Mad Mauler – #DIFO-EN013

This card’s name becomes “Plaguespreader Zombie” while on the field or in the GY. If this card is in your GY: You can target 1 Level 6 or higher monster you control; reduce its Level by 2, and if you do, Special Summon this card, also the player who Summoned it cannot Special Summon monsters, except Zombie monsters, while this card is face-up in the Monster Zone. You can only use this effect of “Mad Mauler” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Mad Mauler starts off a Zombie-themed week and the first week of August for us. Been a bit since there was some good Zombie support.

Mauler is another Zombie-Type that imitates Plaguespreader Zombie: same Level, Type, Tuner, and takes its name. The difference here versus the original is that you don’t need to stack a card on top of the deck for Mauler, you just need another monster on the field that’s Level six or higher. That may be easier said than done considering the abundance of Link and Rank monsters, but Zombies can pull this off pretty easy, as well as Eldlich. Special Summon ability like Plaguespreader, however, Mauler won’t banish itself after it leaves the field. A reliable way to get a Tuner on the field for a strategy that does a lot of Synchro Summoning is a great addition to the deck, especially when it should be able to make typically a Level 6 or 8 Synchro Monster from Mauler using its effect (Level 6 becomes 4, 8 becomes 6) where many Zombie Synchros need Plague as part of the summon. Locking you into Zombie monsters ensures this doesn’t get splashed around into too many decks, though with an easy Special Summon ability like it has, I could see this going into many decks just as a way to potentially Synchro Summon. Virtual World use Level 6 and higher monsters, Eldlich as previously mentioned is a Zombie and the monster you always want on the field.

Mad Mauler is a great addition to Zombie archetypes everywhere. A new form of an old favorite, it gets the job done for your Synchro Summoning, even if its effect could be looked at as “worse” than Plaguespreader Zombie.

Zombies are taking over CotD this week by starting with their new Tuner: Mad Mauler.

Mad Mauler is a Level 2 DARK Zombie Tuner with 400 ATK and 200 DEF. Poor stats of course, but being a DARK Zombie Tuner is great at least. This card’s name becomes Plaguespreader Zombie while it’s face-up on the field or in the graveyard, so you can access some of those old Zombie Synchros like Revived King Ha Des, Doomkaiser Dragon, and Archfiend Zombie-Skull. While this is in your graveyard, you can target a Level 6 or higher Zombie you control to reduce it’s Level by 2 and Special Summon this from the graveyard, but while it’s face-up in the Monster Zone, the player that summoned it can only summon Zombies from the Extra Deck. The revival effect is nice, reminds me of Level Eater, letting you help make some of your Synchros. They’ll have to be Zombies, but there’s alright Zombie Synchros out there you can use this for. Hard once per turn on this effect, which is perfectly fine. Mad Mauler is another good Zombie Tuner to have for the Zombie arsenal, as it helps make your Synchros and put Zombies in the graveyard to revive. Fine card.

Happy August y’all.  We open this week with Plaguespreader Zombie 2.0 aka Mad Mauler.  Zombie, Tuner, Level 2, with undesirable yet irrelevant stats at 400/200 here.  So this little guy is a setup and combo card to assist in your Extra Deck plays, as is more common for Themes these days.  This becomes PZ while on the Field, gaining the benefits that come with it, and allows you to Target a Level 6 or higher Monster (not Zombie, but any Monster) of yours and decrease its Level by 2.  Successfully doing so lets you Special Summon this, from your Hand, and we always appreciate a free Special Summon.  You’re locked into Special Summoning only Zombies…though for a twist, not just the Turn you use that Effect, but for the entirety this card remains on the Field.  Which I find moot, as this card is likely leaving the Field that Turn anyway.  Let’s see here…if you do Level 6, that gives you a Level 4 and a Level 2 for a Level 6 Synchro (assuming that’s all you have).  You won’t be able to XYZ with this card, at least not using this Effect, but you could still Link off it.  I don’t like that it can’t be ANY Monster, but it should still set you up for a nice drop of a fairly big Monster from the Extra Deck.

Art:  3.5/5  Meh, I mean, I get it, it’s kinda creepy, but nothing here strikes me as particularly interesting.
