Mofox’s journey from
Newbie to the UK National Tournament.
A Newbie’s view on the New Banlist
March 27, 2006
Hi, everyone. This is
another break from my journey to offer a newbies opinion on
the much-debated new Banlist for April 2006.
Firstly the Banlist doesn’t concern me whatsoever. In the
current stage of my journey the Banlist has zero affect on
me whatsoever. The only problem is having to tweak my
already built decks to be compliant to the new advanced
format, a small annoyance but never the less my appetite to
play and hunger for duelling remains the same.
Ah the benefits of being new to the game.
Does this mean I am oblivious to the new Banlist? No. I
fully understand the decisions to put the cards where they
have been placed and I can fully understand the grievances
of some of the more competitive players in the game, but it
seriously doesn’t matter to me. Unless they banned Ojama
Trio and then I would be having words!
Lets take one point that is causing some serious debate –
Spirit Reaper remaining at 3.
Some people are outraged at this decision. My view is
EXCELLENT. I love facing Spirit Reapers with my Ojama Trio/Gyaku-Gire
Panda combo. If my opponent is foolish enough to leave a
reaper on the field for me to trample all over then by all
means go ahead. Plus if I add my Beast Soul Swap then I get
2 hits with my 2800 Trampler at that set Reaper. 5200 damage
in one turn, yes please. Why not abuse that Reaper further,
and activate my Spiritual Earth Art and bring back another
Panda from my Graveyard and attack again for another 2600
damage. How much damage is that now… 7800! Or I could’ve
used a Rescue Cat to bring 2 Pandas from my deck to the
field and smile at my opponent who thought he was safe with
his set Reaper.
Whether this combo is stable or likely to happen at a SJC is
irrelevant to me. As long as there is the potential for it
to be done then I will try and that is what is great about
this game and great about being a newbie. There are always
ways to counter every other card in the game. No matter how
broken they are claimed to be.
There is something though that I feel is important to say
and I would like to make one thing clear to all newbies out
there.
DON’T LET ALL THE DOOM AND GLOOM ABOUT THE NEW BANLIST PUT
YOU OFF FROM CONTINUING TO PLAY THIS GAME!
For those who are new to the Pojo Boards all you may be
reading at the moment is about how the game has been ruined,
how it will never be the same and how everyone should quit
and go play VS or MTG or something that is ultimately
better. By all means read other’s opinions, discuss your own
thoughts but at the end of it all make your own decision. I
have and I will still be duelling until I get to that
National Championships.
On another note I have been following the game long enough
to remember the last Banlist and all the fuss over that one.
The one thing that will stick in my memory was all the
predictions of which decks will be the next CC and which
will be Tier 1. What did we get, nothing that was predicted.
My prediction is the same will happen with this new Banlist.
People will try and predict the new CC that all duellists
will use, and what will actually happen will be something
totally different. What will happen? I don’t know. I could
make a prediction but why bother, its exciting not knowing
what all those creative minds out there will come up with
next. My advice to all newbies is to keep playing, keep
making decks, and keep coming up with original ideas but
most of all keep having FUN!
The Banlist is by far not the end of this game it is just
another chapter for us to learn more about this game. I mean
if it wasn’t for the Banlist I may not to have got to learn
how to play with Mirror Force in the New Advanced Format, or
see how 2 Nobleman of Crossouts or 2 Magician of Faiths
affect my decks. It’s all new stuff to me and I look forward
to learning more about the game.
Please Newbies if you are struggling with the new Banlist,
or just want to voice your opinions on it then please email
me I would be glad to help. No flaming or bashing please
from you non-newbies. Try to remember where I am coming from
as Newbie who has only ever online duelled, never traded and
never entered a tournament. My opinions can only be based on
my own experience of the game. Not everyone else’s, no
matter how much of an expert they are on the game.
My email address is mofox9@hotmail.co.uk email me for any
help or advice or even your opinions on my articles. I would
love to hear your opinions and if you have any suggestions
to improve them then let me know. I will reply to all emails
that are sent to me. Remember newbies no question is a
stupid question.
