This is the kind of card that reads simply enough, but then turns out to have some nuances to its play in practice. It seems like a solution to the old dilemma of whether you should burn the creatures or burn the opponent (which is actually helped more by remembering to target creatures when you need to attack, and the opponent late in the game). It’s easy to miss that it also affects combat damage, making blocking more dangerous than usual; slightly easier to miss that it means literally any source, as if Masticore needed any more help; and easier again to miss that it affects all players, making combat in general much more dangerous than usual! I think this was part of why it never did too much in tournaments, but it remains a fun way to inject some chaos into a casual or multiplayer meta.

Repercussion is a pretty unusual spell, a symmetrical effect that magnifies the effects of burn effects and combat damage by reflecting all damage done to creatures to their owner. While symmetrical, remember that you’re the one who knows it’s coming out, and you can always stack the deck in your favor with lots of burn spells or first strike creatures to make sure each hit is one that swings things in your favor. It’s a fairly efficient rate for this ability, as well…three mana is maybe a step slightly more expensive than ideal, but it’s still able to come out as early as turn 2 and throw things into chaos. It’s not an ability for the faint of heart, but if you know what you’re getting into, it’ll pay off splendidly.

Constructed: 2.5 (Legacy isn’t massive on decks that this fights off, and it’s pretty perilous)
Casual: 3
Limited: 3 (high risk, high reward, but it can help make stalling less appealing)
Multiplayer: 3.25
Commander [EDH]: 3.75
