In various situations, there may be a question of whether you should put your trust in the exuberance and energy of youth, or the practice and experience of the older. Many team sports fans are biased towards the former, even as most team sports coaches aim for a combination of the two. Warriors – and wizards, since we’re talking about Magic here – tend to get better with age, and though we don’t know exactly who this character is or where he’s from, Seasoned Pyromancer is a generally-useful card with all-rounder abilities that used to be rare in red and stand out even now. He works equally well in graveyard decks and in decks that just like Mulldrifter-style cards (unlike Thrill of Possibility and such, you draw cards even if you have no cards in hand when he comes into play). He even fills your table with tokens at a rate that rivals some of the high-tier white versions of the effect.

That’s not to trash his younger self – the spellslinger archetype definitely wants things with direct synergy, and the younger version enables very explosive plays. But if you’re going midrange to Big Red, you need something that’s going to be useful regardless of what the contents of your hand are, and that’s Seasoned Pyromancer to a tee.

Seasoned Pyromancer is definitely a card that plays better than he reads, turning unnecessary cards into more cards (and friends) and even just drawing you two cards outright in a topdeck scenario. For red decks, a color notorious for running out of gas in a long game, being able to get a body and additional cards at the same time is pretty valuable. And in a pinch, he can turn himself into two more bodies out of your graveyard. While nothing alone reads as phenomenal, he’s a card that’s more than the sum of his parts, providing a healthy amount of stats and card advantage for a reasonable price. He’s a decent insurance policy for red decks in a late game and can help you get across the finish line, and that’s all you can ask for at times.
