Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Day
Daily Since 2002!

Kaiser Colosseum
- #DR1-EN086

If there is 1 or more monster(s) on the field of the controller of this card, his/her opponent cannot place a monster on the field if his/her number of monsters would exceed the number of monsters that are on the field of this card's controller. The cards that are already on the field before this card's activation are unaffected by this effect.

Card Rating

Banning Kaiser Colosseum... Why?!!?!?!?!

It had its heyday back in the Bujin/HAT era but is not used now.  It's slow for a spell, is vulnerable to removal and it stops the player from making their own plays.  It's also a bad top deck and does nothing against an already existing swarm.

So, why ban it?

Because it's a floodgate? No. Skill Drain, Vanity's Emptiness, Soul Drain and many others are even more a threat and they were not banned.

Because it was a degenerative design that could shut out the opponent, despite not being a meta threat at the immediate moment? No. Otherwise, Royal Tribute and Deck Devastation Virus (as well as plenty of other cards) would have been banned too.

Because the card has the same initials as Kaiba Corp?  Maybe.  An absurd allegation is fitting for an absurd ban.  But then again, (gasp), it also has the same initials as Konami Corp.  We can rule that reason out.

Because it might give rogue decks the ability to threaten Pendulum swarming (the new central gameplay mechanic)? Likely.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Kaiser Colosseum was one of those cards that was in a lot of side decks and some main decks before meeting the ban hammer face-fist.

Controlling the amount of monsters on the field for both players is almost overpowering for it to be legal. If you have one monster, they can only have one monster. Combine that with decks like Kozmos, and opponents found themselves desperate to find some spell destruction effect to rid the field of the Colosseum. If you had control of the field and then played this card there may be little your opponent could do to get themselves out of the situation. Have one boss monster and this on the field and you can hold down swarm decks. Add in some protection against destruction and your opponent is facing an uphill climb against one Continuous Spell...who knew something that was vulnerable could be so devastating?

I think limiting it to one would've been enough, but I can see why it was banned.

Kaiser Colosseum is no longer available to be placed in decks. It stopped the opponent from placing monsters on the field if they would have more monsters than you controlled. Of course as a Continuous Spell Card, this could very easily be destroyed. They decided to ban it anyway. It's a particularly nasty card when you have a protected boss monster, but if you have that, you should be winning anyway. I guess the true champion in this Colosseum is Konami with the BanHammer.

Score: Banned/5 Probably could have been limited first.
Art: 4/5 Makes sense. Very gold.
