Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Day
Daily Since 2002!

Gofu the Vague Shadow
- #TDIL-EN013

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) while you control no monsters. When this card is Special Summoned from the hand: You can Special Summon 2 "Vague Shadow Tokens" (Winged Beast-Type/DARK/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0), but they cannot be Tributed or be used as Synchro Material. You can banish this card and 1 or more face-up non-Tuners you control, then target 1 "Blackwing" Synchro Monster in your Graveyard whose Level equals the total Levels the banished monsters had on the field; Special Summon it, and if you do, it is treated as a Tuner.

Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow

I like it when sets release "Generic" type cards, and this for me is the epitome of a very good generic card.

And based on how useful I feel that it actually can be, I'm surprised that this card was printed only as a Common... Especially since currently, everyone I know isn't letting go of any copies until they at least have their own personal playset.

While Gofu is a "Blackwing" and while it will of course be incredibly useful in Blackwings due to the fact that it alone is able to revive any Level 6 or 7 Blackwing Synchro monster from your Graveyard as well as be searched via Black Whirlwind, its use is most certainly able to be expanded outside of Blackwings.

The first use, although maybe initially not quite so obvious is the fact that Gofu is not only a Tuner, but a Level 5, and this makes it useful for making Ultimaya Tzolkin... But not only useful, but easier, generally, Ultimaya Tzolkin is created using something like Quickdraw Synchron, and that requires a discard whereas Gofu requires nothing other than an empty field.

Additionally, it allows for Rank 5's to be made using it instead of Super Quantum Red Layer... In the current Rank 5'ing Deck of Extra Deck Monarchs.

Speaking of Monarchs, if used in Monarchs, not only does Gofu provide easy access to Ultimaya Tzolkin as well as providing ways with which to Rank 5 with, but because Gofu is able to make 2 Tokens, those Tokens can be combined with Kuraz for an easy way to Draw more cards.

And of course at the very worst, Gofu is able to at least theoretically block up to 3 attacks.

Gofu is a card that is able to be useful in numerous ways, and more than just the few that I've suggested upon above, this is a card that I'll be certain to acquire 3 of, and this is one that I'd actually expect that most will aim to do so as well.

Rating: 3.75. While the fact that Gofu can only be Summoned via Special Summon while you control no monsters initially certainly hurts how useful this card can be, the ability to use it in multiple ways and in multiple Decks/ Strategy's certainly makes up for this. Its certainly going to be a card that I'd expect to see being used not only just now, but in the future as well.

In an effort to get Blackwings to be faster, a series of new monsters were released that attempt to special summon the synchro monsters at a high clip for lesser cost than normal. Gofu is a very good new piece that is part of that movement. It’s essentially an option to summon a level 6 or 7 previously synchro summoned monster from the grave just by itself by using the tokens, and that’s really good, especially since he can special summon himself and can be used for the synchro summon of any other synchro without restriction (you just can’t use the tokens in those cases).

Essentially, Gofu can easily summon synchro monsters ranging from 6 to 9: 6 to 7 from the grave, or level 8 to 9 and even level 10 from the extra deck. Unfortunately, there aren’t any level 9 or 10 Blackwing synchros, and there’s only 1 Level 8, and that monster, Silverwind, can’t be summoned with just two material. However, there are a dearth of generic level 8 options, including Beelze, which make Gofu a valuable option in many situations when you also have a non-tuner level 3 Blackwing. But most likely, the best play would be to summon Raikiri early in the game and then bring him out again later with Gofu when you need a quick pop turnaround.

Gofu has some downsides, as almost all Blackwings do to my chagrin. He has no offensive power, and he can’t be normal summoned. Also, it’s extremely tragic that his tokens aren’t Blackwings, which would have boosted cards like Raikiri and Delta Crow. Not only that, but those tokens can’t be tributed, which stinks because they would have been extremely useful in Blackwing builds utilizing Icarus Attack. Overall, Gofu is a solid support card that adds some flavor and defense, but he’s not outstanding. He should see play, even if Blackwings receive even more support in the future.

I seem to be in Pennsylvania instead of New York this morning. My phone just doesn't have the same appeal as my laptop for reviews. I have a vague suspicion that this will be a quick review of a great card for Blackwings.

Gofu - the Vague Shadow is a Level 5 Dark Winged Beast-type Tuner monster with 0 Atk and 0 Def. It's unfortunate that this cannot be Normal Summoned, but Special Summoning itself from the hand while there are no monsters on the field is pretty good. The tokens it summons alongside itself are meh for traditional synchro plays, but Gofu can instead get an old Blackwing Synchro monster from the grave by banishing itself and non tuners equal to the combined level. Then that new Synchro Monster is also a Tuner. Gofu is great early, middle, and end game. Blackwing decks love to Synchro and Gofu can give them some cheap rebirth all by itself. In other decks it can be used as tribute fodder or generic synchro/xyz support but the tokens are mandatory and can clog the field. Good luck.

Score: 4/5 Weak with balanced effect.
Art: 4.5/5 Kinda creepy in an awesome way.

New week, new cards, and we're opening with a Blackwing.  Gofu the Vague Shadow.  First off, you'll note this is a Level 5 Monster, but has 0 attack and defense.  But you're also going to note you can't Normal Summon or Set this card, and it can only be Special Summoned when you control no Monsters.  Gofu is also a Dark, Winged Beast Monster, and benefits from being a Tuner.  When Special Summoned from the Hand, you gain two tokens, although, these tokens can't be Tributed or used for Synchro Summon.  However, you can you can remove this card from play, as well as any face-up, non-Tuners you control, to Special Summon a Blackwing Synchro from your Graveyard.  The Level of the Synchro you choose has to equal the Level of the total Monsters you removed.  In situations like that, I prefer equal to or less than, but this is still a good card with a good effect, that gives speed to an all ready quick Deck.  Oh, and finally too, the Synchro you choose to Special Summon also becomes a Tuner, so you've got that going for you after you use this card for its effect.
