There’s a reason I get starry-eyed every time we review one of Jhoira’s cards – well, several reasons, but it’s amazing how each time around, she seems to enable an entirely different powerful archetype. In Dominaria United, it’s some sort of variation on the old Tinker deck, or maybe some kind of “slow Affinity”, where you throw progressively bigger and bigger artifacts at the opponent until you win. And honestly, she escalates pretty fast if she stays in play. Even one turn later, opponents could be facing something dangerous or game-changing (check the kinds of artifacts that Stax uses in bigger formats), and the only real downside is that they have to start in your hand. And even that is far from destroying her chances, given her colors.

I wonder if anybody’s planning to do a Commander night where all three of Jhoira’s cards/decks face off against each other. I’m not sure it’d be a good idea for me to be a spectator of that – my heart might give out!

Jhoira’s third outing is an interesting one…and a very scary one, potentially. She starts accruing counters and bringing in artifacts the turn after she comes in (or the turn she comes in, with haste), and there are plenty of ways to turn her into a comical snowball. She’s a bit ponderous to be played fairly, but a combo piece like this one needn’t be fair, and not requiring any additional resources to activate means she can start dumping things at lighning speed. I’d keep an eye on Jhoira…she’s not a horrible body on top of her potentially scary cheating effect, and decks able to make space for her to do her thing will rarely be left wanting.

Constructed: 3.5 (I think her deck might take a bit to get going, but this is a potentially scary card with time to do her thing)
Casual: 5
Limited: 2.5
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 4.25
