Hello Pojo Fans,

Number 79: Battlin’ Boxer Nova Kaiser is the Xyz I mentioned during the Dempsey review and is our Throwback Thursday choice this week.

Generic Rank 4 for the archetype, Kaiser has the same ATK as Dempsey, though he gains ATK for each material attached. It may only be 100ATK per material, but that makes him 2500ATK upon Xyz Summon. As expected with that first ability, Kaiser is also able to attach a Battlin’ Boxer from the hand or grave to itself, thus gaining 100 more ATK, also providing Dempsey with something to detach for targeting protection.

When Kaiser is destroyed by your opponent and it has materials you can end up with a massive Special Summon of Battlin’ Boxer monsters. It all depends on how many materials Kaiser had attached when destroyed. Kaiser can be an immediate recovery as long as it is destroyed with materials. Even getting just two monsters back off of Kaiser replaces what you used to summon him and sets you up for another Extra Deck play. You want to have at least one Promoter and Uppercut ready for Kaiser when it is destroyed by your opponent’s card effect to maximize your potential recovery.

Battlin’ Boxer Nova Kaiser may not search and offer targeting protection like King Dempsey, but he can set up your bigger Xyz monsters the require several materials or a Rank-Up Spell to get to. Your opponent will likely destroy your monster(s) sooner or later, and Kaiser will make them pay if they destroy him, even if you only have two materials attached, if they are the right ones (Uppercut and Promoter).

Throwback Thursday this week brings us to one of the earlier Battlin’ Boxer Xyzs in the game, Number 79: Battlin’ Boxer Nova Kaiser.

Nova Kaiser is a Rank 4 FIRE Warrior Xyz with 2300 ATK and 1600 DEF. Basically the same as King Dempsey minus 200 DEF. 2 Level 4s to make gives you yet another generic Xyz. It gains 100 ATK for each material it has, which isn’t a big boost, but you can at least attach a Battlin’ Boxer from your hand or grave to this as material once a turn. The only use of these materials is upon destruction by an opponent’s card and being sent to the graveyard, you can revive Level 4 or lower Battlin’ Boxers up to the number of materials this had on field, giving you some field presence once again after the opponent gets rid of it. Requiring it to be destruction and sending it to the graveyard might be outdated, but it’s better than nothing. Number 79 isn’t too amazing, but it’s fine for the archetype. It can get some alright ATK boosts from its effect and the swarming upon destruction can come up, and thankfully we got a Number C monster to go with this now.

Throwback Thursday brings us the predecessor of Battlin’ Boxer’s new boss, the little-known Number 79: Battlin’ Boxer Nova Kaiser, a Rank 4 FIRE Warrior Xyz monster, only used by Alito in a Japan-exclusive game. Nova Kaiser has generic materials of any two level 4 monsters, so Battlin’ Boxer (as well as many other archetypes) can make it easily. Nova Kaiser’s stats are a tad below the top but still decent, with 2300 attack and 1600 defense.

Nova Kaiser gains 100 attack for each Xyz material it has, so realistically it’ll usually have 2500 attack by default, matching the top dog Utopia. Its first effect, a soft once per turn, puts it slightly above, as it’ll let you attach a Battlin’ Boxer from your hand or Graveyard to Nova Kaiser as material. Nova Kaiser’s last effect triggers when it’s destroyed by your opponent’s card effect while it has material, letting you Special Summon a level 4 or lower Battlin’ Boxer from your Graveyard for each material Nova Kaiser had. The idea is for Nova Kaiser to continuously grow in attack and punish your opponent for destroying by bringing back all of its Xyz materials, ready for follow up. The big problem, of course, is that Nova Kaiser itself doesn’t do anything aside from have decent attack for a Rank 4, and as we’ll see, Battlin’ Boxer’s bosses are still quite depressing. If you can somehow get a Rank-Up Magic (not very easy given Promoter’s lock) the story is very different, but for now that is a pipe dream.
