There’s something unsettling about the notion that Zur has just been levitating around Dominaria since the end of the Ice Age. And also, they probably could have used his help the last time the Phyrexians invaded.

He seems to have been putting a lot of effort into perfecting his enchantment synergies, because this version is more or less the finisher that his previous version needed. Zur the Enchanter has often been used as a prison card, and the downside to prison cards is that you sometimes have to resort to running the opponent out of their library and/or patience as a win condition. The Eternal Schemer upends that, and perhaps even pushes a much more aggressive type of Zur deck. And don’t forget that his activated ability also saves its target from Disenchant effects by making his static ability apply to it. I won’t pretend to be an expert on which version of Zur should be your commander in those sorts of situations, but I can state confidently that this card will be a casual favorite.

Constructed: 2.5
Casual: 4
Limited: 3 (maybe optimistic, but he goes well with Sagas; I’m not sure exactly how often that is likely to come together)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 4.5

Much like his original outing, Zur cares about enchantments. This time, though, he weaponizes them more readily, animating them to turn sideways and also buffing them as a tribe. Considering we’re coming off of a recent set doing a lot with enchantment creatures, Zur represents a surprisingly scary threat even if you don’t have to activate his ability. He seems like an interesting puzzle to solve with all of the enchantment support in his colors, and I can see formidable enchantment decks coming off of his back. He’s good at offense and defense, even though his 1 power makes him less ideal on his own as a finisher, and I suspect his talents may well find a home somewhere.

Constructed: 3
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 3.25 (probably wants to draft lots of Sagas or other value enchantments)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 4
