Ancient Gear Golem

Welcome to Throwback Thursday! Today we're having a look at Ancient Gear Golem, a level 8 earth machine with 3000 attack and defence. It was the signature card used by Veillian Crowler in GX and again by a duel academy professor in 5D's.

Ancient Gear Golem has seen a resurgence in play due to the Machine Reactor deck and several of its cards that allow it to be summoned while ignoring its summoning conditions and also it's ability to be fusion material for Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem.

Golem comes with a pair of effects and a rather intimidating piece of artwork. Firstly, it inflicts piercing damage and second, it comes with the standard Ancient Gear effect that prevents the opponent from activating spell or trap effects when it attacks. Lastly, Golem comes with a limiting condition that says it can never be special summoned, but we have access to a few Ancient Gear cards that bypass that.

One of several solid boss monsters for the Ancient Gear archetype. It all comes down to the player of the deck if they use it or not.

LV8.  Cannot be Special Summoned.  That alone makes it not viable before even reading the rest of the card.

Even when it came out back in '05, people didn't use it.  Ancient Gear Beast was quite a bit weaker but people preferred it (of the 2) as tech because it was realistically summonable.

Honestly, just use Jinzo.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Throwback Thursday highlights the monster most associated with the Ancients Gears: Ancient Gear Golem.

While a powerhouse in his own right, AGG can be a one-and-done kind of monster. Can't be Special Summoned hurts this card greatly. Losing it means having to run cards to fish it back from the grave, or find another copy in your deck. Yes, it stops spell/traps from activating when it attacks, and piercing with 3000ATK is fantastic, but if you cannot protect AGG, then he won't stay on the field for long. Cards like The First Monarch and Geartown can help with his summon, as well as The Monarch's Stormforth. Using it in combination with Safe Zone and Hardened Armed Dragon greatly increases its ability to stay on the field and maintain pressure on your opponent. It's also worth noting that Limiter Removal won't destroy AGG if either of those two have been used. If you can keep March of The Monarchs on the field that will add even more protection to your Ancient Gear Golem, as well as other Tribute Summoned monsters.

There is more support that can be used now than long ago with Ancient Gear Golem to make it a viable card within the archetype. If you can protect it, it will be a dominating boss monster for you, but without that protection it may not even last the turn you summon it.

Throwback Thursday is a throw out card. Ancient Gear Golem is a Level 8 Earth Machine-type monster with 3000 Atk and 3000 Def. Piercing with such high Atk is good. Attacking without having to worry about Spells or Traps is also good. Cannot be Special Summoned makes Ancient Gear Golem unplayable. It also doesn't protect other cards. It also doesn't have a grave effect if it is destroyed. Basically, it fails to boss monster properly. So it was replaced. Ancient Gear Golem has great stats, but it is not worth running in a competitive way. Even with the new structure making Ancient Gear Golem easier to Normal Summon, I still can't recommend using this monster. It's just too ancient.
