(Fan Fiction)

February 16, 2006

Since I’m going through some writers block (seriously, I can’t think to write AT ALL) at the moment in terms of articles , I thought I’d just post up a sequel to where my last duel story fan-fic left off. Kinda hard to do since last time I pretty much killed the guy huh? Yeah, that’s what I thought, but I’ve got a dodgy way out of that. If you remember Jake got through into the insane asylum after witnessing the true face of his cloaked opponent and his deck was destroyed. So enjoy, “The Fallen” was well - received , so hopefully this will be the same.

Time is a conundrum unto itself. Both fluid and rigid, straight and curved. To experience time is to witness it’s effects upon yourself , to bask in the glory of age and youth, the intertwining dance that is the fragile and precious thing known as life. To live is to become a part of time, to die is to change time, to set time.

We all are given a very limited period of time in this universe, and what we choose to do with it marks us out for all of eternity. Most are cast aside into nothingness and forgotten, doing nothing substantial to impose upon memory. Essentially contributing nothing to the whole of existence. Other’s however, the somewhat fortunate few, play a far bigger role in the cosmos and use their limited time with us to make sure that what they do DOES matter, and DOES make a difference.

It is somewhat ironic that one of the greatest saviours of any generation, as with the majority of the most righteous of men , was so unknown to his public and considered insane, as often is the case of the truly noble, condemned by those they strive to protect. Realised or not, true uniqueness is forever rewarded eventually.

Outside of time is sheer force and chaos. Blazes of destruction and divine creation are in a constant gridlock, desperately trying to overcome each other whilst on the spiritual side of things lost souls, echoes of life ebb-away into nothingness and eternity coincidently. The magnitude of that outside time is impossible to comprehend. How can something exist without the passage of time? Surely to exist is to fell the effects of time? To be beyond time is truly godly. What is law for our universe is not necessarily so for the next.

Jake was a burnt out husk of the person he had once been. His skin scarred, his mind fractured, and his soul in pieces, shattered by the force of what he has seen.

“Under the hood…” he repeats whilst huddling foetally in the corner of his padded cell. “Under the hood…”

“Yeah , yeah, under the hood I know, I know….” remarked the somewhat-masculine Janine as she slid the cold turkey, and stale bread sandwich under the metal cat-flap of the cell door, taking care to ensure that at least one part of the miserable meal would end up off the plate as she hurled it across the ice-cold, tiled floor. “Crazy piece of charcoal…”

“Small-Fry given you hell again Janine?” beckoned the surly -Texan accent of Betty the receptionist, another lackingly-feminine worker at the asylum. “Sure as hell no he aint leaving here in a hurry.”

“I here that darling, dang cook’s as messed up as his face!” replied Janine cynically.

The two women were of 50 working at the Nasine Institute, a quarantined facility for the victims of severe physical and psychological trauma, promised to relatives as a “revolutionary breakthrough establishment, offering the finest of care and due attention for the most extreme cases, where their “well-trained” and “highly-regarded” professional staff will give a much -needed one-to-one approach to handling the variety of different cases presented to them.”
What the relatives in fact got for their money were 50 low-paid, often over-weight women, each given around 3 hours of training on their initiation day. These women were generally miserable as an occupation, most noticeably Betty and Janine, each one of the two most foul beings on the face of the Earth.

Janine was a roughly 20-something stone pop-idol wannabe with a drinking disorder as bad as her psychological state of mind. What Janine lacked in intelligence she compensated for with mouth. She could talk the hooves of a horse and have no idea what she was talking about, the kind of person so full of their own self importance that they believe whatever it is they say for lack of understanding about any sort of political issue. Their warped interpretation and incapacity to think about whatever the current political issue occurring at the time, always resulting in a mixture of prejudice, self -righteous dribble and what can only be described as racism. This offered some explanation as to the difficulty for Janine in understanding the trauma that Jake had undergone. That is partially the reason why she ridiculed him on a regular basis , her incapacity to come to terms with the fact that the babbling -charred body that was Jake was in fact another human life, forced to endure an eternal suffering. The other stimulus forcing Janine’s mistreatment of Jake was Betty. She was in awe of her.

Betty was much the same as Janine in both size and attitude with the exception that she was blessed with a very quick -wit, one she often chose to use to make herself feel superior, and one she developed to cope with the breakdown of her marriage through her husband’s countless unfaithfulness.

It was in fact Betty that had developed the cruel nick-name “Small - Fry” for Jake making reference to his comparatively small stature and charred appearance. Janine found this horrendously entertaining and was constantly trying to no avail to come up with a similarly effective derogatory name for their assigned case. It will probably remain unknown forever the reason why Janine pushed so hard to be like Betty. Both women were so out-casted even in Nasine that they were forced to spend the majority of their time isolated.

Meanwhile, inside Jake’s room , something was happening that was unsettling him more so than normal. An enormous yellow glow was beaconing him to move closer from within the inside of the cell. And orange light that became a swirl as Jake made his feeble approach towards it. From the outside of the cell the yellow under-glow could be seen underneath the door frame which shot out like flame from the bottom of the door , partially illuminating the dark corridor. From within the room a hurricane-like gust could be heard echoing around the walls. Jake ebbed forward, in doing so intensifying the swirl of the orange glow until it eventually resembles a Cyclone. The roar of this vortex caused commotion so that even the fat wenches at the bottom of the corridor managed to “run” to see what it was.

Jake stood in awe at the gaping fiery vortex that stood before him. Within it he could almost stare into the desperate reaches of space and time itself. What he saw he almost dismissed as a hallucination induced by his mental disorder, and would have certainly done so if it wasn’t for the feeling or reassurance that seemed to seep out of the portal like blood from a wound. What he didn’t know was that he was in fact staring beyond the fabric of time into that which was outside of time. Outside of dimension, and in essence, outside of reality as we know it. He was staring into a breach into the unknown.

The effect that the vortex had on Jake was quite astounding. Slowly he began to make sense of his obscured thoughts and regained his reasoning. Time became meaningless and the whole world stopped, completely stationary , and waited for him to adjust to what it was he was looking at. Time in standstill, everything waiting on him, and Jake couldn’t move. He stood and stared for what seemed like and could easily have been an eternity , just staring and watching. Taking it all in through this tiny window and the fires around roared openly in the darkness. Without warning a song could be heard in the air. The song of a bird deep in the distance. This brought Jake back to reality, as well as freeing time again in the process. Janine and Betty motioned their way forward exasperated, desperately fumbling at the keys trying to open the door. Betty roared at the cell door and banged on it with her fists.

“Open the door you little worm ! What’s going on in there !!”. She screamed upon doing this, the red-hot door scolding her hands. Dropping the keys for a moment Janine rushed to the aid of her idol.

Jake walked towards the vortex once more. The phoenix’s call getting louder with each step until eventually he was on the very edge of the boundary between the cell and the universe. He could hear the muffled cries of his two tormentors outside of the door. He’d been able to hear their taunts through the madness he’d endured. This only strengthened his resolve to do what he longed to do more than anything else right now, leap into the unknown. Bask in the glory of the cosmos. Jake looked around, what exactly had he to lose? Taking one running leap he hurled himself into the warp.

“We’re gonna get you for this worm !” Janine yelled at the scorching door. “Wait till you see what you done to Betty’s hands!”

Suddenly a deafening eagle’s screech could be heard throughout the whole of Nasine. The high pitch shattered the glass all around the complex and forced Janine and Betty to cover their ears and bow done, desperately trying to bury themselves from the noise. Following the colossal uproar came a fiery explosion that erupted the door off it’s hinges , incinerating the best part of the building in the process. Out of the rubble emerged Jake, surrounded by flame, engulfed by it. Consumed by it.

But instead of burn him further, the blaze appeared to have an opposite effect, slowly ridding him of his afflictions, until eventually he resembled the young man he once was, but different. The flame had done more than restore him, it had improved him to a point where he was better than ever before. He was stronger, faster, more open to his surroundings and more so. The fire that engulfed him slowly faded away until eventually all that remain was the burning glow that filled his eyes. In place of his clinically white Nasine clothes was some sort of dark jacket that felt warm to the touch and jeans likewise. This was definitely more than just fire Jake merrily thought to himself. He raised his hand and conjured up himself a ball of fire that seemed to float in front of him.

Jake found to his delight that he had complete dominion over the orb, and out of nowhere appeared a deck. His deck, the one that had saved him all those years ago. Jake couldn’t believe what was happening. Surely this can’t be real, surely he must just be going deeper into insanity.

“You have many questions young one…” a voice whispered from above. “Let me explain a few things….”
