Mother Spider
– #SOVR-EN019

If you have only Insect-Type monsters in your Graveyard, you can send 2 face-up Defense Position monsters your opponent controls to the Graveyard and Special Summon this card from your hand.

Surprisingly few cards with Mother in the name starts our Mother’s Day lead-up week. Mother Spider is a Level 6 Dark Insect-type monster with 2300 Atk and 1200 Def. It can be Normal Summoned, but there are better Insects with higher Atk to do so. They Special Summon option gets this mother out of the hand by sending 2 Face-Up Def position monsters from your opponent’s field to the grave. Sending is better than destruction as far as the opponent is concerned. It’s also better than tributing as the Diabolos cards have taught us. The problem is that you must have only insects in your grave to even consider Special Summoning this. Furthermore, Link Monsters can’t be in Def so this will never work on them. I wish Mother Spider said “up to two” because then at least it would be as easy as a Kaiju (except for the Def position part). After you’ve summoned her, she doesn’t do anything but be a beater. No protection for her babies, no piercing to take out other Def monsters. Mother Spider at least has good artwork for the binder, for a spider.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Mother Spider starts off our Mother’s Day week at Pojo CoTD.

Sending 2 face-up monsters that your opponent controls to the grave to Special Summon a monster of your own and keep it is a great effect, but there are some catches. One, only Insect monsters in your grave limits this to Insect-based strategies only, hurting this card ALOT. Two, the monsters you send have to be in defense position. Zero Gravity can solve this, but it’s a trap, so you’ll need to set up this move, slowing your play even more. Three, Mother Spider is only a 2300ATK monster, while the Kaiju monsters are easier to use. You can’t spin Link monsters into defense, so you may be left with a dead card until your opponent has monsters able to be put in defense. “Send to the grave” has an advantage against “destroy”, so Mother Spider has that going for it.

The defense position requirement they could’ve kept, and two monsters to keep yours is good as well, it is the Insect-only requirement, as well as the ATK that hold this card back. 2600ATK and no restriction on types in your grave would have made this card much better. If you use only Insects, then this card is a legitimate option. For everyone else, it’s a dedicated type-only card.

With Mother’s Day coming up, we decided to do a Mother-themed Week. Also, do me a favor whoever reads this and tell your mom that you love her, she has probably done so much for you and you never know when you won’t be able to say it to her again. Moms are the best, in real life that is. When it comes to Yu-Gi-Oh, well let’s look at some of the Mother cards starting with Mother Spider.

Mother Spider is a Level 6 DARK Insect with 2300 ATK and 1200 DEF. Solid stats for a Level 6, DARK is a promising Attribute, and Insect is a well supported type, though the support isn’t the strongest. When in your hand, if you only have Insects in your GY, you can send two face-up Defense Position monsters your opponent controls to summon this from the hand. That was the theme of the Spider archetype I believe, making your opponent’s monsters curl up into DEF mode. Now, to be honest, that isn’t terrible. Clearing out two monsters the opponent has is nice, only sucks that Link Monsters cannot exist in Defense Position. If you play a deck that is based on battle position and can get multiple monsters to enter Defense Mode, Mother Spider should come out easily. It is a nice card with some potential, hopefully we get something that makes good on that potential in the future.

Mother’s Day week?  Mothers definitely deserve recognition, but they deserve a week of better cards too (though it isn’t their fault) the limited not so great cards in the game that actually possess mother in the name.  Insects can be a viable Deck, and they have loads of support out there.  One big problem with Insects is, they don’t all strive to do the same thing.  Here, we have a Dark, Level 6 Insect, with just 2300 attack.  Just shy of a normal standard one Tribute.  But she can be Special Summoned by Tributing two of your opponent’s face-up defense Monsters to the Graveyard.  As far as a mother theme goes, she doesn’t really do anything motherly.  She doesn’t add any protection, her effect can only let her Special Summon herself from the Hand.  There are Insects out there worth playing.  This isn’t one.
