cards out of the same name from your deck and Special summon them to the field in face up attack position. The deck is then shuffled.

Upsides: Witch, Sangan, and Giant Rat Searching possibility, Direct Damage, Deck thinner, Necrofear food

Down Sides: Too little direct damage, Has to be by result of battle, not a fan favorite, looks for other Germs

This card is decent , but only in decks that could utilize it’s skills. This means only earth, direct damage (burners), and Fiend decks should use it. In casual, this card is very fun. I also like the picture of the germ in the sky like it’s about to explode. It’s a sweet picture. In tourneys, this card wouldn’t be a determining factor to me, but who knows? I still wouldn’t play it. In sealed, this card should be played for it’s damage effect, but it is best used in numbers. So, if you get your hands on multiples of these, use them definitely.

Casual Rating: 3.5
Tourney Rating: 1.9
Sealed Rating: 1.0(if in multiples then it’s 2.0)
f00b Giant Germ - Thursday 11/13/03

Giant Germ Dark/2/1000/100
[Fiend/Effect]

Pros:
+Fiend type
+Deck Thinner
+LP Burn
+1000 attack, good in swarms

Cons:
-Must be destroyed in battle
-Summoned in Attack, not defense
-c00ties - Erm. It’s a germ…

Alright let’s get right down to it. This card’s most obvious use is in Necrofear decks.
Not only is it an efficient deck thinner, but it dumps 3 fiends in the graveyard, just enough to summon Dark Necrofear.

Along with others of its type, such as Nimble Momonga, Bubonic Vermin, etc, using cards like Giant Germ are a great way to drop your deck quickly by 3 cards, providing you with a better top deck. Also, it’s important to keep monsters on the field, and giant germ, save normal monster removal like Raigeki and dark hole, is a card that can stall a few turns for you. And, not often, but sometimes that 500-1500 burn damage germ provides is something your opponent may try to get around, especially since cards commonly played like confiscation, delinquent duo, ring of destruction and magical scientist quickly use up the Life Points of many duelists.

In draft, just like Nimbles, I’ve seen these go in pairs, sometimes even in threes. If you can manage to grab 3 of these babies you’ll gain a major advantage in the 20 card deck you have. And, playing with just 4000 LP per game, 500 makes much more of a difference. Three of these means up to 1500 LP, 37.5% of the total, all with a card that also keeps monsters on the field and thins your deck. Yea, I’d say that’s good. =D

Thursday's COTD is giant germ. Giant Germ has several uses. Its mainly a deck thinner, but obviously it has burn qualities too. You can use Giant Germ as a sacrifice for bigger monsters. So for instance if you have BEWD in your hand (I know BEWD is horrible, but I need a monster.) than all you have to do is get giant germ's effect once, deal 500, and than sac for bewd. There isn't really much to say on this card. Its burner, its swarm. 1000 attack is low, and its two stars making it useable with gravity bind, but who uses gravity bind now a days anyways?

Tourney Play: 2/5 Only use is in burner and gravity bind decks, but those decks aren't very competitive IMO anyways.
Casual Play: 3.5/5 It can be fun, use it over and over with fiber jar, its deck thinning!
Limited: 1/5: Unless you can get 3, which I highly doubt this card is horrible in limited.
Artwork: 2/5 Cuz the whole Germ thing, isn't really that appealing, also its just well germish.
