Guided Passage is one of those cards that seems like it should be good: three mana, three cards. The issue is that your opponent decides what you’re getting, and outside of Special Friend Favors, you’re going to likely get what they perceive to be the weakest cards of your deck. Still, a 3-for-3 isn’t awful intrinsically; you get at least a land and a creature, which can still make for fun, and the decks that desire quantity over quality will find Guided Passage to be a perfectly functional deal.

Constructed: 1 (even in powerful formats, leaving things up to opponents rarely pans out)
Casual: 3
Limited: 3 (not great, but it’ll still find you a creature)
Multiplayer: 2
Commander [EDH]: 2.5 (a fun politicking card, but not a great card)

I wish I could tell you that Guided Passage was part of some rogue combo back in the Invasion block. It might have been in some kind of casual deck article back in the early days of Wizards of the Coast’s columns like Serious Fun, or on the old Magic Deck Vortex website, but there’s not much from those days left on the internet. I was never really sure what Guided Passage was for, and I’m still not now. You usually use cards with wording like this when your opponent doesn’t have much choice, or when all the choices hurt them, but any of the methods you might use during the game to ensure that would probably be better suited to just getting the cards into hand yourself. On the plus side, though, drawing three cards is still drawing three cards, and there’s some political value to letting an opponent have a say in multiplayer settings – and perhaps some psychological value in making them think you broke Guided Passage!

Constructed: 1/5

Multiplayer: 2/5
Commander [EDH]: 3/5
