Constructing the Mystic Swordsman Deck-By Kyle

Hello, all and welcome to my second deck construction. Sorry I’ve been absent for so long, but I’ve been rather busy studying for finals, playing Pokémon and Magic, and working on my own Mystic Swordsman deck. But finals are over and I’m back!

Purpose:

The goal of the Mystic Swordsman deck is to use Lv. 6 to get your opponent into a Mystic Swordsman lock. Your opponent will have to summon the monster they draw face up to get out of the lock. Meanwhile, you can keep summoning monsters.

Strengths:

The Mystic Swordsman deck has TERRIFIC facedown control. A standard Mystic deck also packs cards to put your opponent’s cards facedown such as Book of Moon. They can also use Warriors and Warrior support, simply because they are Warriors themselves.

Weaknesses:

This deck is very hindered by lots of Face-up monsters. Scapegoat is another bane of this deck, effectively holding off the Mystics (though Sheep tokens are easy to kill for Lvs. 2 and 4, facilitating a level-up). Heavy beatdown also cripples this deck.

Monsters:

You obviously want to start with the Swordsman line itself. It is my personal belief that the optimal Swordsman line is a 2/3/2 line. Note that this is THE ONLY Level family in which this line is acceptable.

Swordsman support is important, too. 2 copies of Marauding Captain facilitate the summoning of Lv. 4.

Command Knight gives your warriors a nice boost.

Tsukoyomi acts as a reusable Book of Moon, so 2 is a good idea.

The monster “staples” are Sangan, Breaker, Tribe, and S. Serpent.

Magician of Faith is also effective. It allows you to reuse Level Up!, Book of Moon, etc.

Spells:

We’ll start with the unholy trinity of Yu-Gi-Oh: Pot, Graceful, and Duo.

This is a Level Monster deck; run 3 Level Up!

This deck runs quite a few Warriors, so Reinforcements of the Army should be used.

To force Monsters into defense, run 2 Book of Moon. Heavy playtesting has revealed that with Tsukoyomi, Magician of Faith to reuse Book of Moon, and the next card, 3 is unnecessary.

2 Swords of Concealing Light is also useful. It forces mass disruption and is decent stall.

Premature Burial, Snatch Steal, Heavy Storm, and MST are mainstream and belong in nearly every deck.

Finally, a single The Warrior Returning Alive can bring back cards such as Marauding Captain, which is better off Normal Summoned.

Spells this deck DOESN”T run:

Smashing Ground is unnecessary because of the infrequency that your opponent will control face-up monsters.

Lightning Vortex is worthless for the same reasons.

Nobleman of Crossout WOULD be effective, but you want your opponent to control Face-down monsters to use Lv. 6.

Traps:

The Trap line is none too shocking. 2 Bottomless Trap Hole eliminate creatures that you would rather not have to deal with.

Torrential Tribute and Mirror Force eliminate any Attack-Position monsters to lesson the load on your Books, Swords, and Tsukoyomi.

Ring of Destruction is Game-ending and belongs in many decks.

Call of the Haunted shouldn’t be questioned.

Final Count:

Next time I’ll fix a Mystic Swordsman deck. That is, if any readers out there are original enough to stop using the Chaos long enough to try something new.

-Kyle
