Nintendo All-Stars, assemble!_Bowser_Primetime_Zion, IL

Tourney Date: 2/26/05

Place: Primetime Sportscards in Zion, IL

Format: Advanced

Entry Fee: $5

Prizes: TP for entering, store credit for 1st and 2nd, trophy for 1st

I know I said I'd stop doing these (as if people read them), but this is a special occasion. Primetime recently started playing predominantly Advanced tournaments, and this has really opened me up for ingenuity. Furthermore, this week was the first in which all five of the Nintendo All-Stars were present. Here's how the clan stacks up:

Yoshi as Yoshi (won a Nationals invite)

Jeremy as Luigi (top 4 at Regionals, no Nationals invite)

Josh O. as ??? (best Regionals finish: 9th, I think)

Me as Bowser (best Regionals finish: 17th)

Robbie as The duck from Duck Hunt (never been to Regionals)

What's more, the holy trinity of this store came back after having been gone for a looooong time: Garrett (Season 2 champ), Cody (Season 4 champ), and James. Garett didn't play, but the other two would figure prominently in the tourney results. And now, the deck:

40 cards

16 Monsters

3 D.D. Warrior Lady

2 Berserk Gorilla

1 D.D. Assailant

1 Airknight Parshath

1 Jinzo

1 Sinister Serpent

1 Breaker the Magical Warrior

1 Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning

1 Spirit Reaper

1 Tribe-Infecting Virus

1 Magician of Faith

1 Exiled Force

1 Magical Scientist

17 Magic

3 Metamorphosis

3 Scapegoat

1 Nobleman of Crossout

1 Smashing Ground

1 Swords of Revealing Light

1 Premature Burial

1 Painful Choice

1 Heavy Storm

1 Snatch Steal

1 Pot of Greed

1 Change of Heart

1 Giant Trunade

1 Mystical Space Typhoon

7 Traps

1 Dust Tornado

1 Raigeki Break

1 Bottomless Trap Hole

1 Call of the Haunted

1 Ring of Destruction

1 Torrential Tribute

1 Ceasefire

15 Fusions

3 Giltia the D. Knight

3 Dark Blade the Dragon Knight

3 Thousand-Eyes Restrict

3 Dark Balter the Terrible

2 Ryu Senshi

1 Dark Flare Knight

Robbie and I got there early (as usual). I bought the Assailant right before the tourney started, and Robbie and I got in a practice match that I won 2-1. Now for the fun...

Round 1

vs. Alex G. (Warriors)

Duel 1

This was a massacre. Everything he did, I had an answer for it. And so, in this rematch of last week's finals, perhaps I would prevail...

Me 8000---7800---7700---6100

Alex 8000---6300---4300---1100---600---300---0

Duel 2

It was a little closer, but then I drew Airknight.

Me 8000---6000---4800---4500

Alex 8000---6800---5700---4900---4400---100---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 2-0

Round 2

vs. Chris (Harpies)

Duel 1

He attacked my D.D. Warrior Lady with his Mirage Dragon, and that was the only damage I ever took.

Me 8000---7900

Chris 8000---5000---100---0

Duel 2

It was tough to win this one. I had to stall with Swords and Goats for a while before I could Snatch his Mad Dog and start smacking him with it. Then I took out his hand with Reaper, and that's all she wrote.

Me 8000---7800---7700---6900

Chris 8000---7700---5800---4200---4000---3700---3400---1400---1000---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 4-0

Updates

At this point, Robbie was floundering, Josh was doing so-so, and Jeremy and Yoshi were owning. It pretty much continued that way for the rest of the tourney.

Round 3

vs. Joey (Burn)

Duel 1

He got me down a lot with Lava Golem, but since he didn't get out any stall cards, I could just attack him freely with a 3000 beast. I think you know the rest.

Me 8000---6000---5000---4000---3000---2000---1000

Joey 8000---6700---3700---700---0

Duel 2

I decided not to side deck, just to see what happened. As it turns out, he didn't draw much this whole duel. It was just a matter of time.

Me 8000---7500---6000---4000---3200---3000

Joey 8000---4000---3000---2900---2800---1400---1100---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 6-0

Round 4

vs. Michael (CCWC)

Duel 1

This kid's deck was about as cookie-cutter as they come, and the sad thing is, he actually did fairly well at this tourney. Anyway, with this first duel, I just Snatched something and beat him with it for most of the game. He destroyed the Snatch, and I would have been in trouble were it not for a topdeck of Painful, followed by a summoning of BLS.

Me 8000---7200---5300---3400

Michael 8000---4500---5500---3600---4600---2700---3700---0

Duel 2

I really should not have won this. I got out a lock with 2 TERs, and I won somehow when I had 2 cards left in my deck to his 6 or so. What saved me? Giant Trunade and Tribe.

Me 8000---4600---2600---900---100

Michael 8000---7000---5000---3100---2600---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 8-0

Updates

Yoshi was 8-2 at this point, Robbie was out, Josh was out, and Jeremy was 9-3. Not bad, no?

Round 5

vs. Alex F. (Burn/Beatdown)

Duel 1

This kid's deck was okay, but he just didn't know how to play. I whipped him good in both duels.

Me 8000---6500

Alex F. 8000---6500---5600---1400---2400---0

Duel 2

In this game, his Mystic Plasma Zone benefited me way more than him. Why? 1 word: Jinzo. As soon as I summoned that, he couldn't touch me, even when he Booked it.

Me 8000---7500---7000---6200

Alex F. 8000---7500---3000---1600---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 10-0, 1st in group

And so, I made top 8 for the 10th time in a row. My quarterfinals opponent was a guy whom I expected to be using a completely different deck than what he actually used.

Quarterfinals

vs. Joseph M. (CCWC)

Duel 1

Instead of the crappy Water deck, he was running a cookie-cutter. Now what prompted him to make that decision, I wonder?

Me 8000---6400---4800

Joseph M. 8000---7000---5400---3800---2200---0

Duel 2

After having smacked him with Tribe in the first game, I smacked him with Jinzo in the second. The winning never ends, does it?

Me 8000---6500---5500

Joseph M. 8000---5600---3200---600---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 12-0

Updates

Unfortunately, the other two clan members (Yoshi and Jeremy) lost in the quarterfinals to Cody and Matt respectively. As for me, I was in the semifinals.

Semifinals

vs. Enrique (CCWC with Creator)

Duel 1

In this game I hit him with Ceasefire, Tribe, Jinzo, you name it. It was amazing.

Me 8000

Enrique 8000---7000---5400---3000---2200---0

Duel 2

Tribe and D.D. Assailant led the charge in an assault on his life points that ended in him waving bye-bye to the tourney.

Me 8000---7200---7100

Enrique 8000---6400---4700---3700---2100---500---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 14-0

Finals vs. Cody (CCC)

Duel 1

Wow. Cody comes back after having left for 4-5 months, and he gets to the finals the first time out. I expect nothing less from him; he is a champ, after all. Anyway, this duel went back and forth for a while. Goats were saving me from his attacks, my inability to draw any monsters were saving his. Then, at the end, I somehow got Balter and Jinzo out and won.

Me 8000---6300---7300---5400---4600

Cody 8000---6800---6000---4400---0

Duel 2

This was agonizingly close. At the end, he was at 1700 to my 3300. He Snatched my BLS and attacked Berserk and my last Goat token. Next turn, I drew the perfect card to end it: Meta. I summoned Sinister, brought out TER, sucked BLS, and that was it.

Me 8000---7200---5200---3300---2300---3300

Cody 8000---6000---4100---1700---0

Match: W 2-0

Overall: 16-0

And so, I won the 1st place trophy (my 5th in total) and $15 store credit, which I spent on a super rare Pot of Greed and an ultra rare Vampire Lord, giving me a total of 2. Here's a rundown of my tourneys in 2005.

1/2---1st place

1/15---top 4

1/29---top 4

2/5---top 8

2/12---top 4

2/19---2nd place

2/26---1st place

Finally, the props and slops.

Props

to Cody, James, and Garrett for coming again. Just isn't the same without you guys.

to Bill for having tourneys, even though he STILL doesn't use MANTIS.

to Meta for taking this deck all the way.

Slops: None.
