— from the Völsunga Saga, translated by Roger Lancelyn Green in Myths of the Norsemen

If you play Standard, you may be glad to see Throne of Eldraine rotate. I don’t play Standard, and so I associate Eldraine more with flavor, folklore, and emotionally-affecting images. Korvold is particularly interesting to me: I always associate him with Fafnir, though like many of Eldraine’s cards, he feels like he could be the main character in a fairy tale you heard once and don’t quite remember.

He is also what I like to call a one-card combo – it might seem almost too easy to have a payoff and an easy way to repeat the action on the same card, though you could also look at it as saving space in your deck for other things. This is particularly important in Commander, where you might have three opponents’ worth of answers aimed at part of a combo. Not to mention the strength of combos and interactions that use your general; it seems that if you give Magic players any kind of help setting up a combo or interaction, they’ll take it!

Constructed: 2/5
Casual: 3/5
Limited: N/A (he comes from the Eldraine Brawl decks)
Multiplayer: 4/5
Commander: 4/5

One of the Eldraine Brawl legendaries, Korvold was meant to pair well with food. He seems to have worked with other things, thanks to him being a repeatable sacrifice outlet that does rude things in a long game and ekes out stupid amounts of value. He can get very big if left unanswered, and while he demands increasing amounts of tribute, his effect is still a vicious amount of value (even if the thing isn’t sacrificed to Korvold himself). He definitely has a lot of merriment, even if he’s a bit slow and cumbersome for Constructed play.

Constructed: 2
Casual: 4.5
Limited: N/A (wasn’t available outside of his deck)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander: 4.25
