Why do we have a 1/4 creature with the fight ability (activity?) word in Ixalan? I’m guessing a part of it is just because we can, but I think Atzocan Archer does offer more than just a footnote in Magic history. Consider this: what is green’s usual answer to a creature with low stats but a powerful ability, like Azure Mage? To go bigger, hopefully fast. But that often means falling behind in the card advantage race – and that’s before you even get into the problem of that strategy falling apart when you find yourself facing down a Goblin Sharpshooter with a Basilisk Collar. Atzocan Archer is obviously less powerful than Shriekmaw or Fiend Hunter, but he gives you a much more comforting out against the Dark Confidants of the world compared to “just hope he doesn’t make them draw anything good”.
