Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Day
Daily Since 2002!

Super Quantum Red Layer - #WIRA-EN030

If you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only use each of these effects of "Super Quantum Red Layer" once per turn. ● When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can target 1 "Super Quant" card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand. ● If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Super Quant" monster in your Graveyard, except "Super Quantum Red Layer"; Special Summon it, but it cannot activate its effects.

I love the names for these cards. Layer makes sense because of all the XYZ monsters this deck can summon. Super Quantum Red Layer besides having a great name is a Level 5 Fire Warrior-type monster with 2000 Atk and 800 Def. So it's no Cyber Dragon, but this card is technically easier to summon with its effect. Level 4 might have been better to work with ROTA, but Level 5 opens up Volcasaurus and other Rank 5 plays. Fire only works with 200 Def, but no card is perfect.

Super Quantum Red Layer has 3 effects that can all be used in the same turn and all activate in different places. The first effect is for it to Special Summon itself if you control no monsters. This effect makes it useful in non-Quantum decks that need a quick summon. Furthermore, this plus some Blue Layer and Emergency Teleports are an alternate tribute engine in Monarch decks, but more on that another day. The next 2 effects can only be done once per turn. After it's Normal or Special Summoned, you can target a Super Quant card in your grave and put it in your hand. XYZ monsters would go back to the Extra Deck, regular monsters including itself can be used that same turn, or you can get back the Field Spell or the Trap. Finally, if this card hits the Graveyard from anywhere, you can target a Super Quant monster in your grave except itself for a neutered Special Summon. Just because it can't activate its effects doesn't mean it can't attack or be used for more XYZ plays.

Score: 4/5 Super Quantum have a huge boss monster and a good Field Spell to get it out. The deck as a whole might not be worth that, but this card has great utility and versatility.

Art: 5/5 Red is my favorite color.

Ah, another new theme that plays homage to pop culture. Whoever is in charge of these card sets must be the ultimate fanboy. Anyway, my scoring this week will be based on the overall theme, as these cards are pretty much useless in any other deck.

Quantum Red Layer is a must-have in this deck. First and foremost, his first effect lets you get him on the field rather quickly, similarly to Cyber Dragon. But more importantly, it gives you two chances to re-use "Super Quant" cards that have hit the Grave. (It works for the mechs to, I believe.) This is important because as of now this theme has very few cards and therefore very little support. I'm not sure where Konami is going with this theme, but if for any reason they decide to ditch it, then there's really no reason for you to not run three of these.

Score: 5/5
