This kind of design always reminds me of something you saw in Decipher’s old Star Wars trading card game from the 1990s. There would be cards whose effect countered a card with a specific name (often referencing a line from the movies, like “It’s Worse” countering “It Could Be Worse”). In Magic’s case, it’s a little broader and intended to be a safety valve of sorts, in this case targeting Strixhaven‘s magecraft cards. I’m not a huge fan of putting a blatant hoser so close to the mechanic in question, because it’ll turn some people off building decks for it at all, but if you go too far the other way, you get Combo Winter. It’s not always easy, I guess.

But in the case of this particular card, I wouldn’t be surprised if it actually gets even more play in the formats with storm decks. It doesn’t make it impossible for them to win a game, but it will force them to think about what they’re doing and buy you some time. It’s not quite as proactive as, say, targeted discard, but it does advance an aggressive deck’s game plan to an extent.

Curse of Shaken Faith is interesting as a very particular sort of hate card. In addition to taking a player who may want to turn night into day (since it dings them to get there), it also has the benefit of hampering storm-based decks or other decks that like chaining together absurdly long strings of spells. And at two mana, it’s an affordable bit of hate that way. I don’t think it’s perfect, but it presents some interesting angles to put a stick in an opponent’s wheels while leaving you unimpeded, and I feel like this might be a fun sideboard option in several formats.

Casual: 3.25
Limited: 2.75 (a lot easier to play around, and does far less as a result)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander: 3.5
