Tour Guide of the Underworld

Was limited to 1, so the Tour Guide engine (if anyone still uses it) is dead.  Kinda late if you ask me, but it’s a bit of a nerf for Burning Abyss, which as of right now, aside from Dark Worlds, will be the only deck needing to use it.  Sangan is still banned though.  Weird.

Tour Guide From the Underworld went through a LONG period of abuse at the start of the XYZ era, remember that?  Like most everything we looked at this week, she's not what she used to be, but not a bad card at all.  Having only one at your disposal makes her harder to abuse, and it's just not her day in the sun anymore.  She is unlimited in the OCG though, which is worth pointing out.  I expect everybody and their mother knows about Tour Guide, so we'll wrap up with, enjoy your weekend y'all

Hello Pojo Fans,

Everyones favorite redhead meets the bad end of the ban list once again. Tour Guide of The Underworld is now limited to 1, and with good reason.

Special Summoning a Level 3 Fiend-Type from your deck or hand is a great effect (almost every time from the deck). Despite it coming out as a “vanilla” if that monster has an effect that resolves in the graveyard, then that downside doesn't matter to you. Not being able to use it as a Synchro material doesn't hurt much either, as you usually are stacking it with Tour Guide to bring out a Rank 3.

This little lady was being run in 3's in Burning Abyss for quick access to ANY of the archetype members. A card, not specific to the archetype, searching ANY member of that archetype. Overpowering? Yes, when you remember that Burning Abyss fire off in the graveyard. While there are other targets for Tour Guide, Burning Abyss were already pretty powerful without her at 3. Burning Abyss needed to get hit on this list and the list did that. Without taking away from the archtype too much, they took away some power from them.

Tour Guide From the Underworld is no stranger to the banlist; she previously spent time on the Semi-Limited List from September 2012 to January 2014. At the original time of her release, Rank 3’s were by far the most powerful Xyz Monsters in the game, although they aren’t quite that anymore. In addition, Sangan was legal, and he was the most optimal target due to his utility.

Fast forward to now, and she has neither of those perks; Sangan is banned and Rank 3’s fell to the side as Rank 7’s and Rank 4’s took off. After a long period of irrelevance, Tour Guide found a new home in Burning Abyss, where she gave the Deck easy access to their boss monster, Dante. Additionally, Tour Guide can tutor out any of the Burning Abyss monsters, most notable Graff and Scarm, which allows you to easily search another Tour Guide after making an Xyz monster; something Sangan couldn’t do without leaving it on the board.

All of these traits proved to give Burning Abyss a mad amount of consistency, and Tour Guide has finally found herself back on the banlist, this time Limited. One can argue that the true problem was the Burning Abyss monsters themselves (as Tour Guide is still fairly lackluster outside of that Deck), but the impact it had on the Deck is felt regardless; Burning Abyss can no longer churn out Dantes quite as easily as they could before. The Limiting of Tour Guide also causes less restriction on future Rank 3 Decks; because she’s a self-interacting card, a single Tour Guide is less likely to be broken by a future Rank 3 monster.
