The Trouble With Tribbles

Kuriboh, a card that has been in this game for a very long time! This cute little fur ball ranks up among the Black Magician and Blue Eyes White Dragon as one of the more famous cards that seem to represent the anime and OCG or TCG in ads, books, posters, etc. Kuriboh first appeared in the early chapters of the manga. Back then it had no effect or support, and looked a lot more like Critter (Sangan) then the ball of fluff we know and love today.

There have been many incarnations of Kuriboh (art wise) throughout the history of the game. The original Kuriboh looked only a bit different from its manga counterpart, while the next Kuriboh alternate art was made to look more cute and anime-like. Then there’s the infamous and ultra rare “Angry Kuriboh” as many like to call it. Kuriboh gained new life when Hane Kuriboh (Winged Kuriboh) was introduced in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime series and what was not possible before is now a very viable concept! That’s right; today I’m going to be building a Kuriboh deck!

First I’m going to look at some special OCG promo cards that give these adorable creatures the fighting edge they deserve! As you all know, Kuribohs are meant to be used as very defensive monsters and can work as fine walls between you and your opponents attacking monsters. Let’s look into a card that will literally create a Kuriboh “Wall” on your field. This card is multiply.

Multiply
Magic - Quickplay
Sacrifice a face-up [Kuriboh], put a [Kuriboh Token] (Dark/Demon/Level 1/300/200) in all of the empty spaces in your monster card zone. (Kuriboh Tokens cannot be sacrificed for a sacrifice summon.)

Multiply, a very famous card to all fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime. This card helped Yugi defend against Kaiba’s powerful Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon back in Duelist Kingdom and was also featured numerous other times throughout the series, even appearing in Yami Bakura’s undead lock deck with the effect of being able to target “any DARK monster with 500 or less attack”. In the OCG however, Multiply can only target a face up Kuriboh on your side of the field. This makes Multiply a very specific support card, and it was the first card of its kind (aside from Scapegoat that is.)

Being a quick-play magic card Multiply can be set and used on an opponents turn if you want to be more careful or lure your opponent into using magic and trap removal just to chain it in response, wasting the cards to make your later magic and traps safe. To activate this card you must have Kuriboh face up on the field, so it may wind up being a dead draw most of the time (chances for drawing it and Kuriboh can be tricky). The tokens created with Multiply have no attack and cannot be sacrificed for a sacrifice summon. This basically makes them a huge wall to block your opponent’s attacks.

Goat control decks of the old meta game abused goat tokens with various magic and trap cards, Kuriboh tokens can have the same synergy with these goat control cards. You can play Enemy Controller and sacrifice a token to take control of an opponent’s monster with very little loss. You can also use Forced Transfer (Creature Swap) to give a weak Kuriboh Token to your opponent in exchange for one of there powerful monsters (even attacking the token if you shifted its battle position beforehand). Sudden Mutation (Metamorphosis) can be used to summon Thousand Eyes Sacrifice (Restrict) to the field and you can also use goat tokens with Hand of Nephytys or Exchange of Souls (Soul Exchange) to get out a big monster to the field fast.

The tokens also have the same weaknesses as there furry friends being prone to getting trampled by opponent’s monsters with the specific ability to inflict the difference in battle while the monster being attacked is in defense position. You also have to watch out for cards that will change your tokens into attack position like Enemy Controller or Zero Gravity; this will leave them in an unhealthy position. Besides that, Multiply is a solid Kuriboh support card for a fun Kuriboh deck. It won’t even work that often, but can carry a good amount of abuse on occasion.

Kuriboh Calling Flute
Magic - Quickplay
Add a [Kuriboh] or [Hane Kuriboh] from your deck into hand or special summon it to the field.

A card used by Yuki Judai in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime series, this card helped Judai summon his Hane-Kuiboh (Winged Kuriboh) to the field when he needed it most! Kuriboh calling flute is the second Kuriboh specific support card to come our way via. The newly released Premium Pack 9. Calling Flute is a really great way to get your Kuribohs from your deck to your hand, and being a quick-play card it can be very versatile.

You can set Calling Flute and wait to chain it to an opponent’s removal attempt, or quick play it from your hand immediately. Calling Flute can work in a number of circumstances because it can fetch you either Kuriboh or Hane Kuriboh (Winged Kuriboh). In most cases you will want to set the flute and use it on the defensive during the opponents turn. Flute can be good since its going to provide you with a defense one way or another. You can grab Hane Kuriboh to the field if your opponent has a field with multiple monsters on it, this will stop all battle damage and defend you. If your opponent has a high attack trample monster like Cyber End Dragon or Antique Gear Golem, and is ready to finish you off, go with the original Kuriboh and add it to your hand for zero damage upon discarding it.

This card can speed up the Kuriboh deck or any deck with Kuriboh’s in it but giving a defensive costless card that’s never a bad topdeck. Calling Flute will also thin your deck and get combo pieces for other Kuriboh based cards like Multiply or Wings of Evolution (Transcendent Wings)! This card being a quick-play adds even more to the fun because it becomes incredibly versatile and playable. As long as you have at least 2-3 of either Kuriboh in your deck I see no reason tom play this card. Think of it as the Calling Reinforcements (Reinforcements of the Army) for the furry Kuriboh kind.

THE DECK

After looking over these two support cards for our furry friend, let’s finally get cracking at building a Kuriboh deck! First things first, Kuribohs are very defensive monsters themselves, so we’ll need a good deal of offensive monsters to balance this out and make the deck viable. Adding staple cards like Magic Warrior Breaker and Twilight Zone Warrior Lady (D.D. Warrior Lady) should take up some of the space, and of course room for using about 3 of each Kuriboh! I like the idea of throwing some Death Caliber Knights in this specific deck. They can provide a good offense and when offered you’ll have your Kuribohs to save your life points.

Kuriboh is a DARK main-type and Hane Kuriboh is a LIGHT main-type, you can only guess what this means. Kuribohs are viable bate to summon Chaos Sorcerer! This should be very fast since Kuriboh can be easily searched from the deck and dumped into the cemetery. So this deck will be a sort of Kuri-Chaos!

Cry of the Living Dead (Call of the Haunted)
Tidal Wave (Torrential Tribute)
Sand Tornado (Dust Tornado)

Deck Destruction Virus can cripple your opponent’s strategies and will only cost you a Kuriboh or Kuriboh token. You can also abuse Sudden Mutation in this deck with the Kuribohs to summon Thousand Eyes out of your fusion deck. Other then that there are quite a few Kuriboh combos and a solid Aggro/Chaos build in this deck.

Well that’s all for today! Now that we’ve paid homage to everyone’s favorite fur ball I urge you all to go out and try this deck for yourselves! Defeating your opponent with an angry mob of Kuribohs can be quite the way to win a game. There are tons of combos that I haven’t even touched on, and some that aren’t yet discovered yet. Use your dueling knowledge to create your own perfect Kuriboh deck!

Until next time, Ciao!
