NickWhiz1 Monday - Ring of Destruction

Today, after a series of =/-type weeks, we're starting up the new set, Pharaonic Guardian. This week is the top 5 cards that will make an impact on the English game (at least, I think that's what the theme is =/). Today's is Ring of Destruction, the best card in the set IMO, and of course, it HAS to be the 000 (Hobby) Secret Rare :/ (but hey, it's the first non-Monster to have this spot!)

Kaiba used this card in the anime during the Umbra/Lumis duel. Most of us were surprised when we saw it because it had the name Ring of Destruction (not Bell of Destruction as in the video games), and the grenades were edited out in the picture, replaced with fire (hey, a ring of fire is fine with me, it kind of makes it look cooler =/). So here it is, as if on cue.

On the surface, this is basically a singular monster removal card which advances the game, because neither player gets a direct advantage in Life Points (they both take the same damage). However, it's much more than that.

It's chainable to M/T removal.
It can destroy ANY face-up monster (except Jinzo :/)
It can be used to basically negate an attack.
It does direct damage.

Some really evil things to do with this card:

* Attack with a Goblin Attack Force (maybe doing 2300 damage), then blow it up. Your opponent just took 4600 damage!

* Destroy your opponent's Yata-Garasu with this card. It's only 200 damage, but your opponent's Yata is gone.

* Use in combination with Barrel Behind the Door. Your opponent would take damage for BOTH players. Or, use Trap of Board Erasing, and your opponent loses a monster, damage, and a card from their hand.

* Use Magic Cylinder on one of your opponent's monsters, then use Ring to blow it up afterwards. Double damage ^_^;;;

All in all, this is a very deadly card that you should be careful of. I believe this card single-handedly removes Lily as a threat, because, besides the fact you can blow it up for 400 damage, if you are dealing massive damage with this card to your opponent or yourself, it gives you less LP to use Lily's effect. Lily wasn't terribly good anyways, IMO =/

Don't bother getting more than 1 of these. When restrictions come out (probably in September =/), that's all you'll be able to play.

Score: 4.8 (I'd say staple material)
SomeGuy Monday - Ring of Destruction

Trap Card
PGD-000

Destroy 1 face-up Monster Card and inflict Direct Damage equal to the destroyed card's ATK to the Life Points of both you and your opponent.

Ring of Destruction is easily one of the best cards in the set. Right after Mirage of Nightmare I'd say.

And yes, it IS better than Magic Cylinder. Why's that? For the simple fact that it can chain to cards such as Heavy Storm, Harpie's Feather Duster, and Mystical Space Typhoon.

And don't worry about the recoil. Even though it can cost you the game at times, it's damage you were going to potentially take anyway. Usually not a big problem unless you're extremely low on life. Keep in mind that the damage happens simultaneously, so it is possible to cause a draw.

Burn Decks love this card, Beatdown Decks like it, and a fully pumped Bazoo the Soul-Eater despises it.

Rating: 4/5
SandTrap Finally, we can review some new PGD stuff that is actually worth out time! Goodie goodie...

Ring of Destruction
PGD-blah blah

Blah blah blah....etc. If you don't know what it does, you should be shot.

Well, this may very well be the most anticipated Trap card from across the seas since the release of Mirror Force and Call of the Haunted. RoD is a really good card. If a big monster like Bazoo or GAF is coming to pwn you, use RoD and get it out of the way. IMO the monster killing part of the effect alone would make me want to play it. It also comes with another effect, which could be seen as both good and bad. Each player takes LP damage equal to the ATK of the destroyed monster, so that means anywhere between 200-2500 damage with one card.

To some, it may be seen as a good thing. Attack with a GAF and do 2300, then use RoD to kill GAF and take another 2300 out of the opponent. With 2 cards, you knocked away 1/2 the opponent's LPs. Not too shabby.

On the other hand, this card can end up hurting you pretty badly. It reminds me of Injection Fairy Lily: Good if you can pay for it, horridly useless if you can't. If you're down to 1000 LPs with Ring set and the opponent attacks with a Witch/Sangan, well, you just lost.

And hey, if they use MST/Heavy Storm/HFD, you can chain with Ring. Good when the opponent has a monster out, sucks when only you have a monster out.

Here's an example of its usefulness: I went to a tournament Friday, and a friend named Jason who bought 6 boxes of PGD decided to run 1 Ring (even though he has 43265432 billion ;( ). He played an opponent who also used Ring. As the game went on, Jason kept getting pwned by a scrub. Near the end of the duel, Jason has less than 1000 LPs left. I don't remember, but if he had Ring set or if he topdecked Ring, it would have been totally useless, seeing as he wouldn't have been able to use it. On the other hand, the scrub he was playing topdecked his Ring, set it down, ended his turn, and he activates Ring for the game. Unfortunately, the scrub had chosen something like a Gemini Elf to win the game, when to his horror he realized that he himself was at only 1200 LPs. It went into sudden death, and Jason still lost to the scrub. Good job, Jason :P

The moral of the story is this: Don't be stupid when using RoD. If the scrub had only chosen his Hayabusa Knight sitting on the field...sigh...just be careful when using it, OK? =/

Rating: 4.5/5. Overall it is pretty good, but it does have that nasty drawback. Make sure to use it at the right time and you'll be set.
DuelMonster Monday - Ring of Destruction
Trap Card
PGD-000 - Secret Rare
Destroy 1 face-up Monster Card and inflict Direct Damage equal to the destroyed card’s ATK to the Life Points of both you and your opponent.

The new monster destroyer trap with built in double edge life point destruction that's soon to be restricted one per-deck. This card is best compared to Magic Cylinder, but has pros and cons that make it more versatile but also more risky. Magic Cylinder will only prevent the attack and do equal damage back to the attacker, where as RoD can be used to prevent and destroy an attacking monsters, or used after attacking to do some extra damage. It very playable because you don't have to wait for an attack to chain it, just as long as there's a face-up monster you can activate it. You can also activate as it's being destroyed in a chain with cards like Heavy Storm and HFD making it not so bad to wait around for a good monster to take out if you can activate it at (almost) any time.

The worst part of course is that it inflicts damage to both players, so if it's late game and your LP are low it can be nearly useless, but you can combo this card with Barrel Behind The Door which will basically doubles the damage done to your opponent and leave you unharmed and Trap of Board Eraser which will leave you unharmed and force your opponent to discard a card from their hand. The best thing about this card is it can counter other monster removal or a monster that's about to be destroyed...say your opponent plays TttD on your Gemini Elf, chain with RoD and they discarded a card (for cost of TttD) and took 1900 damage. Or even better, if your opponent gets a Lava Golem on your field you can destroy it before it causes more damage.

This card is sure to be a near staple in anybody's deck that can get a hold of it. It was rated 15 out of top 100 Japanese cards last year and will hopefully do as well over here. It fits in anything from Beatdown, Control, Burn, and I'd even use it in my stall/chaos deck. When more powerful cards like Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon come out it can become insane...Attacking for 4500 and then flipping RoD to do another 4500 will be game. It's also good to use against Yata and Lily, it will destroy them and won't do too much damage to yourself. (Note that RoD has to be activated BEFORE they pay the 2000 LP to raise her ATK, helps just to keep it from hurting you later).

I've thought of trying it with Mucus Yolk (This card may attack your opponent’s Life Points directly. Each time this card inflicts battle damage to your opponent’s Life Points, increase the ATK of this card by 1000 points during your next Standby Phase. The ATK increase lasts as long as this card remains face-up on the field.) To see how high I can get it's ATK then waiting for my opponent to "try" to destroy it and then flipping RoD to do a bunch of damage, but if not combined with Barrel Behind The Door and Trap of Board Eraser it will hurt myself too much.

This card is almost a blessing (if I believed in such a thing) to us US players to be put into this set, I would have expected it to come out as a hard to get promo or a TP Ultra Rare. It is a very sweet card that can help the current and future environment.

Ratings:
Casual: 4.0
Tourney: 4.0
ArtWork: 2.5 - The ring used to be lined with grenades, now it's flames, I guess it's before and after shots. I also think the Secret foil effect makes it look too unclear to really look cool.

Ring of Destruction
Trap Card
PGD-000
Destroy 1 face-up Monster Card and inflict Direct Damage equal to the destroyed card’s ATK to the Life Points of both you and your opponent.

Some never thought Ring of Destruction would have been in Pharaonic Guardian. It was *ALMOST* a shot from the dark when it was announced as the Retail Secret Rare. Most believed that the external Secret Rare would have been Vampire Lord, but, the idea was instantly scratched when a scanned picture of this card started to arise. Hehe, even though some hopes died, it didn’t matter. We were, in reality, getting a MUCH better card (sorry folks, it’s true).

Ring of Destruction’s effect is simple to understand. Destroy one monster, and both you and your opponent take damage equal to that monster’s attack value. In the long run, this card is amazing. It’s chainable to the widely played MST, excellent monster removal, and, great for that extra needed LifePoint Damage. Take note that Ring of Destruction (RoD) is a widely played card in JPN, and considered a staple in every deck. It has the extreme the potential to replace Magic Cylinders, and to most Players, it already has. Every good player takes into consideration that Cylinders isn’t that great of a very good card anymore. Magic/Trap removal really hurts the way it’s played. Therefore, due to chain-ability and a better effect:

Ring of Destruction > Magic Cylinders.

Play it and you’ll see how good it is ;D. Only 2 problems I can think off the top of my are:

-Like all traps, it useless when Jinzo is on the field
-If your low on life, its not a very good idea to use this card.

Casual: 4.5/5
Tournament: 4.5/5
