Closing the week we look at Fenghuang.  A new Spirit Monster...interesting.  That alone could almost be enough to kill any card that isn't an evil little bird...anyway, this is a Level 6 Monster (requiring a Tribute, if we didn't have enough hurting this card in being a Spirit) of the Fire attribute, and a Winged-Beast, with 2100 attack and 1800 defense.  Tribute, Spirit, and low attack and defense...this isn't looking good...OH, and you can't Special Summon this card?  Is Fenghuang really that powerful?  When Normal Summoned or flipped face up, destroy all Set Magic and Trap cards your opponent controls.  That isn't bad, but in a format with Heavy Storm AND triple MST, it's not really useful.  Especially on a Monster with everything as stated going against it.

I guess you could say that today’s monster was inevitable. We already had a spirit monster that destroyed all face-up monsters on the field in Dark Dust Spirit, so we needed a spirit monster that destroyed all face-down spells and traps. Enter Fenghuang. With a name like that, we have to get a little more background on it. Fenghuang comes from Chinese Legend and is a Mythological Beast. The Japanese name for it is Ho-o. Sound familiar? Fenghuang is the spirit equivalent to Sacred Phoenix of Nephthy’s which is also a Winged-Beast Fire monster that destroys spells and traps.

Here is the problem that I have with this card. Mobious the Frost Monarch does pretty much the same thing as Fenghuang except that it also destroys face-up cards including field spell cards. Mobious is not seeing play so why should we expect anything different from Fenghuang? It doesn’t even have a good attack for a level 6 monster with only 2100 attack points.

I usually try to say something positive about cards I review so I shall not disappoint you. If you tribute set Fenghuang, you can destroy your opponents set spells and traps without fear of being Effect Veilered, Solemned, or having a spell or trap chained to it if it was attacked and flipped face-up. That could be a good tactic against a T.G. deck that has not activated its continuous trap cards yet. You could use it with Soul Exchange and Treeborn Frog for some easy summons and use each turn. I guess you could even play this card in a spirit deck, but they are not top tier.

Our last card that the all mighty pojo has ordered us to review this week is Fenghuang. A rather interesting bird, Fenghuang is a Level 6, Fire/Winged Beast and is a Spirit monster. With 2100 ATK and 1800 DEF. Fenghuang's effect is like most other spirit monsters, that they cannot be special summoned, only normal or flipped face up. If you do normal summon or it gets flipped it face up, you can destroy all set spell and trap cards your opponent controls. Return this card to your hand during the endphase it was normal summoned or flipped face up. This card can win a few games if used at the right time. With 2100 ATK, it's a bit below what we are used to when it comes to 1 tribute monsters, but its effect makes up for it. Fenghuang's ability to wipe out all set cards in your opponent's backrow is pretty good, even if it gets caught in something like Bottomless Trap Hole. It combos well with Treeborn Frog, so you can wreck your opponent's back row over and over. Fenghuang's weaknesses are Divine Wrath, Skill Drain or just being stuck in the graveyard or deck in general. Looking for something new to try out, I suggest Fenghuang for getting rid of those pesky face downs.

Fun Friday Fact: Leonardo Da Vinci could write with one hand and draw with the other at the same time.

Spirit monsters have made a brief return with this card, Fenghuang!

Today’s card is a Level 6, Fire, Winged-Beast spirit monster. Now seeing as this card needs a tribute and returns to the hand at the end phase, this card needs an effect to compensate to the effect. Fortunately, it has one. When normal summoned or flipped face-up, you destroy all of your opponent’s set Spell and Trap cards. There’s a varient of Frognarchs that uses Dark Dust Spirit and Treeborn Frog to constantly destroy the opponent’s monsters. Fenghuang can be summoned first to clear the way for Dark Dust Spirit. They won’t solemn a Treeborn since it can just summon itself. So when you summon Fenghuang, you apply the pressure needed to force a solemn since they lose their backrow otherwise.

This format is considered to have a lighter backrow, so Fenghuang should probably be placed in the side deck unless you face someone with a potent backrow. Have a nice weekend everyone!

Traditional: 1.5/5 (tributes and backrows are too slow)
Advanced: 2.5/5 in generic, but 4.5/5 when using Treeborn Frog (you only need to summon it once to really psych them out)
Art: 5/5 (many colored pallet and nice pose)

Well, he has a great effect and in the right deck, could be a killer. I run a deck that includes Dark Dust Spirit, who would pair up perfectly with this guy. A Harpy Feather Duster effect is always good. The only drawback is that he returns to the hand at the end of the turn, so that hurts his reusability in most decks. Feng deserves his own deck, perhaps alongside of DD Spirit.
