Yugi week continues with a card that made its appearance in the Pyramid of Light movie, Sorcerer of Dark Magic.

Sorcerer of Dark Magic can only be summoned by tributing 2 Level 6 or higher Spellcaster monsters. The summoning condition in 2017 is easy enough to fulfill, but there is no real meta contender that can meet this requirement. During either players turn, you can negate the activation of a Trap card and destroy it. This is not once per turn, oddly enough, meaning you can negate your opponents Traps that are not Counter Traps while you can play all the Trap cards your heart desires. Traps might not be as good in 2017, but the good ones are really worth negating. Sorcerer of Dark Magic must be face-up to activate and resolve the Trap negation effect, but I don’t think that will be an issue.

Looking at this card, if Konami prints the right archetype, this can see meta play. The card is powerful with its effect and 3200 ATK is hard to get over.

Baneful

This card is like a Jinzo with stronger stats that allows you to use your own trap cards.  Except the requirements to summon this card is just ridiculous.  It’s sad to see a card with cool artwork and beastly stats to be reduced to just a collector’s item.  Tributing two monsters is already extremely difficult, and moreover, they have to be LV6+ and they have to be Spellcasters.  And you can do all that work just for this card to be destroyed by monster effect or spell card.

This is what the card should’ve been.

Sorcerer of Dark Magic
LV12 DARK Spellcaster 2800 3200
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set.  Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by Tributing 1 Level 6 or higher Spellcaster-type monster, and cannot be Special Summoned from the Graveyard until that requirement is initially met.  The effects of your opponent’s Trap Cards are negated and the opponent can only activate 1 monster effect per turn.

Sorcerer of Dark Magic, also reviewed but once, I believe at the time of the original Yugioh movie, as it was a promo from that little set, also wasn’t the most playable of cards, despite being strong and being able to do some nifty tricks.  This card can ONLY be Special Summoned by Tributing two Level 6 or higher Spellcasters on your side of the Field.  Not to sound like a broken record, but as referenced twice before, this card has actually become more playable with all the Spellcaster support over the last handful of years.  3200 attack is beastly, and he has built in protection, being able to optionally negate the activation of Traps and destroy them.  It may not be the most feasible card to play, even in a dedicated, hardcore Spellcaster build, but I wouldn’t fault anyone for trying.
