This card was 5th on my Top 10 list.

Ledger Shredder is one of those cards that looks largely innocuous, but it plays a lot better than it looks. It’s a two-mana creature with evasion and a growing body, and it’s a body that grows surprisingly fast under the right conditions thanks to some key word choices. If an opponent casts their second spell, bird triggers. If players get into a counterspell war, bird triggers. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to get this massive, and you can easily take advantage of its looting to set up future plays. It’s maybe not the flashiest card, but it’s more than punched above its perceived weight for all of 2022, earning spots in decks across all formats as a cheap threat that presents a ticking time bomb for just playing the game.

Constructed: 4.5
Casual: 4
Limited: 4 (may not trigger as often here, but it’s an efficient, evasive body)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander: 3.5

Earlier this year, I had a memorable encounter with Ledger Shredder while playing Australian Highlander. This guy more than holds his own in formats like that, with the most powerful cards in Magic, and for a simple reason: he gives you more than one advantage for things that a lot of decks will be doing anyway. Those strings of spells are also easier to do in big formats with low mana curves, and the fact that he also triggers when opponents do cast spells puts him over the top. Although he’s costed well for 1v1 competitive formats, I would keep him in mind for the likes of Commander, too – more opponents means more triggers, and although it also means more removal spells, he starts with three toughness. And I think there are some Commander metagames where you can never really have too many card-drawing effects!
